Showed up late
After a whole day in Wolfcity’s library, reading through all the “informative” letters from former Alphas, Logan needed a breather. The archived room smelt of rotting paper, dust, and stale air. Lexi had quit several hours earlier, opting to cart the boxes up the stairs to the reading area, leaving him to sort through the many documents. The time lying on the comforter in his office was a luxury.
“Lexi says you haven’t found anything of value”
“Yet. I’m still holding out hope for one of those boxes. Have you begun speaking to the refugees yet?”
“Twelve out of the twenty-two. I have gotten everything I can from them, personal info, and what they know about our werewolf hunter.
“Doesn’t ring a bell,” Logan said gruffly. “Tell Lexi, Aspen, and Frasier that we’ll have a meeting in twenty, at the library.”
“Are you worried a little friend of yours will interrupt?” Bruce teased.
“I’m no friend of hers Bruce, and I would like it if you bothered someone else, like Aspen.”
“Aspen’s been busy, she’s been training Sam and Emily.”
“Who forced Emily into that arrangement-“
A man walked into the office, worry on his face. Logan sat all signs of humor wiped from his face.
“what has happened?”
“It’s Miss Emily,” the bloke said. “She’s left wolfcity.”

Rabid’s voice grew louder as he strained on his leash. Emily tried to calculate how much she would have to run to reach the cafe. Would they be able to catch up with her before she neared other people?
The ghouls sniggered. And fanned out. They were trying to corner her. Rabid pulled hard on his leash. A burly man walked towards her humming to himself, blissfully unaware of the danger she was in. As he noticed her, his humming faltered and his expression shifted to concern.
“Is there a problem, miss?” he asked. She remembered that humans couldn’t see the ghouls, and before she could warn him, one of the monsters jumped on him, and with its mouth unhinged, took a bite out of his neck. He let out an agonizing scream as blood burst from his neck, covering the ground and Emily in it. with a horrified gasp, she dropped Rabid’s leash and felt around for her blade. running was no longer an option.
As she reached for it, the second ghoul pounced intent on her death. But before he could take more steps towards her, Rabid intercepted its attack. She saw the surprise on the ghoul's face as the dog’s fangs latched onto his neck shaking him around like a chew toy.
The first ghoul dropped the man’s lifeless body and turned its hungry eyes on Rabid. He pulled the leash around his neck, pulling it along till it choked Rabid. With a cry, Emily jumped on the ghoul's back, all thoughts of her safety gone.
In a frenzied haste, she thrust her blade in the ghoul's neck repeatedly, in a desperate bid to protect the dog. Yet, the creature remained relentless and drove her back into the brick wall of the alley. She felt the pain of her head connecting with concrete and slipped to the ground, just as Rabid launched himself at the offending ghoul.
On the cusp of unconsciousness, a familiar voice pierced the din, clear and full of barely contained rage. As she succumbed to the darkness, she felt hopeful and safe in the knowledge that Logan had arrived and would protect them.
Logan felt like he had died when he saw Emily drop to the ground, covered in blood. The ghouls had killed her. it was Stacy all over again. He always showed up too late. With anger spurring him on, he ended the ghouls who were considerably injured but managed to remain animated.
Shortly after, three bodies lay about him. He ignored the bodies, knowing the ghouls would vaporize, and rushed to Emily’s side. Rapid was there already nudging her limp head with his nozzle. Trepidation filled him as he checked for her pulse. He was relieved to find it, soft and rhythmic. She was okay, and he had Rabid to thank for it. he lightly caressed the dog’s head.
“We need to leave before Finn sends his reinforcements,” Bruce said urgently.
“We have a problem,” Frasier said grimly. His eyes were focused on where the bodies vaporized, Loga followed them, as did Bruce. Two of the corpses were practically nonexistent, but one remained. Bruce swore under his breath.
“it’s human.” Frasier confirmed. “we have to get rid of it.”
“We don’t have the time. We need to leave NOW.”
Both men looked at Logan to make the final decision. A look at the bloodied Emily made his mind up for him. Quickly he picked her up and rushed to the car that was parked near the café. Ignoring the stares and gasps of the few people who looked on they drove back to Wolf City, mentally preparing for the repercussions of his choice.
