Chapter 70

KIRA:

My nervousness was on an all-time high as I await the arrival of the academy head.

It has been close to three minutes now since I was told to sit in his office to wait for him, with the teacher who brought me here citing he had gone for a quick meeting with a few of the staff. I even had to ask why the head had summoned me in the first place from the teacher but he gave a negative response to that. Now I just have to wait until the head comes before I can be sure of what is going on.

To while away the time, I start to tap my fingers on the arm of the chair. The chair had a wooden arm even though the entire seat was made up of leather. That was what made the sound a bit loud in here. Would be sure to attract the attention of someone else if I was not alone.

The instant I hear the sound of the door behind me opening, I stop tapping on the chair. My breath hitches as the level of nervousness in me increase more than it was a few seconds ago. This was going to be hard for me to go through.

“Relax yourself. You are not in any trouble,” I hear that which most certainly came from the head who was now right in front of me and seated across the desk.

His words sound assuring but it was not enough to make me calm. I know I won’t until I hear what he called me in here for. So it would be best if he gets on with it in time.

What I do to respond to what he said is nod. At least for him to know that I was in line with him whereas I was not.

I watch him from across the desk. If I did not know him too well, I would think that he was just a regular teacher. He looked pretty young to even be any close to being the head of school. I mean, quite a number of teachers seem older than he is. But here he is, seated on the highest level of office in the academy.

“Miss Denver,” he starts to say by calling me formally, “I called you in here for something that I promise won’t waste your time as you still have to head home. I should have reached out to you since the school hours started but I've been so preoccupied with work that I could not make out the time to.”

“No problem, sir,” I say for the first time since I got in here. “What do you want to see me for?”

“I heard about the death of your parents. And I would like to share my condolences with you. I understand you must be going through a lot right now,”

I flash him a weary smile to show my appreciation. I guess I never expected that the school would find out about my predicament. Guess they know are in on things going on about with the students of the school.

“I’m grateful for that, sir. I never expected that anyone would even care,” I was telling him that with the most sincerity in me. It was hard to come by so I hope he believes me when I say that.

“It’s our duty, Miss Denver. You are a student of this school so it's only right that we care about the things that go on with you. Which is why I want to know why you have to be in school today when you should be home taking care of yourself.”

I shrug. “But I'm fine,” I tell him.

“I know you're not. You might think you are but I’m telling you now that you're not. And you want to know why? Because your mental health has been affected by what is going on with you. Take a look at yourself right now. Pretty sure that's why you got into a fight today.”

Confusion instantly overwhelms me. “A fight? I never got into any.” I counter.

“Then where did you get the bruise on your face from?”

Bloody hell. I forgot about that. I should have been more careful during the whole showdown with the girls.

“It– It was from a fall,” I lie.

The head gives me a look that was enough to let me know I was not being honest. But no way I was going to come out truthful to him lest I get myself into trouble. I don’t want any of that.

“In multiple places?” he asks.

“Yes,”

“You know what... Let us put that aside. What I need to let you know now is that you do not have to be in school for the rest of the week. Take some days off from the academy and focus on prioritizing your mental health. Trust me, you’ll need it.”

“But I'm fine, sir—”

He raises a hand to hush me. “It is not a request, Miss Denver. Do as I say.”

REID:

“We should not be helping her, Reid.” Hunter says to me as we both make our way to my study room.

“We already talked about this yesterday. Why are you still bringing this up?” I demand, a little infuriated by the topic of discussion. It took a lot of energy to trash it out the day before now it was being brought back to the table. I hate reoccurrences like this.

“I know,” Hunter admits from beside me, “but I am still not okay with what we agreed on.”

“When are you ever okay with an agreement?”

“This is different, Reid. This determines the safety of the pack and yet you want to put it in jeopardy by letting members of the Red Legion pack cohabit with us. How does that even sound?”

I have to stop. It was getting me pissed off that he has to let me get into this conversation when I mostly do not want to.

I ask for a start, “How many of them are here?”

“About ten of them... Maybe even more.” Hunter says.

“Why would there be more? I specially made Diana call out all of them from the shadows. So why would she go about not presenting the rest of them?” I quiz with my brows raised questioningly.

“They operate in the shadows. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them didn’t show up when you had instructed her to do so.”

“That’s absurd,” I say and then start to walk away from him as I continue with my journey to head to my study.

Hunter quickly reaches me. Apparently, he is not done. “Reid, you have to listen to me. It is not safe having them here with us. Tomorrow, they could decide to turn against us by wiping out everyone in this pack with no way for us to fight back. You know that, already.”

“Get your mind off such, man. Such will not happen. You are only overthinking.”

“I'm being realistic. This is not me thinking too much about the situation. I know what I am saying when I say we cannot fight back should they decide to attack us. Ten of them which seems small could be the end of us all. It is only logical that we do the right thing by not allowing them to stay here with us,”

“Since you don’t want them here, give me a good idea where they should be and I will most certainly follow your advice,” I tell him, waiting for a good response from him. But even after I get into my study with him, he has still not said anything. “See... you have nothing to say. Why don’t you just give up and agree with the idea of them being with us for the time being? I have no intention of making their stay permanent. So don’t worry too much about it.”

I take a seat on my armchair behind my work desk. I first take a look at the pile of documents I have on the desk before looking up at Hunter who is standing with no intention of sitting.

“Are you still pondering on it?” I ask him.

“Of course, I still am. You don't expect me to be happy with your decision. Might seem convincing but I don't think it is the right way to go.”

“I know,”

He instantly walks up to my desk with a look of confusion plastered on his face. “Then why the hell are you going on with it?”

I waste no time in responding to that. “Because it is the right thing to do,” I say. “The Elder, before his death, had given us advice on how to curb the issue. Which means he helped us when we sought his help. So why shouldn’t reciprocate that help after his death? Not to forget that it is our fault that he died in the first place.”

“Are you now blaming yourself for his death?”

“No. Just take it as me admitting to the fact that we should not have consulted him in the first place.”

Hunter scoffs. “Not like his help has even curbed the situation already,” he states. “Don’t forget that you are setting your father up against yourself already. It will not look good this time around if he shows up again.”

I lean back on the armchair nonchalantly. “Let him come. I will usher him the way he needs to be ushered.”
