Chapter 56

REID:
“Where did that come from?” I ask as I look behind me first. There was no explainable means to how whatever that was could have been thrown because right behind Hunter and me was my quarters which has the door closed.
I have to neglect that for the time being because a scream coming from the affected quarters that got something crashed into.
A brief stare at Hunter and we both start to run off in the direction of the building. It was quite a distance away but we were sure of covering the distance in a few seconds.
Before we even arrive at the quarters, we could see some members of the household start to rush out of the building in haste. Some even tripped to the ground on the way out and it was all because of the confusion that came with their movements.
“Did you see what happened?” I ask one of them upon our arrival. It was a teenage boy who looked scared to death.
“We– We ju– just heard a crash,” he stutters as he responds and I know that I cannot get anything decent from him so I let him go, moving to talk to one of the adults.
“Tell me you saw something,” I say to the woman among them and she shook her head to decline.
I instantly knew that this was going to be hard. There was no way I was going to find out anything reasonable even though I am dying to find out what happened.
I turn around to see some warriors around with weapons clutched. They reacted to the sound of what they heard, apparently. But it might be a waste of time because there is nothing here to use their weapons against.
Facing Huber, I ask, “Do you think it makes sense?”
“Why don’t we go inside and check what it was?” he suggests.
I clamor on it a little because it seems not too good an idea to consider judging from the fact that we have no idea what we could be up against by going into the quarters. What if it was something dangerous that we have no power to go against? How then will we be able to survive whatever comes our way?
“I don’t know if that's a good idea,” I say while looking at the roof of the building that suffered such damage. “You sure we are not getting ourselves into trouble by going in there?”
“You scared?” was the response he gives to me which makes me give him an icy look for trying to paint me as a coward.
“You know better than to tease me at this point,” I tell him and without urging him on, I start to approach the building. But I dish out an instruction to one of the warriors before I go in. “Get in touch with the head warrior and tell him to come here this instant.”
Getting into the building, I take my time to observe the inside through the entrance. What I do is heighten my senses so I could get anything suspicious. Mostly something that comes with a lot of aura. I know that anything like that would certainly put me on edge because I most definitely would not be able to handle anything like that.
Once I realize that the coast is clear, I nod to signal to Huber who was standing behind me, giving him the go-ahead that we could proceed into the building.
I look up the instant I get in because I want to observe the roof where the crash had occurred. It was one hell of a crash because it looked like the roof was going to tear down if care was not taken.
It was at that time that I realized how much force came with what had done such damage to the building. If that thing had had any reason to hit either of Hunter or me, or even hit one of the members of the household in here, I think the damage would have been something not good. The thought of that instantly causes a skip in my heartbeat.
I take my mind off that as I try to look around for any evidence of what might have caused this issue here. I could hear the sound of those waiting outside, particularly the members of this quarters as they tried to console themselves even though they were all safe.
“This doesn’t make sense,” I find myself saying after some time of looking around and not finding anything substantial to point to. Made me feel like I was just going through a waste of time.
“You think?” I hear Hunter say in response to what I said and it makes me look at him because he sounds like he has seen something.
When I do stare in his direction, I see that he is looking at one corner of the room we just got into. And at the corner, I could see what he has his eyes fixated on.
It was the substance. Yes, the slimy-looking thing that we have seen in three households already in the past.
The realization makes my feet tremble because I instantly have an idea of what might have happened in here.
I cannot believe that I was this close to being nabbed by the thing and the feeling was totally not good. And when I even look at Hunter, I could sense that he was going through the same emotional turmoil because we had both been together when it happened.
I sigh and then look away from him and the substance as well. I completely take my gaze away from that direction as I look to get out of the room.
This was not looking good. This was totally not looking good. It has been a while since the last occurrence of whatever that substance is. I thought that putting the pack members together in almost the same location means they would be safe. But it seems it is about to come back to us. It is not done with what it started. And thinking about it gave me the chills.
It was then I remember that I sent for Ryu but he still hasn’t shown up. So I decided to go out of the building to check on the warrior that I sent to bring Ryu here.
However, when I get out of the building, there is no sign of the warrior I had instructed to reach Ryu. And when I ask the others that are gathered around, they told me he has run off in what seemed like a matter of urgency. But what could be more urgent than this?
Without further ado, I reach for the mind-link to Ryu and I realize that I could access him which I do immediately.
‘Ryu, where the fuck are you?’ I ask him.
‘I’m sorry, Alpha Reid, but I’ve got a problem on my hand,’ he answers the link but I could notice the distress in him as he did so which makes me start to speculate what could be going on.
‘And what is the problem?’ I demand.
‘You will have to come to the area around the pack square. What is going on here is much bigger than me...’

KIRA:
I was already running in the direction of the scream which was downstairs before I knew it. I did not even bother to think that I was actually in a conversation with Kelvin because I wanted to treat what I heard as important.
The effect that came with the shrill was mind-piercing. It was as if I could feel the pain of the one who did that. And for me to feel that way means whatever has happened could not be taken lightly.
By the time I get downstairs, I could see that there was a crowd packed somewhere down the hall. But it was not even in the hall in particular because I could tell that most were trying to get a look at what was going on.
I notice Kelvin by my side and he gives me a look that tells me something is indeed not right. And that was enough to make me start to find my way through the crowd because I sure as hell want to see what everyone had their eyes on.
My little structure gave me an advantage. And another advantage I had as I scramble my way through the crowd of students was the strength I now possess which made me sway through them easily.
Eventually, I was able to get to the side where I think it was all going down. And it was right at the entrance which leads into the mini combat room.
I don’t recall the last time I was in there because I tend to do away with activities related to school. So when I get in eventually, it felt like a new place to me. At least not until I see the disaster that almost made me throw up.
Right in front was a girl down on her knees while sobbing. But that was not the issue. The issue was the unmoving body in the most unethical state found next to her.
