Chapter 75
AFTER looking at some of the documents that were supposed to be helping them to overcome the riots that were happening around the island, Ian leaned back on the chair that he was sitting on when someone was rapping at the door of the courtroom. Tom and Ian turned to look at the servant that was carrying a missive. He bowed to both of them before walking toward Ian. Then, he presented the tray that was carrying the missive.
“A telegram for you, my lord,” he said as Ian took the envelope, and broke the seal that was his insignia, the silver griffin. He smiled slowly as he dismissed the servant. Tom was watching him carefully with his violet eyes.
“Well, it would seem that you are happy to receive a note from your lady, Kain,” he said as Ian was reading the missive that Emily told him she was going out to Molftus Market to get some supplies and purchases for their townhouse. Ian smiled as he knew that Emily was trying to redecorate the townhouse so that it would be comfy for them to stay as long as they needed when the Higher Court was in session. And Ian loved that his wife was spending some of his fortunes on making herself happy and comfortable. His inner Demon was pleased to hear that news. Ian folded the missive before turning to look at his best friend the earl.
“Well, what can I say? I have a wife that adores me and loves to say something in the notes when she’s doing something in my presence. I wish that you knew how that feels but, of course, you would rather be alone than have a bride, isn’t that right, Tom? I guess you never know,” Ian taunted him as Tom was glaring murderously at him.
He knew that the earl was trying to keep a tough exterior, but for all the careful walls that he erected around the public, Thomas Rambova was not who the commoners thought he was.
There were so many things that the commoners didn’t know about the Higher Court, especially their lords that had the seats there.
Tom shrugged. “What do I care? I don’t have to think about anything and worry about someone that was not important to me. And of course, there’s this issue of having heirs later on. I don’t think I am cut for that kind of thing yet,” he said before Ian smirked.
“Yet, that’s what you say. And I think we have had enough of this problem for one day. I want to get back to my wife’s loving arms, if you excuse me, Tom,” Ian said as he stood up from his chair, taking his coat, hat, and gloves before heading out of the courtroom. Tom mumbled under his breath but Ian caught what he was saying.
“I heard that, Tom,” he said, as he turned to look at the earl. He was glaring at Ian as the marquis was putting his gloves on.
“Well, it’s the truth,” Tom said, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “You’re addicted to your wife, Ian, just like Nick is. Addicted and cannot seem to be away from them for hours now,” the earl said as Ian smirked at his best friend. Then, he spread his arms wide.
“What can I say? Emmy is my mate and I will be damned if I cannot be with her as much as I could when the night is up,” he said before Tom coughed as Ian left the Stone Tower to go back to his townhouse where he knew that Emmy would be waiting for his return from the Higher Court.
ARABELLA was reading the missives that she got from all the spies that she planted all over the major towns and villages just to keep updated on what was going on around the country. And to think that the earl was thinking she was not doing her job properly? Ridiculous, that’s what she would be telling him. Someone rapped on the door before the young queen looked up. It was the butler and there was a missive for her on the tray.
Arabella lighted up at the sight. “Oh, Gods. I have been dying for some excitement about this dull day. Who was it from?” she asked as she looked at the wax that was used on the back of the missive. It was from her best friend with the vine insignia. Arabella smiled.
“You’re dismissed,” she said as the butler bowed.
“Very good, Your Highness,” he said before stepping out of the private study and closing the doors. Arabella broke the wax and read the contents of the missive. She smiled brightly, showing her perfectly lined teeth before she was holding the missive to her chest. Then, she squealed with happiness.
“Finally, I know that they were right for each other. And here Aiden thinks that I am not a good matchmaker,” she mumbled before someone was kissing her neck from the back, holding her in place.
“Who thought you were not a good matchmaker, my love?” her husband whispered huskily as Arabella turned, showing the missive that she had just read. Aiden read it and arched his eyebrows at her, wanting some explanation.
“Oh, please. You think that I am not fit to be a matchmaker,” Arabella said as she rolled her eyes, but her lips plastered with a smile. “But then again, my gut is always right and that means, you don’t have to say anything about it, my love. Just watch and enjoy the show,” Arabella said before she was smiling, pointing out to Aiden what her best friend was telling about the newlyweds that she had just paired up with several weeks ago was doing.
EMILY was looking at the fabric stash that she wanted to buy for the newest curtain drapes that she had in mind for another one of the rooms in the townhouse. However, she did not know if she had to use the yellow curtains just because the butler had been calling that room the ‘yellow room’.
“I thought that would be the right choice, but what if it simply defeats the purpose of that and people might be thinking of something else?” she mumbled to herself as Emily was touching and feeling the fabrics that brought her joy to match in the yellow room.
That was until she bumped into someone.
“Oh!” Emily exclaimed as she turned to look at the person that she bumped into, a smile was plastered on her face. “I’m sorry! I didn’t think there was anyone there. I should have been looking where I was going,” she said before the other person, a young woman, turned to stare at her face. Emily gasped as she knew who she was.
Felicity Habiet.
The other woman was blinking her eyes before she stepped closer to Emily. The marchioness was about to flee before Felicity was calling after her. “My lady! I am sorry for bumping into you. I hope you are not severely injured?” she asked, making Emily freeze to her spot as Felicity was approaching her. She blinked.
What the hell happened here? Where’s the Felicity Habiet that wished to claim my husband? Who is this woman, so prim and proper?! She mused before Felicity was smiling at her. Then, she laughed.
“Oh, the look on your face, my lady!” she said before Felicity was dusting some of the dirt that somehow ended up on Emily’s clothes.
“I wish I could capture that and show it to the world,” she said as Emily stepped back from her. She was gripping the reticule as Emily was trying to gain back her composure after such a meeting that surprised her. She cleared her throat.
“Thank you, Felicity. I was not looking around when you were there. I apologize,” Emily said as she was trying to get out of that vendor as soon as she could. But Felicity was not making it easier when she called out to her.
“My lady, wait!”
