Chapter 105
“I don’t think this would be a good idea, mum. I have to make sure that you will be with me all the time,” Lexi said as Caroline was walking ahead of her. She knows that her master and lady would not be appreciating this if they found out their only daughter and heir were walking down on the market without any bodyguard.
And most of them all, Caroline was disguising herself as a maid!
“Oh, don’t be so dramatic, Lexi. And what did I tell you about calling me ‘mum’? I thought we’re friends of the same social status and we’re going shopping for groceries,” Caroline said as she was scanning the area.
If I have known that you would be dressing in my clothes, I would have not let you come with me, Lexi mused before she was sighing and closed her eyes for a moment. Then, when she opened her eyes, Caroline was gone.
“Caroline? Caroline? Caroline?!” Lexi shouted but of course, Lady Caroline Hurst was nowhere to be found.
I am so doomed, Lexi thought before she was walking around to get a sense of where her mistress has gone to.
I never seen anything like this before, Caroline thought before she was looking at the merchants and their stalls. They sell everything from spices to furniture. The night market was happening and Caroline wondered why she never left the building just to get a jest of all this.
“One fine necklace for the lady?”
“A carpet that would suit your room, my lady?”
“How about a dress that you would wear to a ball?”
The merchants were offering her their stuff before she was walking even further to get out of the marketplace. Caroline wanted to explore as much as she can that she knew the next time would never arrive in her footsteps.
More likely when her parents will be home tomorrow.
Caroline was walking even further down the road that she was oblivious to the gang of men that were following her from behind. It was said that women should not be wandering alone and with Lexi out of her reach, she was in all sort of danger.
The danger that can be inflicted on her by a gang of men if she was not careful.
Caroline was just walking down at the end of the market before she sensed that she was being followed. She turned around to check but there was no one. She shrugged before she continued for her exploration. Right now, she was standing in front of the last stall that was at the market street and the lamp was dim enough that anything notorious could happen.
“What do you like from my humble store, my lady?” the young woman said as Caroline was looking at her. She would be considered pretty if she lost the scarf that covered her hair and maybe changed into something much fancier than her brown rags, Caroline thought before she was looking at the trinkets that she sells.
“Hmm, these are very nice. Where do you get them?” Caroline asked the woman as she was looking at the table.
“I made them myself. I have a gift for creating trinkets,” she said as Caroline was drawn to the trinket that looked like a diamond. She picked one up and she was looking at it under the dim lighting.
“I would have this one then,” Caroline said before the young woman took the trinket, and then, she was speaking something strange.
‘Beware of your surrounding for you will be in danger but you will be saved by someone that you might never think ever existed,’ the young woman said before she blinked her eyes. Caroline was looking at her before she mumbled that it would be one Tellu.
“Thank you,” Caroline said before she was walking down the road and she realized that she has been lost and alone without Lexi by her side. What’s worse was that she was surrounded by a gang of thieves that were ready to attack her.
“I cannot believe I have to go through that,” Dan said as he was getting out of the marketplace that he wanted to explore on his own. The visit to the Royal Molftus has been eye-opening when the young queen Arabella was asking him to marry.
Like hell I would, Dan mused as he was traveling across the marketplace, seeing the vendors doing so well with their business. It has been a routine for Dan to visit his vendors as a commoner, not as the count since he knows that people might be pretending to be fine when they were not.
“Want to get a gift for your wife, good sir?”
“How about a new carpet for your bedchamber?”
“Spare some time to look at these new designs?”
The stalls were busy as well as the night market. Dan shook his head as he was making his way to the end of the marketplace before he saw something that should not be happening under his watch. But they did.
A young woman, who was wearing ragged clothes, was surrounded by a group of men that were smiling wickedly at her. She was afraid, Dan can see it in her eyes, but she put up a brave upfront.
Clever girl, he mused before he was waiting in the shadows as the young woman was backing up into an abandoned alley.
“Stay back,” her sweet voice penetrated the air as she was walking away from the men. They laughed before the leader was smirking at her.
“And why would we do that, sweetheart? We don’t want to miss our fun for tonight, isn’t that right boys?” the leader asked before the woman was trying to find another route to get away from the danger.
Something was stirring inside Dan when he was looking at the hopeless face of that young woman. She was afraid but she did not let it control her. Instead, she was trying to find another solution to her problem.
Instantly, she went away as the gang was following her. The demon inside Dan asked him to follow that young woman and make sure that she was doing fine.
“Get her!” the leader said before the thieves were after the young woman. Dan still stood between the shadows followed them before the young woman was cornered again.
“I told you, sweetheart, you don’t get to run away from me,” the leader said as he was moving toward her. The young woman was scared but she was glaring at the leader with all her might.
“I am not afraid of you,” she spat before the leader laughed.
“Of course you’re not. You will thank me later when I am done with you,” he said, leering at the young woman that made Dan’s demon wanted to lash out. And when the leader was finally able to grip her arm, Dan stepped out of the shadows as he was gripping the hand of that thief.
“I suggest you remove your hand if you want to keep it,” he said coolly before the woman behind him was breathing hard and the thief was looking at him.
“Get your own woman, dude,” the leader said before Dan chuckled lowly. Then, he released the man’s grip from the woman’s arm before he was towering the thief.
“And I suggest you make problem somewhere else but here we are,” Dan said before he did something that he never thought he would.
He punched the thief.
