Ch. 62: Discoveries
CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO
Jake~
Something was happening to my mate. She was in a panic. I had run out of my class and was outside in the parking lot. I was just about to ignore the Goddess and run to her school when it changed. She was.. Relieved?
“What’s up?” Nick asked me, he must have seen me leave campus.
My face scrunched. “I’m not sure. Rachel was in trouble. But I think she’s okay now. She’s relieved.”
“Are we supposed to ignore the level you can sense her right now?” Evan said from behind a few cars.
“I’m not even questioning how odd and strong our Alpha is Ev, just accept that they’re different. And I have no clue how things work anymore,” Nick said, running his hand through his hair, clearly exasperated.
The bell rang, the period we had just ran out of was over.
“How are we supposed to focus on math and English when all this stuff is going on that we don’t know anything about?” Nick complained.
I just chuckled and turned to him.
“What’s got you in such a good mood?” Evan asked me.
“I just know it’s going to be okay. We have the Goddess on our side. I have to have faith in that,” I breathed out. I walked back to campus and smacked Evan on the chest, “Don’t let me forget that, okay?”
“I mean, I’ll try…” he mumbled behind me.
But I really knew it would end well. Rachel was my mate. We could be together soon. I would help her overcome whatever memory thing had been done to her and we would protect her as she ‘could handle herself’ whatever that meant. I had some ideas. But I couldn’t be sure. For now.
Ally~
“Ugh, there’s nothing here!” I cried and fell to my knees behind the crate.
Mom and I had brought it to a nearby motel. No need for my great aunt to know what we were doing. She didn’t have magic in her veins and all of this was way more on a need-to-know basis.
“Breathe, Ally. We’ll keep looking. I’ll go through this one more time. Mom must have put it somewhere…” she said mostly to herself.
Joey was calling me and I sent him straight to voicemail.
I lay on the floor and looked up at the ceiling of this rundown motel. I fluttered my eyes and gave into the darkness. I was exhausted and had been up for at least a day and a half.
I was among trees. It was night. There was a full moon out. I heard the crackling of fire and some low voices. I found my feet moving towards the voices and sounds. Soon I came to a small clearing.
“There you are my angel,” my grandma said from beside me. “You’re ready now.”
I wanted to ask her ‘ready for what?’ but nothing came out.
“In my trunk - you must have come across a little orange jewel that looks like this?” She showed me the pendant on her necklace.
I nodded. Yes I had seen that.
“This is a memory stone. I embedded it with memories of moments like this,” she waved her hand around at the other practicing witches around the bonfire. “So part of me could live on until you were old enough.”
I looked around and then back at her eyes.
“Angel, something is coming, and we need to push you ahead. We aren’t waiting for your birth moon. It’s going to happen this coming full moon. Do you understand?” She asked me.
I nodded again, even though I really didn’t. I understood her words but I had so many questions.
“Good. Now when you phase for your first time, it’s going to hurt dear. I’m sorry,” she touched my cheek, “But things are happening quickly and you are meant to help. You have to be ready. My grimoire will find you once you’ve phased. Your mom will help you. It’s you who will have our family gift, but don’t forget your mother is a pretty competent witch when she wants to be. She just never wanted all this as much as you do.”
The world around us flickered.
“I have to go soon,” I reached out to stop her. “Don’t worry my Ally angel. Once you phase we can talk almost all you want with this stone. I will guide you as much as I can. I still have our Goddess to oblige… I’m sorry I didn’t see this earlier. I would have trained you more.”
The world flickered twice.
“Tell your mom I love her, and make sure to wear this stone when you phase. Next full moon. Do you understand?” she asked.
I nodded vigorously as the world dissipated away and I slept in darkness.
Sean~
I ran to her side the moment I heard about what had happened. Rachel was cleared by the EMTs after they gave her some fluids and she told the school staff she wanted to finish out the day. The school had informed her mother, but Rachel assured her she was okay. It was the middle of our last period but the school staff looked the other way as I sat with Rachel on the office couch.
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” I finally breathed out.
She squeezed my hand, “I’m fine. I’m feeling much better really.”
“Rachel, I just want to let you know that we are working on what you told me about,” Ms. Arnhem said from the doorway. She glanced at me, “I promise something will be done.”
She nodded in response.
“What was that about?” I asked her, imploring her to tell me.
“It’s what’s been going on. Remember that guy I told you about when I first started here?” she explained.
I could feel my magic burn. I should have known! But when I asked her about it she would deny it was him.
I nodded as she continued to explain what had been going on.
She was mine and I would be daed if any greasy punk or pathetic mutt would try to take her away.
This weasel. Putting his hands on my light, my Sunshine. I would kill him. I had killed for less.
“What is his name?” I asked her, reining in the red circles I knew she would be seeing in my eyes. She had been spelled to ignore them but it didn’t mean I wanted to push my luck.
“Vance,” she said easily.
Vance. Weasel. Dead as a doornail when I was done with him. How she was never able to talk about it - he must be something dark. Did he sense her power too? How she amplified abilities.
“I’ll take care of this, Sunshine,” I told her. She nodded happily.
Keeping eye contact I spoke enchantments again, keeping her only with me. I nearly died getting her to forget those mutts. But it was worth it. Oh so sweet, when she looked right at them and didn’t even recognize them. Mutts, dumb dogs, trying to amplify their own abilities. I would need to keep these spells up daily if I could, to keep the memory of them away, long enough for them to give up on her. I couldn’t have her looking at anyone else.
No. She was mine. Had been mine the moment I saw her. The day I had followed her home. The night I had first shifted into a crow to watch over her, due in part to her amplification making stronger than I should be at my age. She would make me strong and in exchange I would give her anything her heart desired.
