Chapter 58

REID:
My mind is in complete disarray as I run at the fastest of speed that I have ever produced. I am trying to set my thoughts in one place but I feel divided right now which is the reason for my mental trauma. And I know when things are going bad because this state of mine is not any good for me.
I need to get to the pack square as quickly as possible. That is the major factor that had gotten me in this state but I cannot seem to get the event of the area around my quarters out of my head. I left Hunter there to oversee the issue but my mind is not at rest still.
In about a minute, I reach the pack square. And on my arrival there, I am greeted by Ryu who looks devastated. If that is the genuine way to describe the way he looks now because I could sense the turmoil in him. Can’t remember the last time I met him in this state.
“Tell me what is going on!” I instruct as I start to rush through the square just so I could get to wherever it is that the whole issue is going down because right now I have not come in sight with anything out of the ordinary.
“I think it’s here.” A panicky Ryu says but I do not get anything from that.
“What is here?” I ask.
“It.”
And just before I could ask him what he means again, I come in contact with a sight that should not even be seen by anyone else.
Instantly I pause. Because what I need to do now is gather my thoughts and believe that what I am seeing is not real. Because right on the ground ahead are bodies in states that I cannot fathom.
A close look at the bodies and I realize the massacred state they were in. What happened here? What is going on in my pack for goodness sake?
I look straight at Ryu with confusion laced on my face. Then I ask, “What happened?”
He still has panic written all over him and I think the sight I just witnessed is justifiable for the expression he is showcasing.
“I don’t know,” he says. “I was somewhere around when I received a link from one of the warriors who informed me about the bodies you are seeing now on the ground,” he stops for a second as he glances in the direction of the bodies, then back at me. “The most confusing thing about all of this is the state they are in. It looks like they were butchered.”
My gaze shoots back to the devastating scene. This was the first time I would see bodies in this kind of state and it is making me nauseous. I should not be feeling this way, I know. But I cannot help it. I have no choice at this moment and if anyone is expecting that I man up as the alpha, I would have to disappoint them at this point in time.
“And you think it was the doing of whatever has been invading the households?” I quiz after mustering enough strength to go over this issue I am facing at the moment.
“That was the first thought that came to mind.”
“But it never left a trace asides the substances we found in those households. So why would you think it is its doing?”
Ryu has no answer to my question this time around. And it makes me believe that he only made that speculation out of impulse since that is the biggest threat that has been lurking around the pack.
“Why is there no blood?” is the first question I ask when I move closer to the bodies to examine their states. And it was during that process I was able to discover something odd which lead to the question I just asked Ryu.
I watch as Ryu gives a closer look too and then says, “That's true. And I did not think even think of it before.”
Looking at the bodies, I notice that it was a pack member and a warrior. The ripped uniform said it all.
I could not bear the sight again so I choose to look away for some time before I would get the system to glance at it again. I have to remind myself that I need to act up in this scene lest I embarrass myself knowing full well that I am surrounded by my warriors.
Eventually, I feel better. And the next thing I do after that is go over to the bodies. I am much closer now, giving me a full sight of the massacred states.
Whatever it is that had done this to the bodies, I think it possessed fangs enough to chew through not just skins, but bones. Because the butchered state was revealing the bones that seem to have been ripped off the bodies.
Goodness, this is not looking good. I have no idea who they are, and I am referring to the bodies, but they do not deserve to die like this. Wonder how their family would feel when they find out about this.
“Was any other being here when you arrived at this place?” I ask Ryu who was right behind me as I continue to examine the bodies.
“None. Just the guard that informed me.”
“Mark him for me. I have questions to ask him later. But for now, we need to question ourselves about what could have happened here because this makes no sense.”
I put a thumb over my lip while trying to process the whole scenario. I look around first to see if I would get a reason to link something with this incident. I wanted to see if perhaps a struggle had occurred but doing so, I could not get anything from it. It was like the butchered ones were cornered and laid to waste just like that which makes no sense judging that a warrior was among them.
“This is definitely not the work of rogues,” I comment on the situation while taking a look at one of the buildings. It was the particular one that was destroyed during Hunter's rampage. “But we cannot affirm as well if it is doing of the substance that we have been seeing in the households as evidence. My mind, though, points more at the substance because of the lack of blood around here but the fact that the bodies are still here makes me want to rethink my options.”
I walk around a little and then stop at some point where I thought I saw a scratch. It prompts me to bend so could take a closer look at it and I noticed that it was indeed a scratch from something. I think it should be claws due to the level at which the scratch took place.
“Take a good look at this,” I say to Ryu who quickly comes over to see what I was staring at. “You see this? Although all around it feels like no struggle had occurred, this looks like evidence that a bit of a scuffle did happen," I tell him.
“So perhaps the warrior of the pack member had been in the middle of a shifting when they had completely been killed?” Ryu states.
“That should be it,” I say and then stand up to my feet. “Still I want to make sense of all of this. I want to know why I am confused about this whole thing. Do you think what the Elder told us is coming to pass already? You know, the thing about it being upon us?”
Ryu looks skeptical. But I am certain he is not as skeptical as I am about this whole thing. Yes, I have my mind filled with the thought that the substance had played a part in all of this, but then my mind is also driving me nuts because I am thinking as well that this could have been the work of anyone. Anyone at all who had a grudge against another. Makes little to no sense but that is what I am thinking of right now.
“As you said, we cannot be too sure. Perhaps it could be. And perhaps not. But we know now that things are not right which should be a cause for alarm.”
“And did I also mention that my head and that of Hunter could have been taken off our shoulders ten minutes ago?”
When I say that, I notice the shock on Ryu’s face as I start to walk away from him.
“What? How did this happen?” he asks just right behind me which means he was following me the instant I walk off from him.
“I don't know,” I admit. “And that was what we were trying to find out. But if you want to know something that would make you surprised? Here is it. We found the substance around the location I am coming from which is just next to my quarters.”
I end the discussion there, leaving Ryu with instructions to see to it that the bodies were taken care of.
