The Real Reason
*Chapter 23*
I sat while watching a few of my watchers carefully rummaging around Reginald's study room. One of my servants was fanning me gently while I was crossing my arms over my chest.
"Bring what you think is suspicious," I ordered unemotionally.
"Yes, my siren," they all said in unison.
"Luna."
I glanced coldly at Philea who had a perturbed expression. "What?"
She bit her lower lip. "W-What if Alpha finds out that you barged in his study room without his permission? I am afraid—"
"I am just doing him a favor, Philea. If Reginald is communicating with a woman who happened to be his mate, then I must know it immediately." I crossed my legs. "After all, this is my benefit, too. I have been wanting to divorce this marriage for a very long time." I tucked a few strands of my hair behind my ear. "Of course, you wouldn't understand my point of view because you are married to your fated mate." I rolled my eyes, feeling bitter about this matter. "If you are not in my shoes, do not utter such nonsense statements. Do you understand, Philea?" I asked in a warning tone.
Philea clasped her hands after a moment of silence before she curtsied before me. "I understand, Luna. It is so sensitive of me to not understand our Luna's situation," she said politely.
I averted my gaze from her. "This is also for my pack members' benefit. I do not belong to this pack and am not fit to handle the Luna duties." I glanced to my side when one of my watchers approached while kneeling before me. I took it. "Once Reginald finds his mate and divorces our marriage, his mate will become the Luna that is fitted to be one, unlike me." I reclined to my seat and looked up when the people around me halted at their work. I furrowed my eyebrows seeing their reaction. "What?"
What was their reaction? Why did they look at me like they didn't want me to leave?
Heimon and Philea exchanged glances before they shook their heads. "Nothing, Luna," they said in unison.
I scoffed and ignored them before I returned my attention to the documents my watcher handed to me. I reread the document I read earlier that made my eyebrows attached. "Oteiza Law LLC..." I arched my eyebrow. "Law firm?" I looked up. "This law firm right here... Is this located in Folkstone City?"
"Yes, my goddess."
I stiffened when I felt a hot breath fanning against my nape that sent shivers down my spine. My wolf even jumped in joy when she found out who that person that just whispered behind us because of his alluring musky scent.
I straightened my back and cocked my head from side to side with a stony expression expressed on my face. "I thought you already left," I stated while my eyes were sauntering to the documents to check the transactions Reginald had done to Oteiza Law LLC.
Frederick knelt before me and took my hand so he could place sensual jitters on my skin. On that movement, I already felt my body was on fire again just by having this slave around me.
"I came to say my farewell before I will go back to the cabin, my goddess," he replied huskily, staring at my eyes feeling like he was trying to seduce me with that gaze.
I didn't show any ounce of emotion at that action. But I could have sworn that I was squirming looking at Frederick with that hot gaze coming from him. It was like he was challenging me that I must do something with him because I was the dominant one.
This brat...
I roughly grabbed him to his slave collar so our faces could meet before I slammed my lips to his.
But I questioned my action as to why I suddenly kissed him. It was like an instinct and something urged me—probably my wolf—to do this.
It didn't take long for Frederick to kiss me back while I was closing my eyes. It was like he was just waiting for me to have this action as an excuse to kiss me torridly by entering his tongue to explore the inside of my mouth. I suddenly tasted the salty flavor with herbs and spices of the beef stew we ate a while ago.
"Dar—" I was about to tell him to halt now when I tried to distance myself but Frederick deepened the kiss, inviting me to respond again to him.
I gladly accepted his invitation as I clutched his hair and sided my head so we could give some full access to each other. I moaned inside his mouth when he pressed my nape to dive inside my mouth.
"I want you, my goddess..." Frederick whispered in my ear when he left my lips.
I slowly peeled my eyes open and met the crook of his neck. Suddenly, my mouth watered, wanting to mark Frederick right now. But I bit my inner cheeks to cease that thought I had in my mind before I leaned backward so I could see him.
I stroked his head, smirking when I saw his glistening plump lips that had a lip rouge smudged on the corner of his lips. I used my thumb to carefully remove it and saw Frederick stretch the corner of his lips into a smirk.
I lowered my head and planted a kiss at the corner of his lips before I commanded him to stand. "Do not forget your task. You may now be dismissed." I gestured my hand, indicating that he could leave now.
In my peripheral vision, Frederick smiled and bowed his head deeply. "Yes, my goddess. I shall wait for you to visit the cabin."
His voice sounded arrogant like he was already expecting that I would pay him a visit, not the other male slaves I had back in the cabin. But there was hope written in his eyes.
I handed my hand to him again. Frederick didn't hesitate as he took it and kissed the back of my hand again while he was bestowing a meaningful smile before he stepped back and bowed before me again. Then he left along with Dorian but Frederick growled at him.
He must have known that Dorian and Holland fucked me back in the bathroom which was why his wolf and he was acting possessively.
"Luna."
I snapped back and saw Heimon who was holding a map to show it to me. "Sir Frederick is correct. Otieza Law LLC is located at Folkstone City."
I was creasing my forehead and looking for the city named Folkstone City, the City of Bargain. Then my servant bestowed me with a book of that city that contained the business names. I saw Otieza Law LLC on it as well.
"Established this year..." I stroked my chin, looking at it suspiciously. "Is Reginald sponsoring it?" I looked to the other watchers who remained on standby, waiting for my orders. "Gather information about this law firm and the owner of it," I ordered. "I am certain you can gather some information with the reasonable price there," I added. "I need them this week."
They bowed their heads and nodded. "Yes, my siren." Then they left.
"Heimon, grab me the ledger these past few months of Reginald and bring it to my study room."
"Yes, Luna. As you command."
"Boys, is there anything you find there? Any other letters?"
"We are still looking, my siren."
I squinted my eyes. "Fine." I started approaching the paintings he had here in the walls that cost a fortune. There must be something like a secret compartment here like the ones I had in my study room. "Check behind the paintings," I ordered as I stepped back.
They did as they commanded. There, we found one that had a safety vault and I didn't know the password. I started messing up with the knob to see if I could decipher it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the password.
"Do you know the password?" I glanced at Philea with an arching eyebrow.
She shook her head. "I'm afraid not, Luna. I had never seen Alpha have a safety vault before."
"Tsk." I gently bit my thumb.
I felt anxious all of a sudden because of this safety vault. I just needed to know why he was exchanging letters with Otieza Law LLC.
A law firm that he needed to contact from a faraway state...
I caressed my chin, looking outside the window while I was having lots of questions in my mind. Come to think of it.
He was exchanging some letters with that law firm. Was the purpose for divorcing our marriage? If so, Mooneve had law firms here as he had connections with them. What does he need for it?
What could have been the real purpose?
I went to his desk and sat on it. My eyes carefully rummaged through the piles of paperwork before I used my hands to skim through the pages to check them.
Then my hands halted in the middle when I came to see something that piqued my interest. I skimmed through the pages to see what they were all about.
"Huh..." I murmured and took those papers. Then my heart stopped when I came to see my name below and Father's signature came along with it. Even the emblem of the House of Argerich was engraved on this piece of parchment. There was a sly smile on my lips. "So, that's why you do not want to divorce our marriage, huh?" I murmured, smirking.
That made me silent before I decided to return where it was hidden.
"Luna!"
"My siren!"
I summoned my hand to halt them when I was about to collapse from leaning on the desk. "I'm alright..." I crossed my arms, calming myself. What I learned was making my blood boil so I needed to calm myself before I exploded all of a sudden.
If I explode, I wouldn't be able to make rational decisions. I need to settle my emotions.
"Philea, tell Heimon that I need some tea on the veranda," I ordered before I decided to leave right now. "Continue the work. Tell me anything that you think is suspicious."
I sauntered my way to the hallway, not wanting to stay there. I felt like if I stayed there, I would be suffocated and get killed there. I sat there while I was contemplating.
Heimon arrived with a brewed fresh tea. He had a few male servants with him to serve me some snacks.
"Today's snacks are caramel tarts and apple mouse, Luna," Heimon stated as soon as he filled my cup with green tea.
"I wish to go to the warehouse after this. Inform the others that those included in the deliberation must be there before I arrived," I commanded as I started munching on my snack.
"Yes, Luna. I will mind link them immediately."
I enjoyed the peace here on the veranda as well as I got the chance to smell the peony flowers that mixed in the ambiance. It was so refreshing and calming that I have this kind of peace I wanted to have especially since Reginald was here and I was the one managing the household and some of the pack affairs.
"It would be nice that I am not here anymore." I heaved out a sigh and glanced at Heimon and the other male servants. "Tell me with honesty. I do not mind if it sounds offensive. I need to know if you want me to leave this pack immediately."
From earlier, I noticed that they had hesitations that I had been expressing that if I leave this pack and as long as Reginald finds his mate, it would be their benefit that I would be gone.
"Heimon, let be the spokesperson of the male servants that are working for me," I asked, looking at him frigidly.
He looked surprised but he bowed his head, placing his hand on top of his chest. "As a head butler that hears all the protests from my fellow butlers and servants, if I would compare the reign of Alpha Reginald before and after your arrival, I would rather choose where you are already here, Luna Novalie."
"Oh? Why?" I sounded in disbelief while I was placing my elbow on the table and placed my chin on my hand. "Why do I find it hard to believe? I believe all of you detest me." I smirked.
One of the servants stepped up. "That is not true, my muse. It is because of you we receive an occupation that paid a reasonable price which Alpha Reginald had never done to his pack members."
The other nodded. "I agree, my muse. Even though I am not a pack member from Lordship Reginald and I was once your slave, you give me a chance to work with you. You even give us some shelter and food to eat which we never experienced when I was a peasant before and do not belong to any pack and noble house."
Heimon spoke, "I believe you have checked the account records of Alpha Reginald, Luna. If you will check it again, you will see the improvement of the Lone Crow pack after you arrive here and marry our Alpha."
I scoffed. "I married your Alpha out of my will. He is not my fated mate. Father took my freedom to even marry my mate!" I raised my voice causing them to bow their heads.
"M-My apologies for being insensitive, Luna..." he said politely. "I-If you will survey if my fellow pack members want you not to be our Luna anymore, you will see that they will disagree. With your role as Luna, you have done so much for us and you have been so considerate with the situation we faced before. When Alpha Reginald didn't provide funds to train more pack warriors, you stepped up and conducted a new proposal to allow both men and women to train which he had never done. You even volunteered to train them even if your schedule as the Luna of our pack is already full. Women of this pack had been wanting to be trained and learned how to protect themselves, not always relying on their mates. But because of you, Luna, you have given them hope and a chance to prove to themselves that women can do what men can do."
"It is because I am also a woman who came from the pack that experienced extensive training on becoming a pack warrior for the Wall Burgundy pack. Or even a soldier and a knight if ever we want to serve our service to the royal lycan family and to the military," I reasoned and shrugged my shoulders, finding his statement laughable and foolish.
"When Luna Novalie arrived here, she donated some funds to build more pack houses for us, Omega, that do not have their own home. Even from the Waveless Brook which Alpha never allowed us to go because Alpha said that is his private property, you even threatened him that the Waveless Brook must become the pack's property because that is where we fetch some water to drink and to use it for a bath. Alpha charged us if ever we decide to take some water there but when Luna is here, you didn't leave us behind and make some way to allow us to drink there again," one of the servants spoke.
I clasped my hands together, tilting my head a little. "It is because it is the right thing to do, you silly man." I rolled my eyes. "I only do what I think is right. But I still don't believe that I am a capable Luna for this pack because of what I did in the past." I chuckled. "Maltreating my personnel is my hobby."
"We set that aside, Luna. Because we know that there is a part of you that you are still kind and considerate," Heimon replied.
"Am I?" I felt like I wanted to laugh so loud right now. "You think so highly of me then," I said when Heimon nodded from my question.
"Luna..." Heimon bowed a little. "If you really think that you are not really happy here, we will help you to divorce your marriage. But if that happens and you find your mate... and if it happens to be an Alpha of a pack..." he paused.
I arched my eyebrow. "What?" I urged him. I wondered what he was going to say.
Hesitant, Heimon opened his mouth to utter some words. "I-I want to go with you. I will bring Philea along with me, Luna. Please... If you will leave, take us with you. We do not want to stay here if Alpha Reginald will be the one who will handle the pack alone... Please!"
With the words he uttered, my eyes widened in surprise. "What?" My jaw dropped from that.
