Chapter 51

Viper
I had finished my paperwork and was having a beer with a few brothers before heading home. Even though most of us have wives we still need to spend time with each other. We all need a break once in a while just like the ladies do. It keeps our bond strong and gives us a chance to catch up with each other. I didn’t plan on hanging out long. Goof called me this morning and told me what happened to the rink’s shed. So I know my girl had a rough day. I wanted to get home and check on her.

Tank was telling me a story about Lita’s latest stunt. She is Tank and Lilly’s youngest of their two kids and a handful. This time she wanted to wash the dishes by herself like a big girl. She couldn’t reach the sink so she loaded the dishes in the bathtub instead. She filled the tub with bubbles instead of dish soap and got in the tub because it was easier to wash the dishes that way.The end result was a flooded bubbly bathroom and the dishes were still dirty. Lilly was upset and all Tank could do was laugh. Lilly made Tank and Lita clean the mess. By the time Tank was done telling the story we were all laughing.
My phone that was laying on the bar rang and I saw it was Goof. They should be on their way home by now. I picked it up but didn’t get to say a word. “ Viper, we have some asshole trying to run us off the road. Happy is leading him away from your house.” Goof said. “ How is Sabine?” I asked. Before he could answer I heard a thud and metal on metal. “ Fuck he hit us again. Pocket is fine. I have her.” Goof yelled. “ Where are you? I’ll send back up.” I asked, already standing. “ Fifteen miles south from your place. An old dirt from. Free from traffic.” Goof stated.

The next sounds I hear make my heart freeze. Metal scrapping, glass shattering and repeated thudding. Then the line goes dead. “ Goof! Goof!” I shout into the phone knowing in my gut it is no good. I head out the door. I hear the thud of boots behind me. “ What’s going on, brother?” Tank asks as he follows me. I give him a quick run down as I run to my bike. Noone says a word and just jumps on their bikes with me. I see Thor, Ace, Rowdy and Tank ride out with me. We don’t know exactly where we are going but I have a rough idea. It will take us at least fifteen minutes to get there even going top speed.

My phone starts to ring again. I have never been so grateful for the bluetooth Ratchet helped us install in our helmets. I answer hoping it is Goof with an update. “ Viper, Sabine just called. The guys and her were in an accident. She said the car is upside down somewhere. I tracked her phone. I already have Bradford and an ambulance on route. We are five minutes out.” Casper said. “ How was Sabine?” I asked. “ She said she was stuck. And hurt. Then she passed out.” Casper said. I could hear the fear in his voice. “ Let me know when you get there.” I said and disconnected the call.

Another call comes in right after. “ Viper, man. I’m sorry. I hit my head and was knocked. Happy is awake now too. We just cut ourselves out and I’m trying to get to Pocket.” Goof said. “ How is she?” I asked. “ I don’t know yet. I hear bikes. Is that you?” Goof asked. “ No. Must be Casper. He said Sabine was awake a few minutes ago.” I said. “ She isn’t now. Happy, I have to cut her out. Hold her so she doesn’t fall.” Goof said. I don’t say anything else, just listen. I hear the bikes pull up and shut off. I hear boots running. “ Happy, move your ass. You are in no condition to help.” I hear Rocket shout. “ Ice, get over here and help me. We need to ease her down.” she yells. I hear some shuffling. “ We have her. Cut the belt.” Rocket said. Rocket has medical training so I’m glad she is taking charge.

“ We got her. Goof, move slowly. Keep her as still as possible. Ice, you got her legs?” Rocket asks. “ Got her.” “ Casper, I need a place to lay her down.” Rocket yells. “ We are ready for you.” Casper says. He sounds like he is far away. “ We move as one.” Rocket says. I hear boots on gravel but nothing else. “ Let’s get her down. Bend with me.” Rocket said. Silence. I’m assuming Rocket is checking her over. “ Rocket?” Casper said. “ I know. Find out where that ambulance is. Ice, I want you to breathe in her mouth when I tell you.” Rocket said.

“ Goof, tell me what is going on.” I yelled out. “ I’m sorry, Prez. I didn’t know we were still connected.” Goof said. Did I hear him sniffle? “ Viper, Pocket. She’s not.” Goof said. “ She’s not what?” I screamed. “ Viper, she isn’t breathing. Rocket couldn’t find a pulse. She and Ice are doing CPR now.” Goof said. Yes, that was a sniffle I heard before because he did it again. I red line my bike to get to Sabine faster. I see bikes and an overturned car in the distance. I park my bike as close as I can without being in the way. I put my kickstand down, yank off my helmet and run with everything I have to where Casper is standing. I see him looking down when I get to his side. I see why. He is looking at Sabine’s lifeless body while Ice and Rocket work on her. “ Come on Sabine. Fight back. Where the hell is that ambulance?” Rocket grunts out as she does chest compressions. I see Ice breath into Sabine’s mouth. Under a different scenario I would have yanked him back and beat the shit out of him. But he is literally trying to breathe life into Sabine.

I hear the sirens off in the distance. “ They will be here soon.” I croak out. Rocket pushed on Sabine’s chest “ You hear that sweetly. Help is on the way. Just hang on a little longer.” “ Come on, Pixie. I can’t lose you.” Casper whispered beside me. Rocket removes her hands from Sabine’s chest. For a fleeting second I think Rocket is giving up. Until I see Rocket place two fingers on Sabine’s neck. “ I got a pulse. Faint but it is there. Ice go again. We need to get her breathing.” Rocket shouted. I could hear some relief in her voice.

The ambulance has finally pulled up. Stone is leading them to Sabine. Just as they get the gurney at Sabine’s side she starts coughing. The paramedics take over as Rocket fills them in on what happened. The medics and Rocket lift Sabine on to the gurney and wheel her to the ambulance. Casper and I ran with them. I watch as they hook a heart monitor to Sabine. I hear the greatest sound in the world. Sabine’s heartbeat. The other medic put an oxygen mask on Sabine to help her breath. She still hasn't opened her eyes yet. I see the medic that put the mask on Sabine lean down and sniff her. What the hell?

“ Did the car have any leaks? Oil, gas, anything?” he asked. “ Not that we saw.” Rocket said. “ Wait.” Goof said. I see him and Happy hobbling over. Happy is holding his right arm to his chest. Both have bruises and scrapes but neither have said a word. They were focused on Sabine. Goof limps to the door of the ambulance. He holds out a canister wrapped in a piece of cloth. “ This was under Sabine. I don’t know what it is but it stinks to high hell.” he says handing it over. The medic takes it and gives it a sniff. “ Whatever this is, it is all over, Pixie. You guys have any on you?” he asks. I guess he knows Sabine. I’ll find out later how. Happy and Goof sniff themselves. “ Very little.” Happy says.

“ You two looked banged up and were exposed to whatever is covering Pixie. It will be a tight fit but I think you need to come with us and get checked out.” the medic says. Goof looks at me and Happy looks at Casper. We both nod. “ Go get checked out.” I said. I look at the medic. “ I know you guys need to go. I need a second with my wife.” I don’t wait for him to answer. I jump in and get to Sabine. I lean down and kiss her forehead. “ You're going to the hospital and get checked over. I’ll be right behind you. Hang in there for me.” I said. Then I jumped out to let Happy and Goof get in. “ We will see you there.” I told them and helped the other medic close the doors.

“ Go. The rest of us and Bradford will look over all of this. Nixon is on his way. He will be there as soon as he can. Take care of my sister.” Casper said. Until this second I hadn’t even thought of Nixon. “ I have her.” I said and ran to my bike. The rest of the guys could figure out what happened. I needed to make sure my girl was going to be okay.
