Chapter 61: Adapting

**Avery**

As we were driving back, I looked over at my mates. “We are going to need a suitable story for how we met Draven. No one can know that he's a magic user and could enchant anything including a dragon enough to steal it. You told me that the blade Lenore had was a dragon blade. We still need to know how she got it because The Hags are too dumb to have obtained it without help.”

Cassius chuckles, “We never told you all about that blade.” I gasped. He smiled before he stole a quick kiss, “Avery, you must have heard some of our thoughts even before Regina emerged. It is alright if you do. We won't hide anything from you ever again.”

I bite my lip. Clint leans up from the backseat to run his finger over my lip. “Avery, there is not anything to be embarrassed about. We are dragons. Even if you weren't The Mother but only our mate, you would still be able to hear our thoughts if the link were open and vice versa. Everything will come to you in time just as how you learned to fly so easily and knew how to free Blackbriar. You are amazing and it is time for you to believe in yourself as we do. I love you,” he looks at his brothers, “We love you.”

Draven observed our exchange. “All of my life, I was led to believe that The Dracos were the reason for the curse on Blackbriar and that they needed to be eradicated. You aren't vengeful and merciless, are you?”

Conner looked around those of us in the car before he spoke, “Our parents raised us to be better men than how we have been. It is all because of Avery. She makes us want to be worthy of her.”

Draven looks at me for an explanation. “I didn't always used to look like this. My dragon was rendered dormant when I was a toddler. I looked like a living corpse, with pale skin, ratted mousey hair and all. Three bitches, who I call The Hoity Hags, tried to kill me with a Dragon’s Blade. I didn't die and I remembered everything too.” His eyes widen but he lets me continue, “Then when The Trio had their Grand Ceremony, my dragon awakened. We learned that I am The Mother shortly afterward. I still don't know all I am capable of, but I don't think The Hags are working alone and I don't think that they are done trying to kill me yet either.”

Draven looks away briefly. “When you touched me, I saw and felt some of your torment. I couldn't understand why your dragon would allow you to suffer, but if she were dormant then that makes sense. That blade can't kill The Mother because it was made from one of Tiamat’s scales. I can show you a few spells to help illuminate your traitors, especially since your Hags must be those girls whom I aided. They wore a glamour, but if I can see their eyes I can identify them because the eyes are the window to the soul which you and your dragon share.”

That gave me an idea. “When is prom?”

“You know it is always in the spring, why?” Cassius asks.

“I wasn't going to go, but I will this year. Let's make it soon too before Christmas break,” I suggest.

“What are you planning?” he asks.

“I want to force The Hags to act. I want them to come for me without time to plot. I want them to use that blade again. Then I will kill them and Draven can trace who has touched it. Right, Draven?”

He nods. “Yes, and you might be able to get a vision from it too. Avery, you are magic too. But we will trap them. I just don't want you to get hurt.”

Regina pushes forward. I can feel her flame before I hear her voice leave my lips, “Draven, a tiny bit of pain is nothing compared to a lifetime full of it. Avery and I can not be killed and now our mates can't be either. It may take time to recover, but we will recover. We are that phoenix who always rises. Let them try what they will ultimately fail at. Don't ask me how I know that this is true, but trust in me instead. Draven, you must play the spy. Let The Hags think that you tricked me and my mates. Can you do that?”

**Draven**

Avery asked if I could act as a spy. I already owe her so much. She's revealed who she is to me and saved my town. She has also given me the ability to find my mate. I just don't know who or what they could be because I have a secret that I should likely share. There's a reason why I could force a dragon to inhabit my body. I look into her eyes, “Yes, I can spy but you should know something.”

“What?” she sweetly asks.

“My mate might not be a human or a magic user. He or she could also be a dragon.”

She looks at her mates. “Yet something else our education has been wrong about,” she giggles, “If my romance books are right again, you boys owe me one hell of a date.”

The Trio laughs before Cassius says, “We will give you one anyway. But Draven, how is that possible? Dragons are to only mate with dragons.”

I slowly let out a breath as I explained how my mother fell in love with my father who was a warlock. They lived in the human world to hide from those seeking to kill them. I was born in a town called Midnight Falls that's somewhere in Louisiana. I spent most of my childhood there. Then they moved to Blackbriar and all of the horrors started happening. I don't remember how my parents were killed or how I survived, but I began my pursuit to flee Blackbriar right after I sent their ashes to the winds.

To my surprise, Avery climbs into the backseat and sits on my lap. She gives me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “We are all orphans. You will find your person just as I found mine. That dragon who you stole wasn't meant for you. He was promised to a soul who hasn't been reborn yet. Yours might be in you just dormant as Regina was. Your hidden dragon might have used too much magic to spare your life like Regina did me too. It will all be okay.”

Clint and Conner gave her a kiss and she giggled. There is so much light inside of Avery it is no wonder so many seek to extinguish it. As she climbed back up to the passenger’s seat, I said, “You have yourself a spy and whatever else you need me to be.”

She grins. “Good because I need a driver and we could use a butler too.”

“Alright, it is a deal.”
