Chapter 170 Part 2
**James**
I put my hand on her stomach and used our link to speak to her. “Avery, my love, my queen, you must be careful how much of your essence you share. These children will come to need a lot for their development. I don’t want to risk losing a bit of you or them.” She takes my hand that is on her stomach and squeezes it reassuringly. I must trust her, but it is hard.
Cassius steps forward, his hand on the hilt of his sword. “We’re with you, Avery. No matter what.”
Clint nods, his jaw set. “We’ve faced worse. We’ll get through this.”
Conner’s eyes narrow, his expression grim. “Just be careful. We don’t know what this will do to you.”
Avery takes a deep breath, her hand reaching out to the figures. “I’m ready,” she says, her voice steady. “Let’s do this.”
The figures close in, their forms merging into a swirling mass of light and shadow. Avery’s eyes closed, her face contorted in concentration. I can feel the bond between us shift, a ripple of energy that runs through all of us.
And then, it happens.
A burst of light erupts from Avery, a brilliant flash that illuminates the forest. The figures scream, their voices a chorus of agony and release. The air crackles with energy, the trees shaking as if caught in a storm.
Avery staggers, her hand reaching out for support. I catch her, my arms wrapping around her as she gasps for breath. Her eyes flutter open, her gaze unfocused. “It’s done,” she whispers, her voice weak. “They’re free.”
The forest falls silent, the mist clearing as if blown away by a sudden wind. The figures are gone, their forms dissipated into the air. But something else has changed.
Avery’s eyes meet mine, her expression unreadable. “I… I feel different,” she says, her voice trembling. “Something’s… shifted.”
I can feel it too, a change in the bond that connects us. It’s subtle, but undeniable. Something has been taken, a piece of her essence, a fragment of her soul. And as we stand there, surrounded by the ancient trees, I can’t shake the feeling that this is only the beginning. The darkness is still out there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for its chance to strike. Only a bit of her life force was to be taken, but this shift signifies that something else was too, but what? Oh, Avery, what have you done?
