50-That’s My Baby
**Zuri's POV**
Today is the day we tell my parents about our relationship and break the news about the baby. Daveed and Sav have kept me sane as the time gets closer and closer. We pull up to their house and I take a few deep breaths before we exit the car. My mom opens the front door and waves at us as we approach her and then gives us all a hug.
"I'm so glad you all stopped by for a visit! I feel like I never see my daughter anymore." She's being dramatic because Sav and I stop by her restaurant from time to time to say hello.
"I'll make sure to visit more often." I give her a quick hug and we go inside.
We sit at the kitchen table and she pours us some cold filtered water from the refrigerator. "I'm surprised to see you here, Daveed. How have you been?"
"I've been great. How are you and Luca?" He responds.
"We're wonderful. He's in his office." She calls out for my dad and he comes into the kitchen. He smiles at Sav and me but just says a simple hello to Daveed.
"So, what made you three come by?" Dad asks.
"What? Your daughter can't just come by to visit her two loving parents?" I act fake offended.
"You can, but I feel like there's something you want to say. You look nervous." He observed. I could never hide my emotions from my dad. He has this crazy ability to see right through my bull shit. I figured it would be best to come out and say it.
"I'm pregnant." I meant for it to be smooth, but it came out kind of in a panic. I'm so scared to disappoint them.
"Pregnant? By that red-headed boy?" My dad makes it sound like it would be the worst thing ever and my mom looks slightly excited.
"No, not by Rory." I join hands with Sav and Daveed. It gives me a sense of security. "Daveed, Sav, and I are together. Daveed is the father."
It surprises me when I see my dad look relieved. "Oh, thank goodness."
"You're not mad?" I could cry. I think I might.
"I think it's too soon to have a baby together, but I know Daveed enough to see that you're in good hands. Especially if it means not losing Saviera. You weren't yourself when you and the other boy dated. I know he's a nice guy, but you weren't as happy as you tried to convince yourself. There's nothing wrong with polygamous relationships. Well, in your case, polyamorous. As long as you're genuinely happy, sweetie." I stand up and rush into my dad's arms. He's the last person that I thought would be accepting. My mom wraps her arms around us too and kisses my cheek.
"I'm going to have two grandbabies at the same time. This is such a blessing." The fact that she claims Sav's baby as her grandchild doesn't surprise me, but it still warms my heart. I needed this support more than anyone will know. We break up the hug and my parents start asking questions to all three of us.
"Do you plan on marrying them?" My dad asked Daveed.
"I would love to, but it's illegal to marry more than one person." Daveed talked to us about this before and it upsets him that the government has so much power over peoples' relationships.
"Have you considered a spiritual union instead? Sav and Zuri can still change their last names, but there's a chance the state will want to fight against the name change if it's made known that you three are together. You can either lay low and try to stay under the radar, or the three of you can be loud about it. Be proud of your relationship and the family the three of you have created. Fight against the unfair law that is against your right to love one another. If it were me? I would fight." My dad has always been a fighter. The quiet ones can be the most fierce because it's not expected.
Daveed takes a few seconds to think it over, "I would love that. Not being able to marry them has seriously bothered me because I want them to have everything they deserve. A big wedding, beautiful dresses, surrounded by all of our loved ones. The whole nine yards. And I won't lay low either."
My dad cracked a rare smile, "Welcome to the family, son."
**Saviera's POV**
We're on our way home when Daveed's phone bings.
"Could one of you check that for me?" Since he's driving, Zuri takes his phone from his lap and reads it aloud.
"*Mind if I stop by? We need to talk.* It's from Rory." She looks a little uncomfortable when she mentions his name.
"This was bound to happen sooner or later. Text him back and tell him to come by." Daveed has been giving Rory space because there wasn't much he could have said to him to make things easier.
We arrive at the same time and Daveed welcomes him in. "What's up, man."
"I heard Zuri's pregnant. How far along is she?" He asks without hesitation.
"About two months. Why?" Daveed kind of looks annoyed.
Rory looks like he's figuring something in his head, "The baby might be mine."
"No, the baby is Daveed's. We used protection, Rory." Zuri argues.
"I think the condom broke. It was dark in the room and we went to sleep right after we had sex. By the time I took the trash out of my room and noticed the rip, you already got back with Sav and Daveed. I don't know if the condom ripped from the glass that I threw away or if it happened during sex. I also figured you would call me if you found out you were pregnant. Weren't you using protection with Daveed?" He paces the room during his rant.
"Why are you just now telling me this!?" Zuri is nearly yelling.
"I didn't feel the condom rip at all while we were using it, so I assumed it ripped when I threw a glass beer bottle away and it shattered. At the time, I didn't think anything of it, but when I found out you were pregnant today I had to see how far along you were. Now I'm thinking it could be possible that I just didn't feel it rip." He explains.
Daveed looks like he's going to kill his best friend and Zuri is speechless. "To answer your question, no. We have not used protection since the day she got back with us."
"You had unprotected sex with them the same day we split up?" He rakes a hand through his hair.
"Yeah, I made raw love to her for quite a while that night and nearly every night since she came back. But that's not your business, Rory." Daveed and Rory stand toe-to-toe. No one moved or said anything else.
"We'll get a paternity test done as soon as possible." I broke the painful silence. "It can be done while she's in her first trimester."
Rory nods his head and Daveed stays still. "That's my baby, no matter what the results show. Anything else?"
"No, that's all." Rory answers and leaves without another word.
"Can life ever give us a fucking break?" Zuri sits on the couch and puts her face in her hands, "Why wouldn't he check the condom when he took it off? I shouldn't have done anything with him."
Daveed picks her up and places her in his lap. "Everything's going to be fine. This baby is ours, okay?"
He kisses Zuri's temple and I gently rub her back for reassurance.
