Chapter 106
CAROLINE was shocked to know that someone was saving her. The stranger was a brunette and by the looks of it, he might be 6 feet 4 inches. But of course, Caroline was not focusing on that when there was a whole gang that this man should be handling.
“Watch out,” she shouted when the stranger released the leader that was attacking her. She was gripping the trinket that she bought at the last vendor before the man was attacking the other that was coming at her.
Caroline was anxious before she was standing still against the wall that she did not realize there was someone that was coming at her by her side. The man gripped her arm and she cried out, wanted to getaway. Hearing those screams, her stranger was coming at the man that was gripping her arm and knocked him out.
“Are you alright?” the man asked before Caroline was blinking her eyes at the young man. He has the most vivid green eyes that she saw in his life. His face was angular with chiseled jaws and full, kissable lips that Caroline could not help but thinking about kissing it.
What is wrong with me? She mused before she blinked her eyes and the man was looking over his shoulder at the mess that he made.
“We need to get out of here, now,” he said before he pulled Caroline and they went out of the alley before the man was leading her to the marketplace again.
“Seriously, what are you doing there alone without a chaperone? You might get hurt by them,” the man said as Caroline was looking at his towering figure. He has a nice body and she can see that his grip was strong.
Definitely, a man who knows how to fight. Her stomach twisted at that thought before she heard someone was calling her name.
“Caroline? Caroline! There you are,” the familiar voice was hitting her eardrum and before she could turn to look who was it, Lexi was hugging her like she never did before.
“I thought I lost you. Where have you been?” Lexi, her ladies maid asked her and before Caroline can search the voice that she needed to tell her, she felt the big hand slipped away from her.
“Caroline?” Lexi asked her before she was looking at her friend. She smiled before she turned to look at the stranger that saved her but he was nowhere to be found.
“My lady, is everything okay?” Lexi lowered her voice before Caroline was looking around for that brunette man. She did not thank him properly and to think that she missed that chance.
She did not even know his name!
“I have everything that we need for the dinner. We should go home now, my lady,” Lexi said before Caroline was looking at her. She turned around once more and she still cannot find that man. Caroline sighed before she turned to look at her ladies’ maid before she nodded.
“Let’s go home. I think I have done my part of this adventure that I wanted to do,” she said before the two of them were out of the marketplace and en route to the mansion.
“MY dear, you look so thin. Have you not been eating properly when we’re gone?” her mother, Lady Hurst was asking Caroline as she was hugging her mother when they have arrived from their trip abroad.
It was a good thing that she made it to the mansion before her parents arrived or they would be asking some questions that Caroline doesn’t want to. She smiled at her mother before she went to hug her father.
“I see that my daughter was getting thinner. What’s got into you? Are you sick, my child?” Lord Hurst said before Caroline was shaking her head to her parents. Lord and Lady Hurst exchanged glances before Caroline was smiling at them.
“Do not fret. I am well. I was just excited about you guys coming home and not to mention, the ball that you were planning to throw for my birthday,” Caroline said before Lord Hurst laughed and her mother was shaking her head.
“Is this what this is all about? You worried that we might match make you with someone on your birthday?” her father asked her before Caroline was narrowing her eyes to him.
“Well, if anything, I don’t want to get surprises, that’s all,” she mumbled before her mother was taking her hand and led her upstairs. The butler was giving something to Lord Hurst and they were talking as the ladies were making it to their rooms.
“Oh hush, my dear. Nothing will be a surprise and I will promise that your father and I have the best intention in our hearts. We just want you to explore your options a bit,” Lady Hurst said before Caroline was rolling her eyes at her mother.
“Do not roll your eyes at me, young lady. It is not proper for a Lady,” Lady Hurst said before Caroline was smiling at her mother.
“I am glad that you’re back. At least I am not lonely anymore,” Caroline said before her mother smiled.
“I am as well, my dear. We are as well,” her mother said before Caroline was retiring to her bedchamber as her mother kissed her on the cheeks and went to meet her husband. Caroline closed the door before she sighed.
I think I will never guess what they have in store for my birthday ball then, she mused before she was getting ready for bed then as Lexi was helping her out of her gown and changed into a nightgown.
“DID you find the information that I wanted from you?” Dan asked his butler before the old man was giving the papers that contained all the names for a Lady with Caroline as their first name.
“There are not much of Ladies from Gentry that has that name as well as from the peasants, my lord,” the butler said as Dan was scanning the names. There was only one person from the Gentry with Caroline as the first name.
Lady Caroline Hurst, a daughter of a merchant in Vyckos, Lord and Lady Hurst.
Dan tapped his fingers on the mahogany desk before he was scanning the names for peasants. It was none.
“Perhaps the maiden in question is the Lady from the gentry that went to disguise herself as a peasant, my lord?” the butler suggested before Dan was nodding at him.
“Keep digging,” he instructed his butler before the old man bowed to Dan and left him to his thought
So, you want to play dress-up, my lady? Dan mused before he was looking at the invitation that was coming from the Hurst. He smiled before he sipped on the blood-laced wine before Dan smiled.
So be it.
