Chapter 26.
"Xavier, we need to talk..."
Amelia said as she held on to Xavier's arm while he picked out a shirt from the closet. He turned to look at her with a small frown before dropping the shirt.
"Are you okay?"
He asked with concern and she nodded. He walked up to her and cupped her face lovingly, he planted a kiss on her forehead and rubbed her cheeks tenderly.
"Yes, will you come downstairs please?"
She asked as she pulled him away from her slowly.
Xavier chuckled.
"Is this about me travelling to Denver? You know you can always come with me if you want "
Amelia shook her head as she smiled.
"No, it's not about that. This is something else. This is something serious."
"Will you meet me downstairs at the dining table please?"
She asked as she unhooked her arm from his and started walking away. Xavier's face contorted in confusion as he wondered about what was going on.
Amelia had been doing a lot the past few days, trying to uncover the DNA test scandal was proving harder than she expected especially since she didn't want to draw Daphne's suspicion. She was sniffing around, but she didn't want to be caught.
Lorenzo was also trying to help and he claimed that he was keeping tabs on Daphne so he could figure our her next move.
So far, Millie was the only one who had been able to give her concrete and tangible proof of Daphne doings. She was the one who showed Daphne the test centre, she told Daphne things about them and she even told Daphne that Amelia was pregnant.
So far, Daphne suspected nothing and she still thought that Millie was working for her. She was even more focused on what Amelia was doing and her schedule. Amelia ensured that Millie was recording all their conversations.
Millie was already waiting for her in the dining room with her phone in her sweaty hands. She watched closely as Amelia and Xavier approached her. Xavier looked confused as he stared at the two of them. What could be going on?
He asked himself as he raised his eyebrows.
"Sit Xavier. We have important things to talk about."
Amelia said as she pointed to the chair right across Millie and sat down next to him
"What's going on?"
Xavier asked and he glanced at Amelia who pointed to Millie.
"Listen to what she has to say."
Millie appeared to be trembling as she played with her fingers underneath the table. She looked terrified, she was not only afraid of losing her job, she was also scared that her actions could make sure that she served jail time.
"Why is Millie here?"
Millie looked up slowly with a small but scared smile.
"Mr Xavier... I'm so sorry..."
"For?" Xavier asked and Millie went quiet for a while before Amelia sighed.
"Millie here, has been a spy for Daphne for quite a while."
"She has not only being providing information for her in exchange for money, but she has also helped Daphne achieve a few things."
"What?"
"Exactly what you heard Xavier. And every bit of it is true."
Amelia said as she patted his shoulder while Millie slowly raised her eyes.
"It's true Mr Black. I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to..."
"Wait! What exactly has she been doing?"
Xavier asked with rage in his voice as he glared at Millie. He was at a loss for words and he was trying very hard to process every single thing that was happening.
"Well, let's see, she informed Daphne about the DNA test centre, she was also the one that let Daphne in the night Nana died, she helped Daphne leak that disgusting article you thought I wrote and well, let's just say Millie here basically told her everything about our life."
Amelia said as she shrugged.
"Why would you do such a thing? You're on of my oldest staff! I've treated you like family!"
Xavier shouted and Millie cowered under the sound of his voice.
"What the hell is she still doing here?"
Xavier asked and Amelia held husband's shoulder to calm him down.
"Calm down, we need her?"
"How???!!"
"Well, right now she's our only connection to Daphne. She is the only one that we can use to get through Daphne."
"Ugh!" Xavier groaned.
"We don't need that! We just need another DNA test and then we'll kick Daphne away from our lives and then we can finally be happy!"
Xavier said and Amelia shook her head.
"Daphne is cunning and smart and fucking sleazy! If we let her know we're on to her, who knows what she's going to do."
Xavier groaned.
"There's literally nothing she can do! We have the law on our side."
Amelia nodded.
"Yes, but Daphne likes to play dirty. This is a woman that drugged you just so she could sleep with you. I wouldn't put anything past her."
"Besides, there's more."
Amelia said as she turned to Millie who dropped off an envelope on the dinning table, alongside a phone.
"What else?"
Xavier asked with a hint of annoyance in his voice. He always knew Daphne was sinister, but he never expected so much from her.
"This."
Millie said as she played the voice recording.
It was a conversation between Daphne and Millie. Daphne was agreeing to pay Millie two thousand dollars if she carried out a job, but what the job was she didn't specify, but Daphne seemed pretty serious about it. Serious and urgent, like she wanted it done right away.
"What job is she talking about?"
Millie sighed as she finally looked up to meet Xavier's blue eyes.
"She wanted me to give Mrs Amelia abortion pills."
"What??!!!"
"I refused the first time she offered me money to do so, but she became very persistent and when Mrs Amelia learned that was her plan, she told me to pretend like I was going to accept."
"Amelia, we need to call in the police."
Xavier said and Amelia nodded.
"Relax, we will, but we need to have enough proof to nail her first. What are we going to charge her for? She can easily dismiss the words of Millie if she has a good legal team."
"What do you suggest we do then? We can't keep waiting till she makes a move!"
Amelia shrugged.
"That's why I involved you, we need a private investigator, a very good one."
"What for?"
Amelia sighed.
"We need someone to uncover everything she has done. Someone really good. We need tangible proof that she did these things Xavier."
Xavier nodded.
"You're right. So much could go wrong if we try and build a case on this. But with everything you just told me, it sounds like she's becoming more of a ticking bomb. We don't know what she can do next."
Amelia nodded as she rested in her chair while massaging her temple.
"I know. You're right."
"You need adequate protection. I don't trust that woman."
Xavier said as he pulled out his phone.
Amelia squinted her eyes at his screen, he seemed to be typing furiously.
"What are you doing?"
Xavier shrugged.
"I'm requesting for a full security team for you. I know you don't like the entourage and all. But I won't let you leave the house unprotected."
Xavier said and something about the statement warmed Amelia's heart even when she felt it was totally unnecessary.
"Hmmmm. I don't think that's necessary..."
She murmured but he ignored her statement.
He looked up at Millie.
"Are you willing to cooperate with us?"
He asked as he frowned at her with disgust and she nodded her head eagerly.
"Yes! Yes I am."
"Good. I'll be hiring a private investigator and contacting our legal team soon. We need to think of the best ways to tackle this problem."
"What about your trip to Denver?"
Amelia asked as she raised her eyebrow. Xavier stared at her incredulously like he expected her to know the answer to the question.
"Cancelled."
She had been tailing Lorenzo's car for the past few minutes and it was making her uneasy. Especially when she became increasingly suspicious that he was up to something. Her gut instincts had been flaring up a lot lately and she knew it wasn't due to nausea or her pregnancy. Something was wrong, or something was going to be wrong. She could feel it all around her.
It started when Millie the housekeeper had seemed a little too keen to accept the offer. She also seemed a little pressed for details, something Daphne was sure Millie would never do. If there was something she had come to understand about Millie, it was the less information for her the better. That was what she liked.
That was when she had been thinking and rethinking every of her actions and her decisions. She had found a way to handle Millie though. She would soon dispose of her when the forty eight hour time frame she had given her would be up.
It was the only way she could ensure Millie would never become a problem in the future.
She watched Lorenzo park in front of a Starbucks that was almost a mile away from his place. He walked in casually, almost as if he didn't expect anyone to be following him. Daphne was almost tempted to give up. She had been wondering why she even followed her gut instincts in the first place and followed him.
It looked like he was up to nothing or just his usual shenanigans. She thought as she watched from across the street, she could hardly see anything from afar. And the the fact that her car was parked on the far end of the street where the Starbucks was made it even much more worse.
She looked up at her phone again. Still no call from Xavier. Not even after her message. Of course, it was not unusual for Xavier to ignore her calls and messages but Xavier never ignored anything that was baby related. Anything that had to do with the baby, he always replied as soon as possible.
She had reminded him about her doctor's appointment and he didn't even text back.
"Something is definitely wrong."
She murmured as she looked at her phone again.
After thirty minutes of what seemed to be endless and futile waiting, Daphne was about to give up and leave when she spotted Lorenzo walking out with someone next to him.
"Oh fuck!" Daphne whispered as she spotted Amelia walking out with Lorenzo next to her. She was in a orange fitted dress and heels and her hair looked shorter than Daphne remembered. Lorenzo was walking next to her and there were two men in black suits walking with Amelia.
"How is it possible?"
She asked herself as she fumbled with her phone.
Seeing Amelia with the true father of her baby could only mean one thing, Amelia knew the truth.
Possibly Xavier too...
