Chapter 41: Dinner Disaster ll

"You have had your moment, Bella, now stay the hell out of this!" His tone is harsh but I'm not surprised to see that it has no bite to it. He steps away from me and towards Logan, his face hardening again as he continues, "We're done here, we've been done since the day you betrayed me, and I will not stand here and listen to you try to justify your atrocities!!"
Logan's fists clench tighter, his eyes flashing a dangerous shade of red and a low growl leaves him, "you don't fucking know what I did! It was better for everyone if she died, Alec! Better for the world, better for us! Fucking hell, she didn't even die by my hands!! After all you came to save your mate from your insane brother"
"Better for her! Better for you!" Alec throws his hands in the air, "how was trying to kill my mate better for you?! How was putting a knife to her throat any different from murdering her"
"SHUT UP ALREADY!!!" Logan shouts and a deafening silence falls over us all. For a long minute neither of them say anything, they just stare each other down as though challenging the other to attack first. "You were so fucking blind to see the signs, You were so wrapped up in your stupid love fantasy that you never noticed the fake ness of Julianne."
Alec clenches his jaw, his eyes narrowing dangerously, "You don't know anything about her!"
"I DON'T KNOW ABOUT HER? That's where you are wrong, I know a lot of things that even you do not know. Like the fact that she was in on the Alpha King's plan to kill you!"
The words seem to strike Alec like a bullet to the chest, and before I can even blink I see his fist flying in the air. The punch lands squarely square in Logan's left eye, and his head snaps back, sending his body stumbling backwards with an ear piercing crunch. There is a sharp cry, and before anyone can react, I see Logan stumble back against the opposite wall. He cradles his bleeding nose with his now injured hand, but much to my surprise he does not retaliate.
"Say one more foul word about her and I swear I will slit your throat!" His voice booms out and every cell in my body seems to freeze.
He looks feral and deadly. The most terrifying thing is not his rage, nor the way he towers over his brother; the thing that truly scares me, is the sheer hatred in his gaze.
For the first time in my since I met him, I feel fear toward my mate. It is a cold, icy feeling seeping down my spine and freezing my veins. I am terrified of how close we are standing to a confrontation that could result in death. I am terrified because I am afraid of what might happen next... Even my powers seems to fade into nothingness as I stare at Logan and Alec.
Alec is breathing heavily, his fist trembling by his side. His whole body is rigid, and I can tell that he is fighting the urge to take another swing.
Logan's lip curls, "Don't make promises you can't keep, little brother."
Alec lunges forward again, and I jump out of the way. His fist slams into the wall, creating a huge hole, and blood drips down the bricks. The sound of shattering glass is almost drowned out by the pounding of my heart, which feels like it is ready to burst out of my rib cage at any moment.
The silence settles, the air heavy, until finally I find my voice. "Are you two done?" My voice comes out soft, as though I am speaking to a wounded animal. I hold my breath as I wait for either of them to answer me, but when neither of them respond, I sigh.
I turn on my heels and walk toward Leila, who is staring with wide eyes at the scene. She swallows thickly before she turns to look at me, her fingers fiddling nervously with the edge of her blazer.
"Are you okay?" I ask softly , my brow furrowed.
"Yeah, fine," her voice shakes slightly, and I can't help but wonder whether she is lying or if the fear in her voice is genuine. She bites down on her bottom lip and glances quickly at Alec and then she speaks, "I just wanted two normal brothers, look what I got"
She says the last part quietly and turns to walk off, her shoulders slumped as she walks through the doors.
I turn and stare after her, letting my thoughts run wild. Is it true, what Logan said? Did Julianne really betray Alec before she died?
I shake my head, shaking off the questions I don't want to think about. Logan too gives one last glance at his mother and brother and storms out of the dining.
Alec does not even spare her a glance as he grabs my hands and pull me along with him out of the place. So much for a family breakfast.
-------
We are outside the pack house in a swift moment and Alec leads us towards his car. He’s tense, shoulders tenser than as he pulls open the door for me, and then walk to slid into his side of the car. He slams the door shut, and his hands clenched into fists. I don't know why, but I want to run forward and hug him or something, to show that I am there for him. Instead, I settle on watching him, and when he meets my eyes, he seems more resigned, if anything. The drive is silent.
The silence was not comfortable and it is only when we arrive at our destination that I realize how tense I am myself. We are here, at his house, how long as it been since I've been here? Five months? Six? I look around again, taking in everything with new eyes. It looks... different. Different than before. The difference, the first time I was here, it was as his caretaker even if that was fake, but now things are different. But not in a bad way. In fact, it's kind of nice.
Alec opens the door, looking back at me expectantly. I blink and then smile at him as I climb out of the car. He smiles softly, but it doesn't quite reach his eyes. I walk up the steps and pause, turning back to face him. He takes a deep breath and holds out his hand for me, which I take gently. There's still a tightness in his jaw as we enter the house but I decide not to say anything about that. I'm here for him after all.
When he leads me through the foyer into the kitchen, he pauses in front of the fridge and then turns to look back at me. His eyes flick over my outfit, lingering slightly on my legs, before coming back up to meet my gaze. “You look good,” he says simply, "do you want to eat?" he adds.
"Yeah," I reply.
He nods once and starts rummaging through the cabinets for food. "I have some pasta in here..." he mutters.
"Sounds great." I grin and follow him, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in my stomach. We have a lot to talk about, but maybe now is not the time.
