Chapter 22 - The Job.
Daphne had chosen the park because it would be crowded as usual.
The park covered a wide area that could fit about three small houses. It was hilly with a tall tree or two near one hill. There were benches for people to sit in every corner and jogging tracks were all around the edges of the park. The west corner had some swings too on which many children used to come and play.
Flower hedges and bushes grew all around; this made the park look more pleasant and attractive. It was a beautiful place; and it was a pleasurable place to relax and take in some cool fresh air. It was always crowded during Sumner and it was the best place that she she could blend in with other people. Especially when she wanted to see Millie.
Entering the park, a slight breeze rustled the leaves making them fall to the solid ground one by one. The air was warm, the beams of sunlight glowing on her bare skin. Flowers were vast in the park and they concealed the freshly cut green grass. The pathway was nothing more than dirt littered with random rocks. The children are playing and the parents talking among each other.
She never did mention her reasons for seeing Millie, she just knew that she needed to see her. After hearing the news, for some reason beyond her control, she was mad. Amelia carrying Xavier's child didn't sit well with her, it didn't sit well with her at all and she couldn't deny nor hide the fact that it really hurt her. She also knew what it meant,Xavier would devote more attention to Amelia, he might even ignore her for as long as he wished.
Not to mention the fact that she had been trying to keep Lorenzo off her back, he was very relentless in his search for the truth and Daphne had still not figured out a way to deal with him. Lucky for her, he was still largely unsure of everything going on and he didn't approach Xavier. She didn't know if it meant that he was scared of what she would do if he did because she did her part in threatening him to stay off.
And one thing she knew about Lorenzo was that he loved his job as an actor too much to allow anything jeopardize it, not even her.
She was mildly confident he would not say a thing. Although she knew she had to keep an eye out for him, he could be very cunning.
Millie on the other hand she had to do something about. She did not only ask too much questions, she knew too much. Anyone that got a hold of Millie could get her to confess to a whole lot of crime that would put Daphne in trouble.
She had been thinking of ways to cut her off before the news of Amelia's pregnancy came to her.
That was when she realised that she had one last job to do.
She sat in one of the park benches as she looked around watching people walk across. She saw some people with kids and it made her feel a little tingly as she looked at them.
Being pregnant was never really hard for her, it was the thought that she would be a terrible mother that constantly hurt her. Sometimes, she blamed herself for fabricating the whole lies, it was all because of the love she had for Xavier.
Sometimes, she felt like she loved Xavier more than her unborn child, because he was my borne of Xavier.
She looked around again and saw Millie approaching her. Millie still had one of her work clothes from Xavier and Amelia house. And her eyes were darting around like she was scared.
Finally, she sat at the edge of the bench and Daphne cleared her throat.
"It certainly took you a while to get here..."
"Sorry, had to find a reasonable excuse to leave."
Millie sighed as she panted loudly, she was out of breath. She had been jogging for quite a while to catch up with Daphne.
"Well, is it true?"
"It is. They've been acting like newlyweds all day, I've never seen them so happy."
Pain jabbed her chest as she heart the words that had haunted her all night.
"Hnmmmm.... Too bad."
"Too bad what?"
Millie asked confused as she stared at Daphne's face.
Daphne ignored her as she fished around her purse, till she brought out a brown envelope.
"This will be your finest and most delicate job ever. And it'll pay more than the rest...."
Millie collected the envelope, it was a thick brown heavy envelope. She was too scared to open it so she wouldn't draw attention to it so she felt the envelope and believed it to be a thick wad of cash.
"This is a lot of money..."
Millie whispered in awe and Daphne shrugged.
"Yes, it is. There's more to come when you finish the job"
"What is the job?"
Daphne reached into her purse again and brought out a small vial, she passed it to Daphne.
Millie took the little vial, it seemed to have a white powdery substance in it.
The crushed drug in the vial contained had cost Daphne a lot of money and hiding the trace that she had bought it had cost even more. But it was a necessary evil, she understood that there were things she had to do, even though she didn't want to do them, she had to do it.
"What job???"
Millie asked as fear crept into her eyes the sudden realisation of what was going on was dawning on her and it made her shocked to the bone marrow.
"Just pour that into Amelia's drink, all of it and everything will be fine."
"But...what does it do?"
She stammered as her hands started shaking uncontrollably, she knew she had bitten off a bit more than she could chew by working with someone like Daphne.
"You don't have to. Don't worry, it won't hurt her but it'll definitely hurt something else."
"Oh My God!!!"
Millie exclaimed as she covered her mouth.
"You want me to poison her!! Is this some kind of abortion pill?"
Daphne shrugged.
"So? What if it is?"
Millie threw back the vial to Daphne quickly was she stood up from the bench.
"I'm not doing that. She could die in the process.... Besides... I'm catholic. I would never do that!"
Millie angrily dropped the envelope next to her and was prepared to walk away when Daphne stopped her.
"Where do you think you're going?"
She asked as she grabbed her arm, Millie tried to shake her off but she had a iron grip.
"Away from you! I've given you back your money,. I would never do this."
"Why? How is it any different from what I've asked you to do before?"
Millie raised her eyebrows.
"Killing a baby and spying is not the same thing!"
She spat out angrily and Daphne's eyes darted around to see if they were being listened to.
"You'll still do it! You have no choice. Do you know how much dirt I have on you?"
She sneered.
"One snap of my fingers and you'd be rotting in jail all your life!"
Millie shrugged.
"Let's see if you have the same confidence when I report all this to Mr Black. I'm not doing the job Daphne. And if you push me, just remember that I have dirt on you too!"
Millie turned back and started walking away.
"I'll double the money!!!"
Daphne called out to her desperately and Millie paused. She turned back to look at Daphne with uncertainty in her eyes.
"I'll even triple it if you want!"
She smiled widely but Millie slowly walked away. Daphne smirked as she crossed her arms together. Millie would never be able to resist that much money, Daphne was confident that she would be back.
