Chapter 53
REID:
“You really have a mate in the Green Dales?” Venice is the one as expected to ask me after my announcement. This was moments after she and Ryu have recovered from the shock of what I told them because it was evident in their expressions that they did not want to believe a word I said initially.
“I do, but let us not go into that. I want to spare myself the details of having to explain what she is like to both of you. I am sure you two will come across her soon,” I tell her, which was a statement directed to both of them instead of just her.
I wait for the next question to pour in but it seems they are both still trying to process the whole thing about what I told them. I have no idea why it is such a big deal to them and when I cannot take their silence anymore, I decided to do the questioning instead.
“Why are you two reacting to this like it is some sort of big deal to have a mate from the Green Dales? Is it because she is from a rival pack? Not like I am the first to have a mate from a pack that is different from mine.” I state, expressing how ridiculous I find their attitudes to be.
“You do not understand, Alpha Reid,” Ryu speaks. “Yes, it is no surprise that you have a pack from a rival pack. Such happens now and then. But this is more like a shock to us because the last time someone from this pack got mated to a member of the Green Dales pack was long before the crisis between us started. That was many years ago. Why do you think we believe there is no possibility of ever getting into an agreement with the Green Dales pack? It is because it is already believed that nothing between us could ever happen. Not even a spark,”
I find myself processing the information that Ryu just gave out. It was something I have never had the chance to come across until now which is why it feels unique to me.
“Are you trying to tell me now that I am sort of changing a long-time situation between the Green Dales and the Night Blaze packs?” I ask while still trying to make sense of the uniqueness of the information I just received.
Ryu nods in agreement. “Yes,” he says, “you and the girl.”
“But this is ridiculous. I mean, yeah it feels good that I am the one changing the tides already but why did such ever happen? Is it something that was preprogrammed? Or was it the moon goddess just messing with every one of us?”
“I’ll say it’s fate,” Venice chooses to respond in place of Ryu prompting me to look at her. “Yes, it might seem like the moon goddess has all of us all played but it might be something fated already. I am just trying to look on the brighter side of things here,”
Perhaps she was right. But I am not going to admit to that because I still find it weird that events choose to play out like this. I am sure they will even go through a different stage of shock when they find out that the girl is a minor. Which means it would take two years before I can affirm the bond with the girl. But until then, it will be more like I am in a phase of a one-sided relationship.
I get up to my feet. “Enough talking about me,” I announce. “We still need to check up on Hunter, see how he is faring. Perhaps it is even time we release him from his bondage.”
When I tell them that, I do not wait to get a response from them. I am sure they were in total agreement so it would be a waste of time waiting to know if they were in or not.
Obviously, they were in because the moment I step out of the living area, they both followed suit as I head for the entryway so I could leave the building and head for Hunter’s quarters where we have him tied up.
A few minutes later, the three of us have arrived at the quarters to see Hunter. He is in the same position that I left him the last time I was here to check on him.
I still recall meeting with him the last time. It made me see him in a different light as one who tries so hard to act tough in front of others but deep down he is going through a lot with no one to share what he is going through with.
I had to make him realize that I failed at my job of not being his alpha alone, and being his friend as well. I should have offered a listening ear to him when he needed help and perhaps not have tried to push him away but I was a mess in all of that.
It was entirely my fault. My attitude of not giving a fuck to things going on around me caused that which is why I have to admit that I need to give myself a check because there were a lot of things wrong with me.
“I think it is time you get that shower now, Hunter,” I say to Hunter who just dishes out a lazy smile at me.
He looks away from me after that and focuses his gaze on my sister who decided to sit on the chair she had sat on the first day all three of us were here together with Hunter. That was the day of the incident when we had brought him in here to chain him down to his bed lest he wakes up to launch another round of attack on us.
“Good thing you are here this time around, Venice,” Hunter says wearily to her. “I have to apologize for messing up your coming back to the pack. I was not in control of the circumstances,”
Looking at Venice, I could notice that she had a warm smile on he face which she does not hesitate to flash at him. “It's okay. Just focus on getting better, okay,” she says to which he nods.
“I was at the Green Dales pack today,” I announce to draw Hunter’s attention to me.
“How did it go?”
“Expected,” I say. “Simon would not even listen to what I had to say. He thinks I am making it all up to try to reconcile with his pack. But little does he know that I have more than enough information about the ongoings in his pack.”
“I knew he was going to be a screw-up. Possibly going to take more than two trips to his pack to convince him that you mean everything you have to say to him,”
“Maybe even more,”
“Hunter, did you already know that Reid has a mate in the Green Dales?” Venice asks, interrupting the discussion I am having with my beta.
Hunter gives me a look that wants to know if it was okay to tell her what he knows. I give him the go-ahead with a slight nod.
“I've known for a while,” Hunter admits to the claim and I notice the disappointment that flashes on Venice’s face.
“I feel like I am the odd one out here. How can Hunter know about my brother’s mate but I as his sister had no idea about it?” she laments.
“You are saying that like you are around here with us,” I bring that to her notice. “And you seem to have forgotten that Ryu who is here with us always is just finding out about it today as well,”
Venice flashes an apologetic look at Ryu and I do not even look in Ryu’s direction to know if he acknowledged that. Knowing him, he would instantly because he has never been the type to keep on with matters for too long.
“Anyways, Hunter. I think it is about time we release you from the chains. Although we cannot determine if you will not go berserk once more, we are certain that the silver would have helped correct the dysfunction in your system,”
After I announce that to the hearing of others, I focus on the one who the information really concerns and I realize that he seems a bit worried, maybe skeptical, about what I just said.
“What’s wrong?” I demand.
“Are you sure it would be okay to set me free now? I know you think that I might be okay but who knows what could happen once these chains go off. Like the last time, I might not be in control of my reasoning.”
“We are aware,” I tell him, “which is why we have set up a defensive measure by being here. So if you enter into a berserk state like the last time, we would know what to do. And as we are trying to take the chains off now, be sure to inform us when you feel something strange in you.”
