Ch. 63: Progress?

CHAPTER SIXTY-THREE
Ally~
Nothing. We hadn’t been able to find anything. And I was so tired of hitting dead ends. I had woken up after my connection with my grandma and been so excited to tell my mom all about it. But other than the orange stone on a necklace, we hadn’t found anything of use. And I haven’t been able to channel any help from my grandma. At least not yet. Another thing that would need to wait for my first phase. Which looked like it would be in a few days. But until then, my hands were tied.
Mom and I checked out of our motel and hit the road back home. On the road my mom tried to console me with reassurances that we wouldn’t need to wait long. But I still knew that things felt wrong and I felt confident that I would be able to seriously help in time. I fell asleep somewhere in the desert to my mom singing along to old country songs.
I dreamed about my grandma on the ride home. She was in a forest with her coven, wolves howled in the distance. The smell of the trees and the bonfire smoke filled me with hope. It felt like anything was possible.
Two days. The full moon was in two days and I was going to be ready. For anything and everything. I sent a text back to Rachel. Something told me to wait until tomorrow to talk with her, to talk in person.

Kyle~
More days passed. I hadn’t been able to make any more progress. Until today. My kidnappers seem to have someone new around. There was a female voice next door that was muffled, but seemed irritated.
My main kidnapper, the skipping figure with the tiny feet, came in visibly upset. She tossed my tray down with force, sending the water from the cup flying at the adjacent wall. I sat up from my position and eyed her. Even with the voice modulator I knew she was a she, or was most likely one. And today, with her upset over the new female voice still yelling nextdoor, I could see her hair. Dark brown, pretty long. Lightly curly. With gray. She was an older woman. Again I was struck with the feeling that I have seen her somewhere.
It made sense, they do say that most crimes are commited by people you know. I just couldn’t place her. I kept my face bored and neutral, I couldn’t let on that she had messed up and shown me something new about her.
“Are you ready fae?” she asked abruptly.
I had been waiting for this. I had agreed to this days ago but it looked like even though I was ready, something on their end wasn’t. Or at least it hadn’t been ready. Maybe that was a good sign. Maybe their plans were failing.
“Yeah. Been ready,” I said irritably.
Her head whipped at me. I was going to play a different game today, push her buttons. She was already upset about the new person nextdoor. Maybe this was my chance to take advantage of it and push her further, learn something else new.
She marched at me upset and raged, “I think you’re very confused right now fae garbage! You don’t seem to remember who is in charge here!”
“Big talk. Big talk. I’m pretty sure I agreed days ago and you have messed something up so much that your plans are alllll screwed up,” I chuckled. “But what do I know?”
“You know nothing,” she hissed.
“Hey, don’t take it out on me. I’m not the one who messed up this well calculated plan…” I said, laying back down on my back like I didn’t care.
She came much closer into the light. I saw something shine in the corner of my eye. A phone sticking out of her pocket.
“Shut your pathetic mouth, or you’ll be in the ground like your precious grandmother,” she threatened.
I’m not going to pretend that didn’t kill me. It did. But I stayed still, kept my face still. I needed to push her more.
“Sorry Miss, didn’t realize you jut heard watched Blackfish. You’re behind the times, but it’s still messed up,” I said to the ceiling, not looking at her.
If I could get her closer maybe I could notice something else.
“You’re an idiot,” she cut simply and walked back into the shadows.
Da^n. I was getting closer. But not fast enough.
“When he comes in, keep your mouth shut or you’ll be wishing I had killed you instead,” she said in frustration from the door.
He. Another accomplice. So there were clearly at least three people holding me here or somehow a part of this. My mind started to roll back, thinking of any groups of three I could imagine.
The faintest smell of lavender lingered in the air. The moment I noticed it I sat up. I know this. I know this. Older woman, lavender. Ugh, how come I couldn’t place her?
I heard unintelligible yelling again and this time slid closer to the vent. I couldn’t hear it all but I picked up pieces.
“... get him now… it’s changed! You have your orders!” the female voice from earlier today yelled.
I’m pretty sure whoever that was was young, bratty. But I couldn’t be sure.
“... later. Now… Vance…” the modulated voice said.
Then a door slammed and I was alone in silence.
Vance?

Hours later my dinner was brought in by the older woman. This time I pretended to ignore her. She crept closer and closer. The lavender smell increased. I fluttered my lashes a bit, still being very careful to keep my breathing deep and even. Get her to come check on me and think I had fallen asleep.
“Now,” a male voice I vaguely recognized said from the doorway.
He must have walked like a ghost. I hadn’t heard any other person.
Then there was a jab in my arm. And I tried to fight it but I instantly saw black.
His steps got closer and I passed out for the first time in probably a month.
