33. Adrian is Back!

Alyssa couldn’t stop bouncing her feet as she stared at the empty hallway. Her lip was caught between her teeth and nails digging into her palms. The omega was aware that todays the day. Adrian will be back from the conference. One long week. She missed him so much during the time. It’s unbelievable.

It’s not like she didn’t try to contact him. She did, but none of her calls went through. Must be a network issue or something. No one was in contact with Adrian, so she had no other option than to wait for his return. Her ears rung as the minute hand trickled past the range. The omega swallowed noisily, her palms wet as she finally stood up and raced out of her office.

As she passed by an incredibly enormous fake potted plant a tall, figure in the distance caught her eye. He’s walking in the same direction as her, back turned to her, as he’s talking with someone, but even from far away, Alyssa could recognise that wretched posture and mop of hair. Her heart stirred in her chest, picking up into a tumbling rhythm, and she allowed herself to sigh a little. This was the moment she had been waiting for.

Wiping her wet hands against the pants, she took a deep breath so that she can project down the entire hall without fainting.

“Hey! You!”

Those two words were enough to stop Adrain in his tracks. He turned around slowly, and their eyes clashed. The omega felt the snag of it in her chest, in the way his face entirely lighted up, in the happy upturn of his lips he immediately he tried to hide. Suddenly it’s a bit difficult to breathe.

Alyssa watched as the Alpha tried to mask his happiness, display a delicate frown, making a show of looking around to see if anyone is standing near him. Why would she be calling anyone else? He pointed a finger to his chest with a look of wide-eyed innocence, as if to say who, me?

“Yeah,” She rolled her eyes, grimly. “You.”

The omega rushed to him, not caring that other people might see them. That there were surveillance cameras everywhere. All that mattered was Adrain standing in front of her.

The Alpha had enough time to mutter an “Oh,” to himself before she flung her arms into the embrace, locking them behind his neck and her legs around his hips. Even though he was caught off guard, the Alpha managed to catch and hold her, one hand gripping her thigh and the other firmly supporting his hips.

Alyssa was aware that Adrian almost rocked backwards with the force of their impact, teetering back a few steps, but he kept them upright. They hold on to each other so tightly, far more than her run-and-leap really called for, but the omega was already having trouble breathing in the first place. She’s not bothered. His arms fit snug around her, sealing them so close together that she could feel the dig of each of the buttons of his shirt on her own chest. Her hands grasped at the deep curve of his neck, the jut of his shoulder blade, her fingertips pressing in as she tried to breathe into his scent. She felt giddy with excitement.

The omega buried her face into the dip of his shoulder, hiding her grin. “I missed you so much,” she muttered, the heat of her mouth on his shirt melting away the tension between them.

“Please don’t ever leave.”

He stilled. A few seconds later, he threw his head back and laughed, a loud, honking thing that echoed around the hallway. When he looked down at her again, returning the full glow of his attention to her, Alyssa had to purse her lips together to try and keep that please, preening smile hidden away.

They’re standing so close, Alyssa realised right then, that she would only have to reach up, twine her fingers into his hair and guide him forward to bring their lips together. But the omega tried very hard not to think about that.

After two more beats of intense eye contact, he laughed once again, quietly to himself this time, then tugged at her sleeves of the blazer before meeting her eyes. “If I knew you were going to miss me like this, I would have gone sooner.”

The thought twisted something deep inside her. She couldn’t afford to lose him again.

“No,” She whispered, her mouth twisting.

Adrian shrugged, raising his hands in defence. “Okay then no more talks of leaving”

They automatically started gravitating towards her office to which she finally released the contented sigh. Alyssa has been holding in for a week now.

As they sat in her office, the omega couldn’t help but stare at Adrian. The Alpha being covered doesn’t help much at all, not when the white slub t-shirt he’s got on only served to make him look even more soft and appealing.

Wide eyes clear and brown, he returned her searching gaze with equal intensity. A small, crease appeared between his brows the longer time crawled on without both of them not saying anything.

“What?” Adrian asked, smiling at her curiously.

“Nothing” The assistant swallowed, feeling her throat dry all of a sudden. “Just looking at you.”

She never had an issue with being honest, at least not about the little things. That’s maybe half of her problem - Alyssa can’t keep her mouth shut when she’s really better off being silent, and she couldn’t open up when it would make her life far more straightforward to do so. The struggle!

“Well, don’t do that,” Adrian playfully grinned “Pretty soon, you’ll find something you don’t like.”

Her eyes wandered over his face once more, taking in every feature. “Nah,” The omega breathed out. “Don’t think so.”

The puzzled quirk of his smile stayed on his lips, but the dip between his eyebrows deepened like he’s not quite sure how to reply to her. The conversation had veered so far off course that Alyssa didn’t even know which direction they’re going in anymore. She gave herself four seconds of silent, internal panic before the omega heard footsteps echoing in her direction.

“Oops,” Nicholas muttered, the door slamming violently into the wall.

Alyssa heard him trip over something - probably the fake tree pot on the way by the left side of the wall. He then gently shut the swinging door behind him before his eyes went to Adrian. He’s suspiciously quiet at the presence of his friend before giving him a silent nod. Did they have a secret language not involving words?

Clearing her throat, she stared at the Alpha, not wanting to be caught staring at them for too long. As if Nicholas felt her eyes on him, the Alpha manoeuvred towards her direction.

“Hi,” He rasped, the morning drawl of his voice made the hair on her neck stand up.

She suppressed her shiver, tilting her head to stare at him. “Are you drunk? You know that it’s day time right?”

“Morning to you too!” Nicholas grinned at her, straightening up with one trainer in his hand.

She scowled at his distressingly energetic mood, eyeing him suspiciously, “You seem...spirited this morning. What happened?”

“Nothing just had a good workout is all,” Nicholas sighed, slumping on the chair beside Adrian.

“That reminds me I have to go home and shower” Adrian cleared his throat, wrinkling his nose at Nicholas.

“You directly came here?” Nicholas raised his brow.

The Alpha blushed, his cheeks red as he nodded his head. “Umm...I kinda forgot something here so” He trailed, not meeting anyone’s eyes.

Nicholas bobbed his head, still unconvinced. “Okay did you find it then?”

Adrian lifted his head, blinking at Alyssa. “Yeah”

She had no idea why he was looking at her. The omega remained in her seat as Adrian stood up, wiping the invisible lint off his sleeves. He turned to her with a pointed look. “I’ll see you at lunch, then?”

“Yeah”

After he walked away, Nicholas turned to her. “You ever gonna tell him?”

It made Alyssa jump. She almost forgot that Nicholas was still in the room. Her boss was much more observant than he let on, and it’s not like she was hiding anything from him. “Don't know what you mean,” she sniffed haughtily in response.

Nicholas didn’t humour her, instead of raising his eyebrows. “Think you should tell him.”

The omega sighed. “I am working on it. I just need to pluck up the courage.”

“You don’t need to be brave,” He mused quietly, a chuckle slipping out of his lips as he stared back at her. “Just need to be honest.”

Alyssa thought about it. More than anything else, she wanted to tell him that Adrian being away made her realise what she’s needed to do more evident than ever. The omega convinced herself that all she needed was the right moment.
