Chapter 60: OUR NEW HOME
Alpha Dylan
The drive was kind of slow.
And despite the rather sluggish pace of our journey, I found comfort in the fact that reaching our destination was something that was inevitable, regardless of how fast or slow we traveled.
The road stretched out before us, winding its way through the landscape that was adorned with tall green trees and the sound of the wind around us.
As I stared outside the tinted glass windows, i realized then that in the far distant the sun had already begin to set. The gloaming colored the sky in the subtle shades of orange and pink.
Drake rode past the highway, bringing us closer and closer to home.
I suddenly began to wonder just what awaited my mate and I there.
I turned to my mate.
But Ellen was asleep beside me.
She had fallen asleep few moments earlier. I had only noticed, drawn from my thoughts when her grip around my palms had loosened considerably because she had not fully let go of my hands, even till now.
I turned to stare at her quiet sleeping form.
Her eyes were shut loosely as she slept, with her long dark eye lashes resting against her fair cheeks. Her lips were slightly parted. It was an action that allowed her to make cute noises in her sleep, the sound of very soft snores.
I smiled at the serenity that seemed to envelope her in the silence. Her peaceful expression was a stark contrast to the world that was bustling outside the car windows.
Her dark curly hair was untied behind her head, framing her face. It was not like she always did, mayhap the hair tie that she had used had come loose as she slept.
She looked like an angel sleeping so peacefully like that.
Drake stepped on the brakes too quick, causing both of us to jolt. She lurched forward in her sleep and I guarded her body with my hands, but she did not fall or even awaken.
Her wild hair had taken the opportunity to grow even wilder, veiling more than half of her pretty face. As the black curly strands shook around her, they glistened against the paleness of her skin.
My wolf growled low inside of me as I remembered marking her there. If I were to raise her hair away from her neck, my mark would be there waiting to see me, as glaring as the daylight.
She was beautiful.
I adjusted her position gently, tenderly, like a lover which i was.
I was her lover.
I could still not believe the fact that I had a mate. I could still not believe the fact that I had finally found her. Everything had happened so quickly I realized now. It had been so fast, so swift for me that I was only now processing and fully comprehending the entire situation.
I had a mate.
I have had her for more than twenty four hours, more than a day.
I should have told my mother, but I did not and that was why I was a bit scared of her and what she would do.
I remembered my conversations with my aunt this morning while Ellen was still having her breakfast.
I remember the words she had said to me when I followed her out.
"What will happen now? Your mother, she would not easily accept your mate Dylan," she had said to me. "She is kind of stuck on that Stephanie girl that she has been making in to the perfect Luna."
"Ellen is my mate. I will let her know so once I am home."
"What if she counters you, like she did to Lydia and Sarah?"
"But Ellen is really my mate," I had emphasized.
"As if Sarah and Lydia are not truly mates. But look what she did," she had said with a tsk sound.
I knew about it.
My mother had said that Lydia and Sarah could not be mates. She had almost very nearly ruined those two.
It had taken a lot to stop her obsessing over those two.
"I will let her know that the moon goddess had shown me mercy and finally brought my mate to me. She would not call me a liar."
"Well," Karen and said with a shrug. "I definitely hope so. Go well my boy and do take care of your mate." Then she had embraced me.
"I will Karen."
And now here I was thinking about the same thing, with some sort of reality dawning onto me.
Karen knew what my mother was like.
I also knew what my mother was like.
"The borders," Drake murmured as we approached the Kane pack border lines.
The moment we crossed over the borders into the Kane pack, i kind of froze with dread and fright.
Fear and anticipation became my companion.
It was the fear of the unknown and the anticipation of the worst things.
Those emotions, I felt them deep down inside of me, my soul, alive in my stomach, clawing desperately at my organs and then moving, crawling up my lungs and throat in a mortifying way, leaving its bitter after taste on my tongue.
Dread danced around inside of my head as I thought of how to face my mother after running off.
I thought of how to face my mother with my newly found mate.
As I thought of this, I reached for Ellen's palm again across the seat and held them in mine. They were warm against mine that was cold with fear and anticipation.
My mother, she would be shocked once she received the news, I knew. But she would quickly get over it.
And then would come the main problem, the one that has now let my heart beating like an abandoned baby inside of my chest.
She would intentionally make things difficult for my mate and I. And Ellen, she was a rather fragile woman.
"We are approaching the palace Alpha," Drake said to me, drawing me from my thoughts. I nodded as our eyes met in the rear view mirror.
My heart began to beat again, but when I turned to my resting mate, her presence brought a sense of calm to me amidst the impending storm of facing my mother.
"It will be alright," I said out loud to nobody but myself. I was reassuring myself that nothing would go wrong.
"Yes Alpha," Drake answered. I did not need him to do that.
Yet, the road ahead seemed to stretch out endlessly before me, simply mirroring the uncertainties that awaited me.
As we approached the palace, a sense of unease settled in the pit of my stomach and the weight of my mother's anticipated disapproval loomed heavy in my thoughts, quickly overshadowing the joy of finding my mate. I knew her tendency to make things difficult for those who she deemed unworthy.
My grip on Ellen's hand tightened considerably as I stabilized my self with her sweet fragrance.
"We are here Alpha," Drake informed me as he parked the car. I gathered myself for a while.
It had taken me so long to find my mate and nothing, absolutely nothing would go wrong and spoil my chances of happiness with her.
My mother inclusive.
So I told myself that I was the Alpha and my mother was not.
I had a say.
Drake held the door open for me. I stepped out then went to the other side. I opened and lifted Ellen into my hands.
She did not awaken, rather she melted into me comfortably. I smiled as her took her inside, to our new home.
