Chapter 40
KIRA:
I blink my eyes repeatedly at the sight of the one who just talked, putting a likely end to the issue going on between me, Kelvin, and Sophie’s gang. I can’t believe my eyes because what I am seeing calls for a lot of surprises.
The one who just put the whole ordeal to order was the pack’s beta, Thompson. And right beside him was someone I would never expect to meet at such a close range in quite a number of years — Alpha Simon!
Our alpha was here. He was really here in our school in flesh and blood. Of course, everyone would know him because he is not a hidden figure but what would be of surprise to every one of us present in the hallway would be the fact that he is here in the academy.
I don’t know what prompted him to be here. I literally have no idea. But to see him here means there is something important that he has to tend to lest he would not be accompanied by his beta as well as some elite warriors.
“Isn’t it too early to be picking up a fight, young ladies?” the beta asks, his baritone voice being directed to Sophie and her friends. I look back at Sophie to see her and the others have backed away from me with their heads bowed in remorse. “And to the rest of you, don’t you have anything better to do than watch a bunch of you try to fight it out over here? Or is this a norm in the school? Oh gosh, I cannot believe I passed through this academy years back,”
There is a bit of spite in the beta’s tone after castigating everyone around. I don’t know why I felt glad that he gave everyone a piece. It was more like he was fighting for me even though that was not the case. Still, it was nice that someone gave them something to remember.
“Now, out the way!”
Without wasting time, I move away from the path alongside the others, giving the alpha and his team the chance to pass through. And as they pass, we all see from the other end the head of the academy coming out with a few teachers to usher the alpha in. Funny how they knew nothing about the alpha’s visit until now. Surely they were not informed.
The whole crowd disperses immediately after the alpha’s team was out of sight. What I do is wait until they have all gone but I guess should have simply done that in time because waiting behind meant Kelvin was not prepared to let me be yet.
“I thought you said your friend is unable to get in touch with the alpha. What then is Alpha Simon doing here?” I hear him ask. But instead of responding to his question, I start to walk away from the hallway to head to my classroom.
I still do not say to Kelvin yet and neither does he persist in keeping up with me. Yeah, I was finding it annoying but because of my mood to ignore him completely, I could not lash out at him for what he is doing.
“Kira, you cannot keep ignoring me. At least let me in on what is going on? Is the alpha here because of what I showed you?” he asks another question.
“Leave me alone, Kelvin. Didn’t I already tell you Bradley said he could not help us?” I finally respond, not without raising my voice a little at him.
“Then why is the alpha here?”
Now that was ridiculous. And before I know it, I have stopped to look at him with annoyance not hidden from my expression.
“You saw the alpha not too long ago, didn’t you? Why didn’t you just ask me what he is here for? Huhn? Why are you instead bugging me about something I have no idea about? Just let me be. I have no intention to even last a second more talking to you.”
And with that I totally storm off from him, leaving him to his plight of finding out the alpha’s intention.

REID:
“You know I could still beat you in a fight,” is what I say to my sparring partner as I dodge an incoming kick to my face. That was so close but I was faster which was what gave me the advantage of successfully evading it.
“You think?” is the response I get. And then my opponent is coming at me with a flying knee.
I evade that as well and counter with a kick toward my opponent in the air. But with an arm, it was blocked.
I wasn’t done there as I decide to go for the attack in place of being defensive like I have been all through since the spar began.
Attacking changed the momentum of the fight because it seemed at first that my opponent would wade me off after being on the defensive for so long. My attacking prowess with my arms and feet was super fast that it seems my opponent would not be able to keep up with me.
But I was stunned by a kick to my thighs which I never expected. It makes me stop for a while and say, “Wow, I’m impressed.”
And just before my opponent could say anything as a response or even process that, I am on the go. With a sidekick and then a hit with my arm on the shoulder, my opponent is down to the ground.
“Ow,” is the whimpering sound from my opponent who is grabbing onto her shoulder.
I wipe off the sweat trickling down my face with the back of my palm. “I told you I would beat you, didn’t I? So much for thinking you have improved up to my level.”
“I’m a lady for fuck sake, Reid! Why did you have to hit too hard?” she says as she starts to get up from the ground.
A smile makes its way to my lips. “Sorry, Venice. I could not help it,”
I watch my lady opponent hold her shoulder which had a huge impact from what I did to her. Apparently, it is my sister whom I just taught a lesson in hand-to-hand combat.
“Damn, you hit me so hard!” she complains again.
“You should not be complaining, you know. Didn’t you just boast that you have become much better than what you used to be? A few minutes ago you were running your mouth over the place,”
“Still doesn’t mean you had to floor me to the ground like that. What if I broke a bone?”
“It would repair itself in no time,”
She scoffs and then starts to walk over to the balcony that leads down into here, the training area. As she sits she still has her hand on her shoulder. I don’t think I hit you hard. Pretty sure she is just exaggerating. That is what she mostly does as a means of having attention to herself.
“Who is your trainer?” is the first question I ask her as I join her to sit on the balcony. Need to relax myself because I am a bit exhausted. The spar lasted longer than expected.
“Fredrick,” she says.
“Well, tell Fredrick that he sucks.”
“Why?”
“How could your trainer not teach you how to defend yourself in a fight? Do you think fights only involve attacks? I could tell from your moves that you hardly have any idea on how to defend yourself in a fight which means if you wear yourself out from attacking in combat, you would be easily defeated because of your lack of knowledge about defending. So pathetic.” I end my explanation about her skills with a scoff just to let her know how unimpressed I am.
“Well, you don’t have to do him dirty like that. Because if you are to blame anyone, you should be blaming me who decided to focus on one aspect of combat. Defensive sucks, especially knowing I could control a fight without it,” she counters.
“I will still say your trainer has no proper knowledge of combat training. He is your teacher. He should know what is best for you. And what is best is that you know how to combine the two in a fight. It is the only proper way you can ever succeed in one.”
“Okay, okay. I’ve heard you, alpha. I’ll make sure I work on that aspect. Is that okay?”
I just give her the look to tell her she is being ridiculous before looking away.
A while later, after moments of staring into space, I ask, “How are they?”
“Who? Mom and dad?”
“Yes, them.”
“They are good. Extended their regards to you on my way here.”
“Father must really hate me now,”
“Why would you think so? Because of the dispute you two had?”
I stare at her briefly and go back to liking ahead. “You know about that?”
“Everyone knows,” she says. “Father came home fussing about the whole thing when he got back home that day. I could have sworn that he wanted to tear the house down because of how angry he was.”
