Chapter 64
Pixie
Today is the day when Nixon is supposed to meet up with Whitley. Everyone is in place so I’m told although I don’t see anyone around. I saw Ailee and Rocket earlier but not since I hit the ice. Just because my competition season is over that doesn't mean the work is done. I have to prepare for next year. There are new routines to plan, new songs to pick. And I have to keep in shape. But today I can’t concentrate. I know what is on the line. I don’t want my brother hurt. And who knows what that nut job will do.
It is supposed to look like a normal day. Just Nixon coaching me. He knows my head isn’t in but we have to make it look good. For some reason they thought I would be safer on the ice. Why? I don’t know. Away from the action I guess. Nixon knows I’m nervous so he is taking it easy on me. I have my earpiece in so I know what is going on. Any minute now she would be here. I have my music playing trying to drown out my worries while I practice my split jumps. Not that I need to practice those. I mastered those when I was ten. “ Sabine, I know you're worried. But Viper and Casper have it covered. Nothing is going to go wrong.” Nixon said in my ear.
“ How did you know?” I asked. It was a stupid question. Nixon knows me better than I know myself sometimes. It drives me crazy sometimes. Especially when I’m trying to keep something to myself. “ Your jump was off. You didn't get your normal height.” Nixon said. “ I’m trying. I swear.” I told him. I didn’t want to admit I was scared. But I’m sure he knew. “ I know sis. This will be over soon.” he said. I could hear the guilt in his voice. He thinks this is all his fault for dating her. “ Nixon, this isn’t on you. You didn’t know Whitley was crazy.” I said, hoping it would help.
“ No, I didn’t. But I could have been selective about who I dick around with.” Nixon said. “ You could try thinking with your big brain instead of your little one.” I said with a giggle. “ When all of this is done I’m going to be more careful. No one. And I mean no one is more important than you in my life. I won’t put you in danger again.” Nixon said. “ I love you too.” I told him. We get a chirp in my ear. “ She’s here. Eyes open people.” Casper says. “ Just keep practicing and try to act like it is a normal day.” Nixon said. “ So you talk to the nut job and bark orders. Got it.” I said, trying to lighten the mood. I hear chuckles so I think it helps a little.
I focus on my music and make a few laps around to gain speed. “ Nixon, I was thrilled when you called me.” I hear in my ear. Must be Whitley. I recognise the whine. How did Nixon put up that? It is horrible. “ I wanted to talk to you.” Nixon said. Did they know I could hear them? Was it on purpose? “ I knew you were going to call. You couldn’t stay away from me forever.” Whitley said, so sure of herself. I try my best to not shake my head. “ I’m not talking about us until you tell me why you went after my champion skater.” Nixon said. “ Nixy.” she whines. Nixy? I’m going to have to use that when this is over. It’s fucking funny. “ Don’t Nixy, me. Tell me.” he growled. “ Because she was taking you away from me. You didn’t see it. She was always trying to come between us. Hell, you were living with her. You were always watching her practices” Whitley complained. What a moron?
“ I’m at her practices because I am her coach. I have to train her. She is my champion. I have to be with her a lot or she will never get to the Olympics” Nixon tells her. All of it is true. “ Get that speed up.” he calls out to me. “ What the hell? I thought we were going to talk. So you could get me back.” Whitley groaned. “ I just said I have to train her. Don’t you listen. I have a job that I take seriously. You knew that. You liked the idea of me being a coach.” Nixon said. “ I do like it. All those kids you teach hockey. But not her. You spend all your time with her. Why can’t you see that she is a problem.” She moaned and stomped her foot. What is she? Three.
“ If you don’t like it, that is your problem. I’m not giving up my job. Or my champion. It is her that keeps this place running and the parents bringing in their kids for me to teach.” Nixon told her. “ We can find another skater. I can help you. You can train me. I can learn to skate. For us to be together you need to get rid of her.” Whitley cried. “ Not going to happen. I’m not giving her up for you or anyone.” Nixon said. “ Well, if you won’t get rid of her I will. She should have been dead when I pushed her car over. “ Whitley yelled.
I skate around the rink hoping to get my eyes on what is happening. I know by the knot in my stomach it is fixing to get bad. “ Whitley, what are you doing?” Nixon shouts so loud I don’t need my ear piece. “ I’m getting rid of her so we can be together. She is always in my way. But once she is gone we will be happy. Just you and me. You won’t need her. I doubt anyone would miss her.” Whitley screamed. Casper yells “ Sabine get down.” What? Just as I react I hear an ear splitting bang. I don’t bother slowing down, I just drop to the ice, sliding and knocking the wind out of me. I hear another bang and something hit the ice near my leg as I try to crawl to the wall close to NIxon to hide. I hear two more bangs before I can get there.
I lean against the wall trying to catch my breath. I’m cold and sore from the drop. I know I’m going to have a few bruises with as hard as I hit.One of my arms burns a little and my chest hurts. I don’t know what is going on besides shouting. I’m too terrified to move. Did that bitch shoot at me? Was that what I heard? “ Pocket, open your eyes and look at me?” Goof yelled. When did I close my eyes? I pop my eyes open and Goof is kneeling in front of me. “ Are you hurt? Did she get you?” he asked. “ I, I don’t know. I don’t think so. I’m sore all over.” I told him. He slides one arm under my legs and one around my back. He picks me up and cradles me against his chest being mindful of my skates. “ I’m getting you out of her. I’m taking you to the club to get checked out. Just hold on to me.” Goof said as he carefully stood up. I look down and see I made it to the door in the wall and it is open.
Goof steps the four steps from the ice to the stadium and runs up the ramp. “ Goof, stop. I have to check on Nixon.” I said. “ He is fine. He was helping Rocket take the bitch outside.” Goof told me. “ Good.” I said. I place my hand on my arm that is burning and wince. I feel something sticky so I pull my hand back and look at it. Was there something on the ice? But when I look at my hand it has blood on it. I hold it up to Goof. “ Goof?” I asked. He sees it and his eyes go wide. He stops at the top of the ramp and looks down at me. “ Shit. Hold on.” he says and places me on the floor.
He quickly pulls over his kutte and shirt. He balls his shirt up and presses it to my arm. I wince again. “ Pocket, I need you to hold this on your arm. Keep pressure on it.” Goof said. I nod and do what he says. Goof puts his kutte back on and picks me back up. “ I have the truck. We are almost there. I need you to tell me if you start getting dizzy or sleepy.” he said as we went out the front door. “ Was she hit?” Casper yells. “ I don’t know. She is bleeding from her shoulder. And her shirt is a little torn. I’m taking her to the club.” Goof yelled as he loaded me up. “ I’m coming with you. Viper, Rocket and Ailee are enroute with the psycho.” Casper said. I lean back in the seat and close my eyes. I’m tired from the stress.
I hear the doors slam. “ Drive. I have her.” Casper yelled. “ Sabine, don’t go to sleep.” Casper said as he placed his hand over mine. He put more pressure on my shoulder making it hurt more. “ Ow. Damn it.” I whined. “ Yell, all you want. Just no sleeping.” Casper said. “ I’m not sleeping. I just closed my eyes.” I complained. I have had a rough day. Give me a break. “ You can’t pass out. Talk to me.” Casper said. “ You are awfully demanding. And I have ouchies.” I said as I laid my head on his shoulder. Casper laughed “ I know you do. We will get you fixed up. Viper has a top notch med room.” I will have to ask about that later. “ If that bitch shot me Nixon owes me a full steak dinner and dessert.” I told him. That was the least he could do. Right? “ I’ll make sure you get it.” Casper said. “ Almost there, Pocket.” Goof said. He better hurry. My eyes are getting heavy.
