25. Adrians Attempt
The Alpha refused to mull over the same thing over and over again. He should be following Nicholas advice and forgetting about the omega. Alyssa. The name itself stirred an emotion inside him. Just thinking about her bought a smile to his face.
Then again, he remembered the things Nicholas said to him. About her being promised. A distressed noise echoed in the empty space of his living room as the reality rushes to the forefront of his mind. It crushed him to the core. How could he forget that? His best friend sat him down and told him to stop pursuing the omega who’s promised.
At first, the Alpha didn’t want to believe him. He thought that Nicholas might be joking about Alyssa to extract revenge for some age-old prank. It turned out he wasn’t. His business partner assured him that there’s a mark on the side of her wrist, clear and bright as a day to show for her status. That’s all it took for Adrian to stagger back in shock.
Adrian felt all the blood in his veins run cold, solidifying, he shoved his face in between his hands to hide the look of his humiliated-heated face. How did he not see that coming? Her shy glances, reserved smiles should’ve been a clear sign for him, but instead, the Alpha ignored all those. He was dead set on asking her out, not bothering to read between the lines. That’s on him.
Also, why didn’t the omega say anything to him? Why Nicholas? Then it dawned on him that she might have been embarrassed and confronted his business partner instead of him. And she did right. He had no idea how he would’ve acted in front of him—maybe tainted his image forever.
A sudden blare of noise broke his train of thoughts. Slow to react, the Alpha blinked, tilting his head to see Alyssa arranging the files on his table. No shocker.
Arching a quizzical brow, Adrian regarded his assistant who continued to indulge in her work. Did she not notice his presence?
The bright sunlight from the drapes sliced through the windows, making the omega in front of him appear porcelain.
Sharp was the perfect way to describe Alyssa. So sharp. Her soft long chestnut hair falling to the shoulder teased to perfection, and her cheekbones a lovely structure. An almost perfect button nose to match her bloody beautiful eyes. Right now, those eyes were a tempest in their shade of blue, her plump pink mouth pursed.
She’s wearing the tightest white pants ever, and a skin-tight grey shirt to go along with it. To top it all off, she’s wearing a pair of black glasses, the one that made her look so innocent and fragile. He can’t help but stare at her for a while. As if she felt his eyes on her, the omega tilted her head.
“Adrian!” She practically shouted, standing up and dusting off her hands. “Good morning.”
Closing his eyes, the Alpha inhaled a reassuring breath. A scent fired at his sense. It’s so soft, and faint, that if the Alpha were a little away, he wouldn’t have caught it. It’s very flowery and delicate. A combination that made his eyes roll back.
It's utterly lovely, starting a roaring fire in his body, even in this weather.
A mere moment of that angelic sound was all it took for the Alpha to act out; somehow he couldn’t help but think of smelling her, dipping forward to nose at her jaw so he can inhale sharply.
Confusion took her over features as she stared at him, the omega whined indignantly, “Hey?”
Curiously, Adrian watched her cross her arms, waiting on him to answer before he waved her hand in front of him.
Secretly loving every second, he held her piercing stare like he always did. Knowing better than to look away.
“You were saying?”
“I wished you good morning” She twisted her mouth.
Adrian blinked at that. He didn’t even hear that, too lost in staring at her. “Oh. Morning”
The omega took a deep breath, turning to face him. “Are you still upset about...that night?”
Her lips in between her teeth, she stared at him. How can he focus on answering her? Licking his lips nervously, the Alpha pulled his eyes off her face.
“No...no I get it. I’m not mad or anything.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,” He huffed a laugh. Adrian's hurting. That’s all.
“So, you look nice. JJ's design?” He abruptly changed the conversations.
She blushed. “Yeah, he had a bunch of them delivered to me last night.”
Even though the omega shrugged like it’s no big deal, he can sense the flushed cheeks accompanied by her averted stared. The Alpha tried not to grunt in response.
“You look amazing” He complimented again.
Alyssa beamed at him before thanking him again.
“Okay, it’s time for you to go to the conference room above us for a meeting with the directors of HR. Umm...you asked me to remind you that you had to talk to them about visiting the other offices. Then after that meeting, you need to eat lunch because you’ll be swamped until seven today.”
“Thanks” Adrian sighed, already dreading to continue with his day.

“So...how are you going to travel for the convention?” Alyssa asked him, casually sipping at her milkshake.
After his meeting was done, he decided to invite the omega to join him for lunch. He didn’t want to sit all alone. Nicholas and Eric were busy with their individual meetings. At the mention of the convention, the Alpha raised his brow.
“What convention?” He mumbled; he’s really tired. He tried to search his brain for anything related to a convention, and the Alpha came up short.
She frowned. “The convention in Jersey. You are supposed to be leaving tomorrow.”
He still looked lost.
“Please tell me you’re joking?”
Adrian frowned and shook his head; should he know something about a convention?
“No! I seriously can’t remember”
Alyssa let out a sigh. “It’s that businessmen convention they have in Jersey every year. Nicholas told me it’s your turn to go this year.”
The Alpha’s eyes widened at that, and it’s comical the way he almost held on to his chair. He almost forgot.
“Damn it!” Adrian muttered, because that’s all he can say. He didn’t remember the convention; he doesn’t want to go that’s probably why his brain made him forget it actually existed.
Every year there’s a convention that’s held, invitation-only, for corporate people, and firm owners, to keep said people updated on various policies and whatnot. In all honesty, it’s just an excuse for a bunch of middle-aged people to get together, talk business and politics, drink, smoke, and get away from their families. The whole thing was tedious and unnecessary, which is why the three of them took turns.
“I don’t want to go.” Adrian huffed, staring at the pot of noodles.
“I’m sorry I don’t think you can skip this.”
The Alpha hummed. “Yeah, I know. Again thanks for reminding me; Eric would have killed me for missing it because I gave him a hard time last year.”
A giggle escaped her mouth, and she quickly smothered it, appearing to be normal. The sound of her laughter made his lips curl.
“Then I suggest you go home and pack Adrian as soon as you are done here. You can be fully prepared that way” The assistant demanded, and the Alpha wrinkled his nose.
“Aren’t I supposed to be telling you what to do?” He took another bite of his dry noodles. He had no idea why he ordered them. Yeah because Alyssa insisted on him trying the cafe noodles. Was she punishing him for something or what?
“You are, but then you hired me as your assistant so now I tell you what to do” She cheekily said.
Adrian shook his head and got back to lunch. They talked about silly things again. He had an amused smile on his face throughout it.
“So I guess I’ll see you directly on next week then, right?” Alyssa asked, her eyes wide and following his every moment. He picked up a jacket from the table and slipped it on.
The Alpha stared at her, an irreplaceable emotion built within him; shimmered in his veins, warmed his blood. And oh suddenly he realised that he didn’t want to leave her behind. Not at all.
He doesn’t want them to end in a tragedy.
“Not if you have dinner with me tonight” He casually said, hoping to sound as polite and calm as possible. Internally he was nervous about getting rejected. It’s not new to him with her.
The Alpha clenched his eyes, bracing himself for the disappointment but instead, he’s met with a question.
“Like a date?”
He shook his head, pressing his teeth together. “A friendly dinner.”
Alyssa was quiet for a few seconds before she nodded her head.
