Chapter 42
Howard is having a press conference regarding his new album and Tiffany watches from her home. He answers questions about the new album and his fangirls from the café notice his haggard appearance but figure he might be exhausted from promoting his new album. As expected, his partnership with Tiffany gets brought up and Howard explains the handshake voucher that is in every album that she designed.
He then gets asked about what it was like collaborating with Tiffany and he falls silent, attempting to gather his thoughts. He thinks back to the fun moments but they get overshadowed by what Bernice done recently and Howard looks like he's experiencing the worst headache. He manages to tell everyone that he had a great time working with her through a pained smile.
Bernice is looking at wedding dresses with susanne, but it's like an engagement party not like a wedding, but anyway Bernice asks about postponing the whole affair so she can design her own wedding gown. Susanne advises her that since Tiffany will be back once Howard is finished his work and there's an even greater possibility of her stealing him. She continues by telling her to pick out her wedding gown and that the earlier the better because once she and Howard are actually engaged he won't be able to back out.
Andrew stumbles upon them in the store, he's there to ask brands for some sponsorships and notices her good mood and the fact she's looking at wedding gowns. She's about to spill the beans when susanne discretely places her hand over Bernice to stop her from revealing too much. She just tells him that she can shop for whatever she wants and when susanne leaves, Andrew applauds her for getting back onto her feet and not throwing everything away just for one guy.
He asks her to go shopping but she claims she's busy. Andrew wants to know why but he finds out when the employee cames back and asks if Andrew is her fiancé. He wants to know what's going on and Bernice explains how they're going to get engaged in a few days and gives him an invitation to the ceremony.
Andrew tells her that Howard still likes Tiffany and Bernice angrily says that she was just a fling because he's already agreed to marry her therefore it proves he's been in love with her the entire time. Andrew just calls her crazy. Unable to bear it, she and susanne leaves. with susanne asking Andrew not to provoke her, as if she's doing anything better than he is.
Back at home Tiffany decides to call Jeff. He thinks about it but picks up the phone. She is worried about Howard who won't answer her calls and Jeff, unable to actually tell her what's going on, just brushes it off as him not bringing his phone and assures her not to worry about him since he'll try to find him.
Howard is trying on tuxedos and Bernice is trying on wedding gowns together. She compliments their appearances together and leaves to try on the other dress. Alone Howard, who is clearly not happy, heads outside. And of course ‘Breathe' has to play at this time.
But he's clearly upset and down and just totally not into this wedding thing as he sits and calls Tiffany. As soon as she answers, he apologizes. Tiffany admits to overreacting and says she should be the one apologizing but that's not why. He reveals he already made up his mind and that his decision will hurt her, so that's why he apologized. Tiffany doesn't fully understand and Howard says he can't put Bernice in danger again and that they're going to get engaged, therefore it's over between them. Through his tears the only thing Howard can do is apologize to her.
Tiffany tells him to stop because if he keeps doing that then that means that she's not mature enough. Since he's already made his decision, she feels that he should be responsible for the one he loves. Howard tells her he doesn't know what to say and Tiffany, holding back her own tears, tells him to say goodbye because that's typically how two people end a phone call. Howard does what he's told and they both say goodbye.
Jeff arrives at the bridal shop, having been called by Bernice, and sees Howard crying outside.
Bernice notices his expression once he comes back into the shop and suggests he rest. Howard needs to go get something back at the school so he excuses himself. Bernice tries to get Jeff to go along with him but Howard insists he can go alone and heads out with the tuxedo and all.
He begins going down his trip on memory lane, stopping by the places that are importance to him and Tiffany. He goes to the wall where they first met and technically first kissed and the basketball court where he fully realized that he actually liked Tiffany for the first time. He can barely keep it together but still manages to smile at the memories. He even heads to the old greenhouse, the place where he gave his first present to Tiffany and named the plant after her. Tiffany is looking at that plant in her room as rain falls outside her window.
It's a new day and her Grandpa is moving and out of the bed. He finds Tiffany staring out of a window and he's come to find her because he reveals that he's afraid for the first time. She tells him not to worry since she already decided to stay and run the family business but that's not what he means. What he does mean is that he's finally realized that he was wrong and shouldn't have imposed his dreams on her.
Tiffany reveals that she doesn't have a good excuse to run away anymore. Grandpa then reveals that if he could go back in time he'd encourage her mother, trust her, and be proud of her for being courageous.
