Chapter 34
KIRA:
Having no idea where he came through from, I decide to just play on instincts and follow whatever path my mind goes with. I can only hope that I am not leading us into a trap because even though I am familiar with this environment, I have no idea if changes have been effected here in the past few days or weeks due to the recent issue.
I can hear him following closely behind me which is a way of knowing he is rightly keeping up with me. Although I am a bit surprised that I could hear him almost too well.
Since we left where I was with Kelvin initially, it has been a direct straight pathway we have been going through all along. Fortunately, I could not hear any sound from behind which would mostly state that we are being chased down, making me feel safe for the time being.
The only time I decided to change direction is when the woods come into sight. No way I was going to go in there. I don’t care if this was an urgent issue, the fact remains it is nothing close to safe for me to follow. I wouldn’t even dare, knowing my last experience.
I’m pretty sure that where I am headed now with the alpha is where a few packs are located. Would it or would it not be dangerous to let him be seen there? Who knows. I do know one thing. And that is the fact that the warriors would not be deployed to those areas.
Those areas were deserted as expected. The shutdown was a major factor in it. And so we were able to go through there without anyone stopping us or questioning our questionable behavior.
After about thirty long minutes of running, I stop on the road close to the borderline to catch my breath.
When I look at the alpha, I realized he didn’t even break a sweat. And despite that I had to bend just to get my act together, he was standing tall while looking about. Goodness, what kind of stamina does he possess?
“Are we safe here?” I hear him ask so I quickly take my eyes off him to pretend like I was still trying to gasp for air.
“I guess,” I say, my tone making it know that I was unsure.
“What would happen if the guards suddenly appear here?”
I stand up straight, adjusting my hair as I do so by tucking the loose strands behind my ears. I do have it packed in a ponytail which was why it was totally okay for me to run without care.
“Then we’ll make a run for it like we did the first time.” That was my response to his inquiry, exchanging a look with him at the same time.
We both stare at each other for more than a fraction of a minute before I decide to take the first move in looking away. What was that all about?
“Thank you,” his voice reaches my hearing soon after I turn around to look about the area.
“I only did it to reciprocate you letting me free when I unknowingly trespassed as well,” I say, not failing to hide the tone in my voice about the fact that I do not care that he was being grateful.
“Even with that, I still have to thank you.”
With Alexia’s help, my senses are heightened as I try to make a rundown of the area for movements. I can hardly pick anything due to how low my senses can cover but I was able to get that a long duration from here was void of any other being from the two of us.
Once I felt safer about being here, I turn back around to look at the alpha. “Is there a genuine explanation to what made you find yourself on the Green Dales pack?” I ask him.
“As I said before, I was simply chasing after something that I thought had infiltrated my pack. I never knew I was only being deceived because up to now, I have not had the chance to set my eyes on whatever it is. Which means I was just played all along. It’s still more of a surprise to me.”
“So you thought it was me who did it because you found me in your pack once already? Pfft.” I scoff, shaking my head at him. He sure needed to work on his pack’s defenses if not he would find himself chasing the wind like today. That is if he is even telling the truth.
“It was the only justification. I could not point to any other being because it was you and your friend who first came in sight since I began chasing the unknown as I would rightfully call it now.”
Mentioning the unknown brought back memories of when I was in a similar situation. Except that mine was me being chased down instead of being the chaser.
To date, I have no clue what it was. Even Alexia doesn’t as well which is rather strange because she was almost perfect in nailing things out that I have no idea of. We might be sharing the same body which is mine but she tends to function on her own which was a good combination for my inexperience.
“Is there something going on in your pack that made your pack this security conscious?” the alpha asks me.
I first try to see if I should respond to that, knowing that he is a rival alpha. I might have saved him but it doesn’t change the fact that he is still a rival to our pack. A sworn enemy.
“What do you need the information for?” I demand from him after deciding that I was not going to spill to him. “You want to strategize with it so you could make a move on getting through my pack at our lowest point? Is that what you want to do?”
A narrowness of his eyes and then a smile appears on his face. “You know, for a young girl, you act like you’re older than this which I find impressive. But why would I want to strategize on your pack when mine is going through a much bigger crisis at the moment?”
I frown. “What are you talking about?”
“So you know nothing about the issue the Night Blaze has? Nobody in your pack does?”
I shake my head, declining the question. “Perhaps someone discreetly knows about it, but, personally, I don’t. And I do not think it is something that most know because it would have been a rumor if that had been the case.”
“I see,” he says. “Well, if you must know, for a while now, the Night Blaze pack has been experiencing mysterious disappearances among pack members. What is strange is that it is happening household by household which is why it is a current issue at hand. An issue that would not make me focus on anything else other than to see to the safety of my pack members. Is that enough explanation for you?”
Hearing that made a sour feeling in me protrude. Why does it sound similar to the most possible issue going on in the Green Dales? It feels almost similar, I have to admit.
“Recently, two guards were reported missing with their weapons found in the same place without their bodies. There has still been no trace of what happened before something else got the whole pack on a supposed lockdown a few days ago. I have no idea what it truly is but rumor has it that some members have been reported missing as well,” then I look up at him. “Do you think it could mean the same thing for us?”
His deep hazel eyes bore into me. It is as if he is looking directly into my soul. He then says, “I think it is. It sounds like a completely similar situation with your pack. Maybe I need to find a way to meet with Simon, your alpha, so we could discuss a potential way of handling this.”
“Wait, hold on there. What makes you think Alpha Simon would want to sit at the same table to discuss this issue? And whose name would you mention told this to you? Mine? Don’t even think about it.”
“I am going to find a way to convince him that it is the best possible way to curb the situation before it escalates into something beyond both of our reach. Nothing too serious that would not get him to want to see me.”
I smack myself in the face. “Oh geez. I guess I should never have said anything to you. Don’t you see that you might be making the biggest mistake of your life? Meeting with our alpha would not be appropriate right now. It would seem like you are playing on our vulnerability.”
“I know.”
“Then don’t do it!”
Suddenly I hear voices coming through in our direction. First I look around to get the direction of where it was coming from, and when I have an idea, I decide to tell the alpha:
“Through this path, you’ll get to the borderline. But mind you, pack warriors have been stationed there so you will have to find a way to evade them. I’ll try to distract them for you while you make a passage.”
