Ch. 58: Don’t Give Up on Her

CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT:
Jake~
She hadn’t responded to my most recent text. I know I probably came off a little too flirty in that earlier message, I knew that Sean guy was still in the picture, but I knew it couldn’t last with him. I know we are supposed to be together. So what was going on?
It was already 1pm, and I felt something was going wrong. Not quite the deep panic from those other times something had happened to her, but I felt a dark, cold, squirm. Something was off.
“We need to go check on her,” I looked at Nick. He had been finishing some explanation about what he had found earlier in Mitchell’s family’s attic. We were at a bench in the park to get some privacy for this very sensitive conversation.
Nick looked at me, slightly annoyed. I must have cut him off or something.
“Something’s… off,” Evan added, “Let’s go.”
I was up and after Evan with Nick close behind. We ran quickly up the streets, up the hill, and started to make our way down the stairs. Nick put a hand out to stop me and I nearly shoved him for it.
“She’s not there,” Evan also held up a hand. “It’s just her sister and her mom.”
“Where did she go then?” I looked at Nick like he was holding something back from me.
“Your eyes, J,” Nick whispered.
“It’s like last time,” Evan added in awe.
I held back a snap and tried to rein in the building anger. Something in my expression must have tipped Nick off and he pulled out his phone.
“Look, J - I’ll call her,” he started hitting things and we stood there as the phone rang. Evan kept looking at me like I would burst into flames.
The call went to voicemail.
“Jake, take a breath,” Nick tried to console me.
“Your eyes are still dark and shiny dude,” Evan observed.
“Where is she?” A voice said. It was me. But it wasn’t me.
Nick took a step back, and brought his wolf Asher to his eyes.
Who are you? Asher asked me.
“Stop it, Nick,” I seethed. Find her, I added, this time again sounding like someone else.
“Oh fk,” was all Evan said, hand rubbing the back of his head.

Evan~
Jake’s eyes stayed dark and swirled. Where before it stopped after a few seconds, it’s like he couldn’t turn it off. Well, I mean, I don’t even think he noticed what was happening to him. Or cared. When Asher came out to talk to him, I followed that logic. Maybe somehow his wolf was making an early appearance? But what came out was him. It was all him. Well, partly in a different, dark and da*n scary tone, but it wasn’t like talking to someone when their wolf came forward.
Xavier, can we try linking him? Is there a wolf in there? I asked my wolf, Xavier.
I don’t know… Let’s try… he said back clearly unsure.
But Jake didn’t seem to notice me trying to link him as he cursed at Nick for not moving, and at me for not knowing where she was.
“Jake, I’ll go ask her mom, okay? Just wait with Nick for one second,” I told him, putting my hand on his shoulder to console him. He nearly bit my hand off.
I’ll try to reach whatever is in there… Xavier informed me as I felt him slink further and further away.
Well, at least I could tell Nick for sure that he definitely had something in his mind…
I rushed over to the building and up the stairs, hearing Jake cursing at Nick. I knew it wouldn’t be long before Jake shoved his way over here and potentially scared Rachel’s mom. I rung the doorbell and heard soft padding coming to the door.
“Yes? Hello?” Rachel’s mom asked through the screen door.
“Hi Mrs. Hansen,” I started, trying to focus on the human woman in front of me and not the arguing I heard far off.
“Oh Ms. Blancos, if you don’t mind. I changed my name after the divorce. You’re… Eric, right? You went to school with Rachel?” She looked like an older, tanner version of Rachel. A little shorter too.
“Oh, yes, apologies ma’am. Yes I’m Evan. I was just wondering if Rachel was around? We spoke yesterday about meeting up with a group of friends today and we just haven’t heard from her…” I explained.
Ms. Blancos opened the screen door and stepped out on the landing. She looked down near where Jake and Nick were, but couldn’t see or hear them as far as I knew.
“Friends? A group?” she asked me.
“Yes ma’am,” I confirmed.
“I’m sorry, you missed her. She went to the movies with that boyfriend of hers about an hour ago…” she explained.
Sean? Why would she go off with him and not tell us when she knew we made plans today? And why was Jake losing his mind over her on a date with that guy? Maybe he was trying to make a move on her and Jake could sense it? I could think of a million and one possible explanations but the truth is, no one could tell us what was happening with Rachel and Jake. Least of all Rachel and Jake.
Jake. Ugh. I’d have to tell him. Assuming Nick hadn’t heard us up here and told him himself.
“Oh, well, must be a misunderstanding, thank you,” I told Ms. Blancos as I started to turn away. She put a hand up.
“Evan, can I ask you something?” she asked me inquisitive.
“Of course,” I replied.
“Is, is Jake in that group you were talking about? Have he and Rachel been having something going on lately?” I was shocked at her question.
“Um, yes he is. And yes they have been spending more time together…” I said honestly. Where was she going with this?
“Hmm… okay,” she relaxed her arms. “Can you tell him… not to give up on her? Sorry, I think I am… overstepping. But I don’t know about this guy she’s with. I always thought she and Jake were a good match, don’t you?”
I smiled, “Yes, I think so too.”
“Good,” was all she said before heading back inside.
I guess parents weren’t as oblivious as we think.
