Chapter 7 - The Doctor's appointment.
"Hello!" Xavier's Aunt Lucy called out to Amelia as she walked into the foyer with her kids, she was holding little Kyle and a black baby bag. Erica and Fiona were already running towards Amelia to give her a hug.
Showering the girls with lots of gifts had made them instantly fall in love with her, candy was the way to their hearts and Amelia learned that real quick. Kyle, the younger one was still holding on to his mother. He was so shy. Amelia thought as she hugged the two girls, even though they was only a year difference between them, the two girls looked identical in their pink summer dress and brown sandals. Their silvery blond hair was flowing down in waves behind their back.
She crouched to their size in her dotted print ruffled wrap dress and touched their little button noses and they giggled.
"I've got a little surprise for you in the playroom. Who's going to get there first?" She asked and the two girls screamed 'Me!!!' at the same time and ran to the playroom. She watched them run along the hallway together giggling as their laughter resonated around the house. Amelia signalled to a staff to follow them so she could supervise them.
"Oh Amelia! You spoil them too much!"
Xavier's aunt said as she hugged Amelia briefly. Amelia shrugged.
"That's literally my job! Hi Kyle!" She said as she waved but he hid his face in his mother's shirt, he was wearing dark shorts and a summer shirt and he looked like he was ready to hit the beach.
Lucy looked around for her nephew Xavier and turned to Amelia with a small frown.
"I could have sworn Xavier said he'd be around today. Where did he go? I called him a while ago and told him I was coming over with the kids and he said the two of you would be elated to have them over for the weekend."
"Oh he just left earlier. For a doctor's appointment."
Amelia said with a small smile and Lucy became more concerned as Amelia led her to the closest seat.
"Is there something wrong with him? Is everything okay?"
Amelia nodded.
"Oh I assure you everything is fine with Xavier. It's Daphne's doctor's appointment."
Now Xavier's aunt looked even more confused as she passed her son Kyle in her arms to one of the staffs who took him to the playroom. Amelia waved at Kyle as he was being carted away to the playroom before turning to his mother who moved closer to Amelia.
"Amelia, whats going on? Why is Xavier attending Daphne's doctor's appointment."
"Because she's now pregnant with his baby."
"What?!!!!"
She screamed and Amelia smiled tightly. She wondered why Xavier didn't break the news to his aunt himself. She would have certainly had fun with seeing how uncomfortable he would have been while breaking the news to her. Especially when explaining the circumstances around the pregnancy.
"Come Aunt Lucy, let me make you a strong drink while I explain what exactly happened."
Amelia said as she led Xavier's bewildered Aunt to the bar. At the bar while she mixed a strawberry limeade for Aunt Lucy who didn't want an alcoholic drink, she also made something a little stronger for herself as she explained the story of how Daphne managed to get pregnant after drugging and forcing herself on Xavier.
She already had the simple syrup, strawberries, mint leaves and lime juice ready as she already requested for them earlier when Xavier informed her that his aunt and her kids were coming over.
After mixing ice cubes with the strawberry limeade she poured it in a pretty rimmed glass and added a few mint leaves.
"I can't believe all this happened and Xavier didn't tell me about it."
Amelia shrugged as she reached out for a bottle of bourbon. She was going to make herself a little drink too.
"I guess he was waiting for a right time or something."
"And you? How are you taking all this? I understand you must be angry about all this."
Amelia shrugged.
"Sometimes I feel very angry about all of it. Sometimes I'm just pissed off and all. It hurts thinking that he's going to be sharing all the special moments he's supposed to be having when we're having a baby with her."
Lucy reached out for Amelia's hands and squeezed it lightly.
"I can only imagine what you two would be going through. Especially Xavier. I know he always wanted kids but not this way..."
"Well, he seems to be taking it pretty well." Amelia said as she rolled her eyes.
"Oh Amelia, don't think about it that way. He's probably just thinking about the baby. I hope it's kept on a low though, the mess that's going to come after all this would be terrible."
Amelia nodded.
"Yes, Daphne signed an agreement with Xavier. She agreed to keep it all confidential. The press has been sniffing around a lot but Xavier has been paying a lot of people to keep quiet about it."
Amelia said as she remembered when Xavier told her he had to pay a lot of money to a photographer who managed to take a picture of him and Daphne together. He and Daphne had to avoid the public scene for as long as possible because if the Press started to think there was something going on between them they would insinuate that Xavier was cheating on Amelia.
"I feel bad all this is happening to you both. Really!"
"We're going to be fine."
Amelia said as she raised her glass of cocktail to her lips.
Were they really going to be fine? She asked as she took a sip of her drink. Well, she hoped they were going to be fine.
Xavier and Daphne stood inches apart as the doctor called them into his office after a few moments of waiting in the waiting room.
He had been with her all through all her various checkups. They had both met up at the hospital's parking lot in separate cars as they walked to the hospital together. Xavier had also cleared his while schedule for the appointment although he really wished they could finish up earlier than planned. He knew Amelia had agreed that they postpone their romantic getaway but it didn't stop him from feeling horrible about it.
Xavier was pleased to finally see Daphne's doctor after almost fifteen minutes of waiting. Doctor Mark Gilman looked like a man that was well approaching his fifties.
His movements were unhurried, choreographed and deliberate. His voice was as deep and he spoke without the medical jargon Xavier hated. For the most part he understood what was going on and periodically he would stop to address them directly, to explain a lot of things and what needed to be done. Xavier made it clear to the doctor that he and Daphne were in no way romantically involved and Daphne frowned slightly at the addition.
Doctor Mark Gilman then led them to the ultrasound exam room, where they were going to be able to see the baby on the monitor and check if everything was okay.
Daphne had been asked to take a lot of fluids before the procedure and Doctor Mark Gilman asked her if she was prepared for the examination as Xavier helped her on the bed. She had worn a two piece especially for the occasion and Xavier looked away for a while as she pulled up her yellow top so the doctor could assess her properly.
Xavier stood rigid close to her while the nurse and Doctor had a little chat before beginning.
"Hold my hand." Daphne whispered to Xavier and he looked at her incredulously. She raised her hand up to his and he took it reluctantly. Her hand was cold and Xavier was mildly shocked by how warm his hand was against her ice cold hand.
He smiled tightly as the doctor studied them wearily.
A warm gel was spread on her belly and the transducer probe was placed on her belly. Xavier and Daphne both focused on the monitor eagerly as the black and grainy monitor came alive.
After a while of probing, the doctor pointed to a dot on the screen that was roughly the size of a cherry. Xavier was sceptical, how could something so small actually be a baby? He asked himself as the doctor started talking to Daphne eagerly about how the baby was at the normal size.
"And that's your baby. Would you like to hear the heartbeat?"
He asked and Daphne's eyes widened into a smile. Xavier was still looking on at the little dot in shock till the sound of a strong heartbeat filled the room and they both smiled.
"Awwwwn. He's perfect!" Daphne cooed as she squeezed Xavier's hand. Xavier was quiet, way too quiet. It was a lot to take in and he didn't know how to act. All he knew was that the life beating inside Daphne was his and the least he could do was to love and protect the baby. No matter what. There was a small stirring in his chest and Xavier quickly ignored it as he looked away from the UltraSound's monitor.
"Oh! Can we get a copy after this? I really can't wait."
Daphne said and the doctor nodded.
"Absolutely."
"What about my due date Doctor? When am I due?" She asked and the Doctor nodded and looked at the sonogram again.
"April the seventeenth."
He said and Daphne smiled again as she gazed into Xavier's eyes. She was practically beaming with happiness clearly written in her features.
"Oh! I can't wait!"
She said in excitement as she started wiping off the gel from her belly. Xavier stood transfixed to the spot. April the seventeenth. It was very close to Amelia's birthday. In fact, it was just a few days away from her birthday.
"Xavier! Are you okay?"
Daphne asked and Xavier nodded slowly.
"Yes, I am."
Back in the doctor's office, Xavier was deep in thoughts while the doctor retrieved the rest of the test results that Daphne had done for the day. While they both waited, she had chatted away about her plans for names, what she planned on doing when they had the baby and every possible thing she could talk about. Xavier was really relieved when Doctor Gilman walked back in.
He had a mild frown on his face as he checked the files in his hands.
"I just got the results from your tests back Mrs Steele and I just noticed quite a few things."
"What's that?"
Daphne asked with a nervous laughter and the Doctor shrugged.
"It says here that you have a very unusually high blood pressure which makes your pregnancy very high risk."
Xavier raised his eyebrows.
"What does that mean?"
The doctor shrugged.
"It means that they're potential complications that could affect the mother, baby or in some cases both."
Daphne put a hand to her mouth.
"What do you mean doctor? What do I do now?"
She asked with growing worry as the doctor nodded.
"What I mean is, if your blood pressure doesn't go down, it can cause potential risk in your pregnancy which can be very harmful to you and your baby."
"Of course with a proper diet, exercises and several trips to visit the doctor it can be managed. If you also take your pregnancy supplements that would help."
The doctor added but Daphne was still shaken
"I would like to monitor you closely, you might have to come back in the next ten days for another checkup, just to make sure everything is okay."
After a few other discussions with the doctor, Xavier and a very shaken Daphne left the hospital.
"Are you okay?"
Xavier finally asked as he escorted Daphne to her car.
She looked at him with big scared eyes and a worried expression
"How do you expect me to be okay after hearing that news? Something terrible could happen to me or the baby!"
Xavier flinched.
"That's not exactly what he said..."
"Then what did he say?" She snapped.
"What the hell did you think he said? There can be something serious going on with me or my baby and I don't want that! I just want a healthy pregnancy."
"Well, luckily, the doctor already told you how to achieve that."
"How? How am I going to achieve that when I'm practically doing all this myself? With little or no help from you!"
Xavier was taken aback with Daphne's statement
"What do you mean? I came with you to the doctor's appointment. I'm doing everything I can."
"You know it's not enough. And you're just treating me this way because you don't like me. You're really going to make your baby suffer because of the blinding hate you have for me."
Daphne spat out with tears in her eyes as she pushed him away and got into her car.
She drove sway without as much as a second glance.
