11. Saving the Enemy

“What?” Brianna was startled.

What just happened? She was so confused, but she hurriedly followed as she could see him getting off the car. It was a busy street, and as a luxury car, pulling over on the side of the road was too eye-catching. People were even murmuring, asking if this is a movie scene shooting they were watching right at the moment. Brianna swiftly got off the car, and before Lucien could reach her side, she was already out of it, standing next to the door, sight following her boss’ every step towards her.

She was looking right at him when she suddenly jumped. And at full tilt, she grabbed him and jumped with him in her holds towards the pedway. Then a loud crashing sound came after it…

“Fuck!” She couldn’t help cursing. She almost got hit by that car, saving him. Saving her enemy’s grandson. She was almost crying as disappointment and frustration overwhelmed her. She was in the havoc of emotional turmoil. Asking herself. Why didn’t she let him get hit? Why did she have to save him? Why?! Why?! And why?!

“Damn it!” She held her face with both hands, suppressing her sounds of whimpers. She looked scared and shocked in Lucien’s understanding that he couldn’t help himself comforting her in a warm embrace. “Shhhhhhh… It’s okay. It’s okay. We’re fine.” Lucien, who was still a bit shocked, came back to his senses when he saw another car collide with his favorite ride, not to mention, luxury car. He was about to confront the other driver when he noticed her sobbing, or at least that was what he saw in her. He realized she just saved him! The car issue could wait. And he needed not worry about it in any way. He had to express gratitude to the one who saved him.

And that is his secretary for the day, Brianna Peters. He checked on her.

What he said made her feel even more miserable. She almost wailed and bawled. She bit her lips even harder, trying to hold his tongue from cursing him directly. He was too close. He would definitely hear her even for a whisper.

“Are you hurt?” He felt even more flustered.

But she kept her hands in her face. She was silently crying. She was too regretful of her quick response and speed, which had been very useful in all her life. Today, they failed her! Her body was quicker to react to the situation that her eyes had caught even just the slightest glimpse of it. She knew danger was on its way, and without even thinking, her reflexes moved as if they had a mind of their own. She felt so sorry for her parents. They must be so disappointed with her. Although she saved a life, she saved a life of whom she was not supposed to. She had never felt such failure drown her in all her life. She was feeling so devastated. As if all strength left her, she fainted. She fainted due to severe and beyond dreadful, agonizing heartache.

“Brianna Peters! Brianna!” Lucien panicked when she fell into his arms, almost lifeless. He was alarmed. He looked around to see if he could ask for their help.

“Somebody call the medics!”

He laid her down flat on the ground. He checked if she was breathing fine. Much to his relief, she was peacefully breathing. She must have been shocked. He checked for his phone in his pocket. He was freaked out with how fast everything had happened that he forgot. He can call for medics himself. He pressed a speed dial, and the line quickly got connected.

“Vicky, listen to me very, very carefully.” Vicky felt something different. But as always, she never asks unnecessary questions. Her boss will tell her if she had to know. So she just answered accordingly.

“Yes, sir.” “Ask someone to investigate what happened on the main road just a few minutes ago.” He clenched his jaw as he spoke. He still cannot imagine what would have happened if Brianna was not quick to jump at him. It was obvious. He was walking around the front hood of the car when another car collided with it. He was the target of whoever did this intentionally. And Brianna, whom he was too annoyed with a while ago for ignoring his presence, saved him.
Then he called for his security. A team which as much as possible he did not want to be shadowing him, but he swears that from today onwards he is going to make sure nothing like this would ever happen.
"Send a few cars to get me out of here," Lucien firmly ordered. He felt like he was too vulnerable in his location right now, not to mention Brianna has fainted. Anyone who would walk directly to his position will no doubt get the chance to shoot him without difficulty. He just realized how stupid his stubbornness to have security and personal bodyguards in his close circumference could be very useful right now. He was not sure if he should be thankful that there were a lot of passers-by in the area. They can be of help to him but at the same time, any one of them can be among those who wanted to hurt him. These kinds of assassinations are not done by a single person, some of them are the backup to finish the task.
"Hurry up," he barked over the phone. He was panicked and for the very first time, he felt helpless.
But before he could even press the red button on his phone to cut the call. A few cars stopped surrounding them. Two black SUVs and a medic's car with a stretcher bed for the patient.
Lucien's men moved swiftly. And when they got in the car, Brianna was quickly assisted to breathe with oxygen in a tank.
"I hope you did not break any traffic lights on your way here," Lucien gratefully mentioned.
"We were right behind you," the man answered.
Lucien shook his head. He was so relieved he was able to give in a breathy laugh.
"My old man's orders, right?" Lucien asked.
"Yes, sir," the man politely answered.
