16. Alphas Worry

Adrian was not sulking. No, he was not messed up over Alyssa's sudden disappearance from the party.

“Stop sulking” Nicholas annoying voice rang in his ears. The Alpha frowned at his friend's intrusion. What was his best friend doing in his office anyway? With a huff he turned his head to the left, only to see Nicholas slumped on his chair.

“I don’t know what you are talking about. I am not sulking.” Adrian mumbled—a pout firmly placed on his lips. It's true though; he's not sulking it's just the fact that he had a lot on his mind right now, which is leaving his brows in a furrowed state. Also, he didn’t get a wink of sleep the previous night. All because of an omega.

“Yeah, right!”

“You’re simply pouting while staring at the door because that’s what normal people do” His best friend deadpanned.

Adrian doesn't dignify that jab with a verbal response. Instead, he gave Nicholas a middle finger before turning his attention back to the wall. Not the door no matter what his best friend said. He’s old enough that he can admit that he is a bit worried this morning. Granted, he has every right to be slightly concerned given the fact that it's Monday morning and Alyssa had not yet shown up to work; nor did she say anything to him over the weekend.

So yes, Adrain was a tad concerned, not at all sulking, but he had every right to be. The Alpha considered them to be friends; worrying over your friends was a normal thing to do. Adrian always worries over his friends. Especially Eric. His business partner has a tendency to get into some type of trouble.

As the clock ticked past nine, he turned towards Nicholas.

“She hasn't shown up yet; maybe she's still upset.” Adrian let out a sigh. “I upset her”

The Alpha on the chair rolled his eyes like the best and caring, friend he was. Why was Nicholas not taking it seriously? It’s a gravely serious matter. Adrian fucked when he's the least likely person to do that. The Alpha knew not to mess around unlike someone. Cough *Eric* cough

“Bro you need to chill. She’s supposed to be here at nine.” Nicholas stared at the clock as well before turning towards Adrian with his lips pressed together. “It's just two minutes past nine, so please stop worrying. She’ll show up. Her bus must be late or something.”

The Alpha was aware that Nicholas was doing his best to convince him. Despite that, he couldn’t help but stare at the door. He almost regretted initiating the first step. Kissing her.

"Also, you have no idea if you upset her or not; but even if you did all you can do is apologise” Adrian lifted his head to glare at his friend. He’s saying that as if it’s that simple. Only if he knew how nervous and numb Adrian gets in front of her. There’s just a pull between them or something that affected him the way no one did before.

Adrain never dated anyone from the office. He knew better than to mix business with pleasure, but all his inhibitions flew out of the window the moment he saw her. The Alpha convinced Nicholas to hire her so that he could be close to her.

He rubbed his face. Thinking about it wasn’t helping him at all. Instead, he decided to distract himself.

“So...” Adrian started turning towards Nichols.

“What?” His friend raised his brow.

“Rachel showed up last night. Did you both talk?”

Nicholas groaned, hiding his face in between his hands. “Can we not talk about my toxic relationship?”

“I’m just asking!”

Rachel Adams was Nicholas girlfriend of one year. The longest relationship he ever had. She worked as a financial in charge on the third floor as she’s part of the BEFORE she understood the struggle of Nicholas engaged in work. Adrian admired her for that. It turned out that was all just a facade.

“I am still annoyed that Paris invited that gold digger.”

Adrian twisted his mouth. “Yeah me too. She never mentioned that she’s inviting the entire office!”

“That's Paris for you. The social butterfly.”

“Yeah well. Did she say something then?”

Nicholas scoffed. “She tried to, but I managed to ignore her the entire time.”

Adrian hummed. Rachel was very eager to climb to the top position. So eager that she proposed to Nicholas and when he asked for some time, she broke up with him. It turns out she was just behind his money and not for the bond. It broke Nicholas's heart and took him a long time to get out of that. That’s why he didn’t date anyone after her.

“Good for you!”

The only reason they didn’t fire her was for the contract. They took it very seriously, and she could sue them for using personal reasons to fire her. She’s determined like that.

Nicholas turned his lips. “Mmh”

As Adrain was about to voice this opinion when the door opened, in came a running, flustered looking Alyssa with a coffee tray in her hands. He suddenly stood up, his mouth parted.

She’s wearing tight brown pants and a sheer white top with a blazer coat. The neck was drenched, clinging to her skin and chest heaving up and down. Her hair was tied in a ponytail, the loose strands kissing the side of her face. Did she not use the elevator? The Alpha thought.

The omega stopped in the middle as soon as she noticed Nicholas, making a startled 'oh' face before snapping back into motion. She blinked at them.

“I am so sorry for being late. I missed my stop, so I ran all the way here” Alyssa breathed.

“You ran all the way?!” Adrian heard Nicholas ask.

“Yeah” She shyly nodded her head.

At Adrian's silence, the omega lifted her head and met his eyes. He could see them widen as she stared at both of them. It was difficult for the Alpha to take his eyes off her.

“Oh am I interrupting something?” She trailed off.

Adrian was quick to break the silence. “Not at all, Nicholas was just getting to work.”

When his partner looked at him, Adrian gave him a pointed look.

“Sure was” Nicholas cleared his throat.

The Alpha turned towards Alyssa. “Where’s my coffee, Alyssa?”

She blushed a deep shade of red. “Umm...I had no idea you’d be here. I can get you after I’m done here.”

Adrian noticed that the tray was only holding his mug. So she came to meet him first! The knowledge made his stomach flutter for some reason. Does that mean she’s not upset about the previous night?

Nicholas chuckled. “Okay, I am counting on it.”

He looked over his shoulder and gave Adrian a mock salute as he left.

With a sigh, Adrian sat back. He leaned back in his chair, trying to pretend that there wasn’t an awkward silence consuming the room. As she set the tray on the table, he took the mug and sniffed at the smell. His eyes rolled back at the warm scent filling the room, which was more of Alyssa than the coffee.

“So...” They both chimed in unison, leaving the two of them to chuckle, thus ruining the awkward bubble.

She gestured for the Alpha to continue speaking.

“I want to say sorry.” He blurted out. “For last night. I was out of line. I shouldn’t have...”

Alyssa shook her head, nervously twirling her hair. “I asked you. Please don’t apologise.”

“Then why did you run away?” Adrain sharply asked, his eyes boring into her. He didn’t catch a wink of sleep all because he thought he might have made her cry. His hand ran through his hair, tugging at his locks.

Alyssa whined at the back of her throat. The sound was so pure and raw that he wanted to pull her in his arms. The urge to protect her intensified.

“I-I was scared.”

Adrain sucked a breath. “What?”

She nodded her head, lifting her head to meet his eyes. “Yesterday, when we were all alone in the garden...I wanted you to kiss me. I never felt like that with anyone else before, and that scared me. You have been so good to me since the beginning, and I felt guilty for having those feelings. You are my boss, Adrian and I’m just your assistant. I shouldn’t be thinking those things about you.”

The Alpha felt his eyes widen. He had no idea she was so conflicted about a kiss. But it also made him feel relieved that she wanted to kiss him. For a second he thought the omega agreed because he’s her boss.

“You seriously can’t believe that! Alyssa, it doesn’t matter. We don’t live in a medieval age anymore. The status doesn’t matter.”

She shook her head.

“Is that what’s holding you back? Our status?” Adrian asked.

Alyssa swallowed loudly. “No. There’s something else.”

“What?”

“I am so sorry, but I can’t tell you.” With that, she excused herself while Adrian stared at her retreating back.

What was holding her back?
