Nate Part 5
When I arrive at the university parking lot, Nate is already there, pacing nervously in circles. Harry and Josiah are with him, and even Cristina. I rest my head against the glove compartment and let out a roar of pain. I truly hope this will be the last time something so devastating consumes me. Because I never want to be deceived like this again.
"Love..." Nate calls, opening the car door. "I’m so sorry!"
"It was Hellen," I say weakly, shaking my head as I meet his sad eyes, the beautiful face I love so much. "She destroyed us."
"No. She tried to, but we’re still here. Together," he says, pulling me out and embracing me. His incredible scent fills my senses, bringing me security. "I didn’t expect this. But let’s go home. I’ll do like Sheldon, your favorite character from that show we watch, and give you a warm drink, then hug you tight so you understand you’re not alone. And look at these people..."
Nate points to my friends, standing with sad expressions around me.
"We’re your family!" Cristina says, biting her lip, trying to hold back tears. "You’re like a sister to me."
"And you’re a sister to me too," I manage to say, seeing the care, pain, and love in their eyes as they look at me.
"I’m sorry, little redhead!" Harry mutters, rolling his eyes as a tear falls. "That old witch."
I let out a small laugh. I’m shattered, and this idiot still manages to pull a smile from me.
"You’re our little assassin doll," Josiah adds, smoking a cigarette, looking anxious.
"And my little brat. I think you can call us family. I just won’t offer a group hug because, you know..." He smiles sadly.
"I want all of you with me tonight, so I don’t forget this." I take a deep breath, wrapping an arm around my boyfriend as we head to the loft. "That you are my new family."
I’ve been broken, and it feels like all I have left is the stem. But I think I can rebuild if I look at the people who love me.
