14. Possessiveness
Clark shook his head in disbelief. She still had the title of his profession on his name when Nana called his name.
Lucien was faintly smiling at the two. Nanna never changes, just like Clark never giving up. This conversation had happened many, many times before, but the results never seemed to change. He got into the room first, and he was astonished to see Brianna in his white shirt. It was definitely a different sight from how she looked earlier. It warms his heart that she looked so divine and serene in white, plus the fact that it was his shirt. He walked briskly to reach her bed faster than Clark and made sure the duvet neatly covered her.
Nanna and Clark, who noticed him walking briskly, thought something happened, so their gaze followed him with a worried look. Clark blinked his eyes in disbelief, seeing Lucien so cautiously covering the lady on the bed with the duvet. Clark gave Nanna a questioning look. His eyes bulging in astonishment. But the old lady just shrugged her shoulders. She was stunned as well as the young doctor, but she could hide to show that she was happier knowing Lucien was really more than just simply concerned.
Clark wanted to ask, but his voice seemed to have left him, so he gave Nana a questioning look instead. But he was replied with raised eyebrows as if saying, "I don't have any idea what you're asking?"
He was gobsmacked. He didn't know what to say to Lucien's obvious possessiveness, but he was completely speechless at the old lady's denials. Because that was what he thought, Nana was just not telling him, but he felt she knew something.
Nanna gave him a look that clearly reprimands him about saying anything.
"Doctor Clark, please do what you have to do now." Nanna reminded him. Lucien had his back on them. He didn't see the exchange of looks between his Nana and Clark Jacobs.
Hearing the old lady's voice reminded Lucien he had to move over and give way for the doctor to do his job. He moved to sit on the bedside above Brianna's head. He wanted to be able to comfort her in case the same thing earlier happens again. His actions overwhelm Clark. He was acting very strange compared to his usual character. Clark Jacobs moved to get closer to the patient lying on the bed.
"Is she...?" Clark Jacobs looked at Nana then to Lucien. He was mesmerized to see a black raven-haired woman looking so serene in her sleep. Her delicate featured face was even more emphasized by her curly hair spread all over above her head. He couldn't help staring at the beauty sleeping so peacefully on the bed.
"What? Do you know her?" Asked Lucien. He was also anxious seeing his friend's reaction when he saw Brianna.
Lucien's voice awakened Clark. He felt scared at the eagerness he could sense in his friend's questions. He cleared his throat and took a deep breath before he answered.
"Sorry, bro. I just thought I saw her, maybe among my patients. But I can't be sure," Clark smiled awkwardly. Hoping Lucien would not notice, he was just making his answer up. He cannot be honest to say. He was mesmerized by the beauty he saw peacefully lying on the bed. He cannot dare if he doesn't want Lucien to ban him from coming over here and seeing her maybe for all his life.
Lucien has possessiveness in him. Lucien himself may not be aware of it, but being his long-time friend, Clark knew his personality very well, sometimes more than the person himself. It is by nature that when you are too close to a picture, you might overlook parts of it. And Lucien being the one involved, cannot even notice he is being overprotective.
What Clark said made sense as to Lucien's understanding. His friend is a physician. It may not be too impossible for Brianna to have had a visit at the hospital, considering she may also have some medical conditions.
"May I?" Clark hesitatingly asked Lucien if he could continue with what he was supposed to do.
"Go ahead," Lucien answered. He moved closer to Brianna to give some space for Clark to stand by her side. But when Clark was about to use the stethoscope to check her heartbeat, his eyes flew to Lucien.
"I,.." Clark scratched his head. "Man, I need to do this," Clark complained. He looked pitiable with frowning eyebrows and almost about to cry face. His hand was halfway to reach the patient, but as he can see Lucien's sharp gaze, he could feel his wrist shaking.
"Just tell me where," Lucien swiftly grabbed the other end of the stethoscope, which needed to touch the patient to check the heartbeat.
Clark Jacobs was so flabbergasted at Lucien's actions that he froze for a good minute with his mouth slightly opened. He looked around to check if Nana was seeing all of these. But what he saw made him looked even more comical. His eyes were bulging in disbelief as he clearly saw the old lady winked at him before pretending to walk towards the window. The wind seemed to blow a bit stronger than earlier, so the old lady was going to close it half. Let only enough wind through.
"Don't just stand there," Lucien, who was waiting for Clark's direction, was a bit annoyed when he looked beside him and saw Clark motionless. He did not see the doctor's face as he was looking at the old lady who was then walking towards the window. Clark was feeling like he was being bullied by these two. Lucien and Nana Freya. They are joining forces against him. He feels so aggrieved. But he had to prioritize the patient.
"Yes, sir," Clark answered sarcastically. Earning another sharp glance from Lucien. He pouted as he held Lucien's hand to where he needs to place the flat surface of the medical instrument. Lucien was very serious doing his part, while Clark was also very quiet as he listens to the sound of the patient's heartbeat. After he was convinced with what he has heard, he signaled Lucien to discuss the results far from the bed so as not to disturb the lady in her sleep.
A suggestion which Lucien didn't need a second invitation to comply. He softly touched Brianna's forehead as if checking if she had a fever, checked her covers as if they were crumpled - which in fact wasn't even touched, then with so much care not to make a noise. He walked away from the bed. Following his gaze towards where Clark headed after checking the patient. Still hesitating to leave the room.
Clark shook his head as he watched Lucien's every move from the door where he was already half out as he looked back to check when he noticed Lucien wasn't behind him.
Nana Freya looked like she wasn't going anywhere as she sat on the foot-end of the bed. She must be staying to assist the sleeping lady just in case she wakes up.
"I will look after her while you talk with Doctor Jacobs," Nana Freya urged Lucien.
And only then did Lucien walked towards the door.
