Chapter 174: Paths
**James**
As we stand amidst the aftermath of the battle, the ground scorched and littered with the remnants of our clash with the rival dragon clan. “Avery, look,” I say as I point to a message carved into a scorched tree. It read, ‘I had to fight. Find the hidden lair, and there I can tell you why, my queen. Be warned, it is littered with traps and magic, there was no other way.’
Avery turns to face the rest of us, her eyes scanning our group. "We need to move quickly," she says, her voice steady despite the weight of what we've just discovered. "The message from the rival leader—it's a call to action. We must find this underground lair and uncover the truth about our shared enemy."
Cassius steps forward, his blue eyes narrowing as he processes the information. "This lair won't be easy to find," he says, his voice low and commanding. "The rival leader mentioned ancient magic and treacherous traps. We'll need to be prepared for anything."
Clint, ever the strategist, nods in agreement. "We should split into teams," he suggests, his eyes flicking between us. "Avery, you and I will take point. Cassius, Conner, and James, you'll form the second team. Jace and Rory, you both will be in the middle. Donn, Vincent, and Draven, you'll bring up the rear and watch our backs. We'll need to move fast and stay alert."
As we begin to organize, I can't shake the feeling that this journey will test us in ways we're not yet prepared for. I felt a truth emitting from the words. I believe that the rival leader's message has revealed a connection between Avery, Jace, and himself—a link to finding Altima and Avery's long-lost brother, Sam. But the path ahead is shrouded in mystery, and I can't help but wonder what other secrets await us.
We set off at a brisk pace, the forest around us growing denser as we ventured deeper into uncharted territory. Avery walks slightly ahead of me, her hand brushing back against mine as we navigate the underbrush. I can feel the electricity between us, a reminder of the bond we share. "Are you ready for this?" I ask, my voice low.
She smiles, her eyes sparkling with determination. "I was born ready, James. But I'm glad I have you by my side."
Her words send a thrill through me, and I squeeze her hand gently. "Always," I reply, my voice firm.
As we walk, the tension between us builds, the unspoken desire hanging heavy in the air. I can feel her eyes on me, and I know she's thinking the same thing I am. We need a release, a moment to let go of the weight of our mission and simply be together.
Without a word, I pull her into a secluded clearing, my hands moving to her waist as I press her against a tree. Her eyes widen in surprise, but she doesn't resist as I capture her lips in a fierce kiss. Our tongues tangle, our breaths mingling as we surrender to the passion between us.
I can feel her hands moving over my body, her touch sending shivers down my spine. She's wearing a form-fitting gown, but I don't let that stop me. My hands move to the laces, slowly unraveling them as I explore the curves of her body. The fabric falls away. Avery moans into my mouth, her hands gripping my shoulders as I press her against the tree. "James," she whispers, her voice thick with desire. "I need you."
