Chapter 35 - Xavier.

After a long talk with his lawyers, Xavier decided that taking legal action was the only way he could show Amelia that he didn't cheat. There was only one problem, Daphne couldn't be found. She had conveniently avoided him and his team of lawyers since the ambulance had picked him up from his house. And she wasn't available at all her usual hangouts. Perhaps she suspected that it was going to happen and Xavier was going to press charges and he was.

He also needed a statement from her, he was ready to drop all the charges if she was willing to tell the truth. Daphne was once his girlfriend, and though Xavier felt nothing for her anymore, he still didn't want to end things on a bad note. He also didn't want the scandal that came with court charges. She was guilty, but he felt she was better off being left off with a warning and nothing more.

His daily routine was simple these days, it started with him sending Amelia a voicemail since she never picked his calls. Then he sent her several messages that she also chose to ignore. He knew she needed time but he also had to tell her the truth.

His routine was slowly killing him too, but all he could do was wait for when Amelia would be ready to listen out to him. He considered going to New York, but he was very sure that she was going to slam the door on his face. He only wished that there was a way he could clear things up.
Although it was the last place he wanted to go, Xavier decided to check out Daphne's apartment one last time.
He wasn't sure if she would be there, but he supposed that dropping in on her unannounced might give her quite a scare. And he would be lucky if he found her at home, he had a lot of things to clear up with her.

Daphne's apartment was far away from Atherton and it was a long lonely one hour drive to her apartment. He wondered if he was making a mistake by being in the same space as she was but then he decided it was the best he could do if he wanted to clear her name.

"Oh Hello Mr Black." Daphne's housekeeper answered the door with a nervous look on her face as her eyes darted around quickly.

"Is Daphne home?"

He asked simply as he stood in from of the door and watched the woman decide whether or not to lie to him.

He decided to make it easier for her.

"I know she's home. You wouldn't be here if she wasn't."

That was the truth, Daphne had so much distrust for housekeepers and maids that she never let them in her apartment whenever she wasn't around. She only preferred them working when she was around. She claimed it was because she was a celebrity, Xavier felt she was being too paranoid.

"Mr Black, I'm not supposed to let you in..."

The woman started with fear in her eyes as she glanced around nervously.

"I have to see Daphne. It's very important."

The woman slowly shook her head.

"If I let you in, she'll definitely fire me! And I need this job!"

She whispered as she watched Xavier wearily. Xavier could tell that the fear in the woman's eyes was real and all he could do to calm her down was to help her, or else she wouldn't let her see Daphne.

He reached out for his breast pocket of his black T-shirt and pulled out his business card.

"Here is my card. If she fires you, come to me. I'll give you a better job. Please just let me in."

The woman collected the card, amusement etched all over her plump face. She was not only surprised, she slowly became elated as she subconsciously opened the door wider for Xavier to come in.

"I'll go get her."

She said as she left Xavier in the living room.

"Thank you."

Xavier murmured as he slowly paced around the living room. It was a beautiful and modern aesthetic design that was so impersonal that it looked bland. Devoid of human emotions or an artistic personal touch. Well, that was Daphne's style. Cold and aesthetic.

He was still studying a delicate glass figurine when Daphne sauntered out with a frown on her face.

She turned to look at the old woman with a cruel glare on her face.

"I want you out of here now! You can't even listen to simple instructions."

The housekeeper stood in a corner looking small and tired. She hopefully glanced at Xavier and he nodded his head in reassurance to the housekeeper.

"I was the one who insisted. You don't need to fire her."

Xavier said and Daphne shrugged. she was wearing a red robe which left little to the imagination. It was sleazy and it was see through. He averted his gaze so he wouldn't be tempted to look at the outline of her body under the flimsy silk.

"I do actually. She is incompetent."

Daphne insisted and Xavier glared at her.

"I need to have a serious talk with you."

Daphne shrugged as she seductively sat on one of the armchairs, crossing her legs in a way that made the robe expose her golden long legs.

"About?"

She asked as she opened her robe a little bit to reveal her ample cleavage. The action didn't move Xavier, in fact, his eyes were solely on Daphne's face.

"Actions always have consequences Daphne and you thought you were going to go scot free after spiking my drink but you thought wrong."

Daphne's coy smile faltered a bit before she masked it with cold indifference.

"You don't have proof of that."

Xavier shrugged, still standing in front of Daphne.

"Oh I do. The toxicology reports show it. And I am so disappointed in you."

"Even if it did! I didn't do anything. There's no way you're going to link this back to me Xavier. Or clear your name in front of Amelia."

Xavier furrowed his eyebrows.

"That's why you did it? To make Amelia think that I was cheating on her?"

He asked and Daphne shrugged as she settled in her chair.

"It worked didn't it? Your little Amelia scurried off like a rat back to the New York sewers where she came from."

Xavier's jaw clenched as his hands turned into balls of fists. He had to restrain himself, but Daphne was pushing it.

He took a deep breath.

"I've talked to my lawyers. There's substantial evidence that you did it. I don't want to go to court, because it'll be the end of your career. But you will pay."

There was a short pause as Daphne stared at Xavier incredulously, she knew it was inevitable that she would get caught, but she never expected that Xavier would go as far as making her pay for it.

She overestimated his feelings for her, if there was any left.

"Xavier... I'm your friend. We've once been in love, you can't do this to me! I didn't do it."

Xavier shook his head as he pocketed his hands.

"But you did. And it cost me Amelia. You didn't only spike my drink, you also sexually assaulted me. Like I said, there are consequences. There might be an out of court dispute resolution. If I'm kind enough."

He warned and Daphne's jaw dropped.

"What are you going to do to me?"

She stammered.

"Xavier, please don't be irrational... I didn't mean to do it."

Xavier chuckled.

"Didn't mean to? I don't think so. Go get your lawyers ready. And maybe a lot of money too."

"I might be willing to agree to a huge settlement."

He warned as he turned to leave, Daphne rushed to meet him as she hugged him from behind.

He tried to pry her off him but she wasn't budging and he didn't want to hurt her.

"Leave me alone Daphne. Get off me!"

He shouted as he struggled with her.

"No! Please Xavier. I'm sorry. You have to forgive me!"

"Release me first." Xavier snapped as he breathed heavily, tired from trying to shake Daphne off him.

She slowly removed herself from him and pulled her robe towards herself. feeling suddenly self conscious. Her eyes were wet with tears and her mascara was streaming down her face, laving dark circles under her eyes and dark lines.

She was pouting like a petulant spoilt child, which was exactly what she was despite her age.

"I admit. I did drug you. But I didn't know what it was!"

She cried out amidst sobs that Xavier had no use for hearing. She was still going to pay either way.

"I got it from a friend and she told me it was a sedative and all... It wasn't supposed to hurt you. I swear I never meant to hurt you."

"But you meant to seduce me didn't you? Because even till now, my memory from that night is still pretty hazy."

"No! It's not like that, I think the drug must have done something to you. You were the one who came to me. I swear! I didn't assault you, You told me that you wanted it."

Xavier's mouth hung out in shock. How much of his memories did she think he lost that night?

He still clearly remembered her forcing him out of his clothes while he mumbled a slurry of words. And that was all he remembered, she coming up to him and he weakly waving her off.

"You'll be hearing from my lawyers."

He finally said as he walked out.

"You'll never be able to prove it. She'll never take you back!"

Daphne screamed as he walked out of the apartment. He didn't know why he got involved with her in the first place. She was never like this. She was calm, intelligent and smart when he had met her. And when she refused his engagement and called things off, at first he had been disappointed.

But now, Xavier had never been more relieved that he didn't marry her.
