Chapter 66

REID:

I saw how disappointed she was when she looked book to realize I had walked away without a word. But I hadn’t left. Instead, I was a distance away watching her leave my territory, just the same way I had been watching her from a distance before she almost got attacked by one of my warriors.

I had to keep my distance from her this time around. It was for my own good because staying around her was making me act up in a way that I shouldn’t. It took a lot of willpower to resist myself from taking her by the hand and telling her what she is to me.

I had to put that idea in the back of my head then because it was bad timing. No way it would make any sense for a girl mourning her dead parents. It would have seemed like I was playing on her vulnerability.

However, it has dawned on me that I am taking too long in getting something done about this mess in both packs. I didn’t get to find out from the girl what caused the death of her parents. There was no need to, though, because it was clear that the situation was just the same as my pack.

How many more would die before the whole issue gets curbed? Mostly, before Simon comes to his senses and accepts the collaboration? I have no idea what to do if this keeps going on and on. I am affected as well which is why I have to start figuring out alternatives before it is too late.

I have finally gotten back to the backyard of my quarters which was in the same state that I had left it. Normally I would not be expecting out of the ordinary but the fact that I had met with a bunch of my warriors in the woods means something must have gone wrong.

I quickly storm back into the quarters through the backdoor. And as soon as I arrive at the living area, I am bombarded by Venice who looks to be apprehensive.

“Where have you been?” is the first thing she asks me. “We have been looking all over for you. Do you even know what has been going on?”

“Hey, slow down,” I tell her while trying to understand her present condition. Yes, I understand she was looking distressed, but what could be the fuss all about? “Who are the ‘we’ that have been looking for me?”

“Hunter and I,” she says. “He just left not too long ago, saying he would be back soon to get you.”

“But what for?” I demand, frowning a little.

“It’s something important. And he would be the only one that can explain it to your understanding so you should reach out to him now,”

I am suddenly skeptical. Brings my thought to the fact that the warriors had been all over today. Could it be related to me seeing them? Or perhaps it was a completely different thing that was going on then?

I decide to reach out to Hunter. And just as I am about to do so while turning away from Venice, I watch Hunter walking into the quarters.

“Perfect... I was just about to mind-link you,” I say as I watch him pace up in my direction in haste.

I noticed from his expression that he was exhausted. Perhaps he has been on the run for long now because this does not look like someone who has not been doing anything. At least, compared to me.

“Are you going to explain what is going on? Because Venice here told me that you both have been looking for me,” I say, waiting for him to catch his breath. He sure needed it.

A few seconds later, he was standing up straight, looking much better than he was when he first got in here.

“There’s something you need to know,” he starts with that.

“Get on with it,”

“For a while now, we have been noticing some weird movements around the pack. We have no idea what is going on in particular but the movements seem too strange and hard to track down. It has been all over.”

My mind suddenly shifts to Kira. She was here not too long ago. Could it be that he was referring to her without knowing? I hope not. Because thinking about what he said, it has been happening all over the pack and she was in just one place.

I decide to ask, “So what are the things you have put in place to handle the situation in my absence?”

“I gathered the warriors and told them to patrol around the pack in bunches because I do not want a situation where going single would affect each of them,”

That was a nice approach, I think. At least I had come across two of those bunches that had been patrolling around the pack. But the single one that had tried to attack Kira... wasn’t he supposed to be in a bunch? Strange. I need to find out what made him be alone during that time.

“Leaving the issue of the pack aside, where were you? We searched all over the place for you but couldn’t catch sight of you. I thought you simply went out for a walk?”

I shake my head to show that I was not into the conversation he intended to bring up. “Don’t worry about me,” is all I can say to him

Frankly speaking, the reason I did not want to get into a lengthy conversation, especially one that obviously has to do with me is that I need to make sense of what he told me. And after some time of thinking and still not getting the memo of the little details he gave out, I decided I had to find out more from him.

“Make me understand the situation better,” I say, bringing back his attention toward me.

“What do you want to know?”

“Let us start with what made you first observe the movements around the pack. And how does it seem to be all over? Because I have no clue what is going on now.”

Hunter runs a hand through his hair, obviously trying to figure out how he would explain it better to me, judging from his expression. “I think I would start by saying it is something about shadows. Does that give you a cue?”

“Shadows?” I state, raising my brows questioningly because that gave me nothing to deliberate on. I was about to tell him to expatiate on that when my mind suddenly floods with one particular thought. “The substance? Is that what you mean?”

“Perhaps,” he says.

“What do you mean? Are you not sure about what you saw?”

“I am not, okay? I just know that it is something moving within the shadows. Fast enough for anyone of us to comprehend. I have even tried to figure out what it could be with Ryu but even he has no idea what it could be,”

I am about to say something in response to that when I hear a weird movement. It was strange but quick-paced, that, I could tell. But it was not coming from here.

My senses were picking up the strange movement from outside the quarters, so without saying anything about what I was feeling to Venice and Hunter, I start to walk in the direction of the main entrance.

I make sure that I am quick with my motion because I sure needed to get there in time. In less than five seconds, I was right in front of the door leading outside which I carefully stand in front of to observe.

“What is it?” I hear Venice’s voice from behind me. I was not surprised that she followed me here. And with the other familiar scent, I could tell that Hunter was here too.

“Shhh.” I hush her while still trying to observe. It was rather strange what I was doing but I have my senses keen on something at the moment.

As soon as I was able to tell that something was indeed wrong, I push the door open with quite an amount of force, coming into sight with the outside view of the quarters.

But the first things I notice are the unmoving bodies lying right across the pathway of the entrance. It got me a bit shocked at first and I was about to question Hunter about what is going on because he had been the last person to come in. That is when I notice a figure standing just down from the balcony.

The figure was a being in red overall with only the face uncovered which gave me instant recognition of the person.

“Diana?” I call the being’s name in total surprise because this place was the last place I would expect to find the being. “What are you doing here?”

“I need your help.”
