Chapter 8 - Nana.

Grandmother?

Amelia thought as she followed Xavier closely still at a loss for words.

The room looked like an expensive New York coffee shop with a comfortable plush bed in the middle.

There were flowers, beautiful paintings, leather chairs and soft music. On the wall was a plasma screen and the bed looked  comfortable. Just one foot in the door and Amelia felt very relaxed in the serene atmosphere. It hardly looked like an hospital room.

Amelia knew the private cancer clinic was one of the best in the country and also extremely expensive. It was where most of the creme de la creme of the country went when they were diagnosed with cancer.

"Nana!" Xavier called out as he approached an elderly woman staring aloofly at the window blinds.

The woman turned slowly. She was an old wrinkly woman with black hair generously sprinkled with grey in a bun at the nape of her neck.

She was wearing grey slacks and a white cashmere V- neck cardigan.

She smiled kindly at Xavier as she raised her hands to hug him. Amelia watched them amused, Xavier was acting so warm and nice to the old woman, an attitude that he had not displayed with her at all. She looked small and frail in his arms and he treated her with so much gentleness that it was amusing.

He looked warmer with his Grandmother.

"Nana, I want you to meet somebody very special to me. She's the one I've been telling you about!"

Xavier said as he turned to Amelia with a warm smile.

"Come here sweetheart!" He called out to her and for a few seconds Amelia was shocked and wondered if he was referring to her.

"Come now sweetheart, don't be shy." He added with a forced smile and a slight warning in his eyes to Amelia.

Amelia took it as a warning and she walked further to meet him.

"Pleased to meet you Ma'am. My name is Amelia Johnston." She said as she gently shook his Grandmother's hand.

The old woman had a warm smile as she admired Amelia.

Xavier on the other hand put his hand firmly around Amelia's waist and she almost flinched.

"Oh! Such beautiful eyes. What a lovely girl Xavier. She's so precious!"

The Grandma gushed out as she hugged Amelia slightly.

"I've heard wonderful things about you. Come, sit, tell me about you. I want to hear more."

She said as she led Amelia and Xavier to the plush sofa.

Amelia and Xavier exchanged nervous glances and Xavier signalled for her to calm down.

While they were seated, Xavier's Grandmother watched her closely as she waited for Amelia to narrate the story of when they first met. Amelia was aware of the close proximity between her and Xavier, he was so close she could feel the heat radiating from his body. She could even smell his intoxicating cologne which seemed to wrap around her. Xavier placed a large hand delicately around her waist and lightly pecked her on her cheek.

His Grandma was watching both of them with joy and growing interest. The both of them were succeeding at convincing and fooling the old woman into believing that they were an actual couple.

"Nana! I've told you this story many times! We met at a charity event and I was simply blown away by how amazing she was."

Xavier said as he turned to Amelia and winked.

"Yes, I remember. It was a wonderful night. We talked and talked for hours and you know, we kind of hit it off. I knew he was into me the moment he laid his eyes on me"

Amelia said with a sly smile and Xavier frowned slightly.

"And he just couldn't help himself, he was chasing after me and asking me for dances every chance he got!"

Amelia said and Xavier's Grandmother started laughing.

"Oh Xavier!! That's not what you told me. You said she made a huge donation and you spoke to her about it.  Then she left early and you started looking for her!"

Amelia turned to Xavier with an apologetic look as he threw a glare her way, maybe she had exaggerated just a little bit.

"But I'm sure that's what happened. My grandson likes to go for what he wants. And he said you knew you were the one the very moment he saw you."

Amelia blushed at the words even though she knew they were untrue, the fact that the Grandma was so sincere and nice to her made Amelia take a natural liking to the old woman, even if she was related to Xavier Black.

"Nana, are they treating you well? How are you?"

Xavier asked with growing concern as he observed his grandmother's thin and gaunt look.
The old woman sighed.

"Oh, I definitely feel a bit better but I am not done with my chemo treatment. I'm worried I wouldn't be able to make it in time for the wedding and I don't want you two to postpone the wedding because of me."

"Oh! Really it's no trouble at all, Xavier and I can always postpone the wedding." Amelia quickly pitched in and Xavier lightly squeezed her waist but she ignored him.

"I don't think we can have the wedding without you Grandmother, Xavier definitely wants you there, Right Xavier?" Amelia turned to Xavier with a cocky grin and he smiled forcefully.

"Of course I want my grandmother there, but we've waited so long sweetheart, besides I'll talk to her doctor and see if she can come."

Amelia's smile faltered a bit. She was desperately trying to make sure that the wedding was postponed or shifted indefinitely but Xavier was determined and he seemed to gave planned everything out perfectly.

"No, you two lovebirds should go on and have the wedding with or without me, I'm happy just seeing you two together. I just hope you'll bless me with grandkids pretty soon right?"

She asked and Amelia froze. Babies?!!!

She thought as she stared at Xavier who instantly agreed to what his grandmother was saying and started talking about their plans for a baby.

Baby?

What is going on? Amelia thought as she struggled to maintain a perfect smile.

She was barely adjusting to the idea of  being married to a complete stranger that she had a one night stand with, now she had to adjust to the fact that he wanted children from her! As soon as possible too, she thought as she glared at him.

Amelia left Xavier to do all the talking till a nurse came in and told them that it was time for them to leave. Amelia couldn't help glaring at Xavier as they walked back to the car.

"So, at what point were you going to tell me that I'm supposed to be a baby making machine?"

She asked as she folded her arms. Xavier ignored her.

"Married couples have kids, it's expected."

He replied with a shrug.

"We're not a normal couple. Hell! I'm only doing this to save my family, not for your love. A baby wasn't in the agreement."

"Well, it is."

Xavier simply replied with a mocking smile.

"I'm not letting you touch me." She retorted as she tried to push away the memories of their first night that was resurfacing in her mind.

Xavier leaned in closer to her, his hot breath raising the tiny hairs on her neck. Her heart started racing as his mouth dangerously came close to her ear and Amelia was afraid that he was going to bite her.

"Oh sweetheart, I already have."
