26. Alyssas Tragedy
A box arrived for the omega shortly before the office is to close at five. The package she had no idea about, but it looked expensive. The box, a large, rectangle box that is shallow height, is what purchases would typically be carefully placed into if not hung in a garment bag.
Paris hovered over the box, pestering Alyssa to open it quickly.
After much contemplation, the omega opened the box. On top of tissue paper which concealed the contents was a folded piece of paper. A smile curled around her lips when it read Adrian's name. He had a note with smiley stating that he's waiting for the dinner. She can't stop smiling for the rest of the day.

The omega was excited about the dinner. She's dressed in black flared jeans, a white shirt with a low neckline, and a black fur-lined coat jacket. And even though it's not that cold yet in New York, she was cautious about wearing a coat.
She looked beyond perfect. For being in something not revealing, the cut of the shirt only showed off her shape in a different, no less appealing way. The jacket tucked in at her tiny waist to showcase that small, delicate frame. It ends shorter than most of the jackets she owned, to allow for her round hips to be appropriately appreciated which one can't help but do because the trousers had the perfect fit.
Trying for nonchalant, she wanted to tone it down with her make up. She’s already beginning to sweat a little, nervous at the idea of sitting with Adrian all alone for dinner. After knowing about his not so friendly feelings for her, there’s no way she could pretend to be normal.
Strong and muscular with honey tan skin, sharp features, soft golden brown hair, and the most alluring eyes the omega had seen on anyone, dark and big and layered. It doesn't help that the sinfully sharp jaw framed his face.
And his lips, holy shit. Thin, pink and smooth and oh so kissable. She couldn’t help but shiver at the taste of them. It only took a second for all that to surge into irritation quickly. Alyssa was harshly reminded of the mark on her wrist.
The omega clenched her eyes shut. Her mind suddenly wandered to the incident that took place earlier in the office. There was a sudden shift in Eric's behaviour.
She could sense the awkwardness as they both left the office together. Go to the elevator together. Once inside, she was glad that Eric was getting off on the same floor as her. The omega hoped to talk to him about his sudden behaviour change. He was doing fine the previous night, treating her to dinner and suddenly refusing to maintain eye contact. Unfortunately for her, he stayed in one corner. There hasn't been a word spoken between him and Alyssa. The Alpha only seethed as they got closer to the destined floor.
When they get to the doors to the sidewalk, a greater degree of realisation dawned on her. She didn’t get her point across him at all.
Shaking his head, Alyssa focused on the task at hand. She can worry about Eric later. Just then, her phone rang. The vacant bathroom was sheltered by all her things strewn around as she slipped inside.
Sliding on the green icon, she pressed the phone to her ear.
The faulty fluorescent lights overhead flicker in and out of the bathroom. Cheap maintaining. She thought under her breath.
“Hello?” She whispered.
Her mother’s sobs were evident from the other side of the phone. Panic gripped her chest at once. She clutched the phone tightly, trying to ignore the sudden thud in her gut.
“Mom...M-Mum what happened? Why are you crying?”
Her mother hiccuped loudly, “Alyssa...you need to come back. Come back now.”
She sucked a sharp breath at that. “Mom, please calm down. Is everything alright?”
“N-No. It's Leslie”
Her heart stopped at that. Alyssa felt a bitter taste in her mouth.
Leslie Oars was her mother’s best friend. She used to stay close to the packhouse, but then their pack moved. Even though she lived far away, she always visited them for Christmas and Thanksgivings. It was fun to have her around. She was one of those cool aunts who let you get away with anything.
Alyssa learned a lot from her. About packs and bonds. They were close because Leslie was also promised omega.
“Alyssa are you there?”
“Yes, mum” Alyssa sniffled, wiping the tears off her eyes.
Aside from her fury of losing her aunt, she was also relieved. In twisted relief, because no matter the pain that came with her loss, it will never amount to the anguish Leslie had to endure. The names people called her because she chose to wait for her promised.
“We have to be there.”
Alyssa nodded her head. “I’ll be there by morning.”
As the line went dead, another pained noise slipped out of her mouth. She bent forward, found her position, and allowed her body what it craved so desperately. To cry.
“Oh...” She cried raggedly; tears are streaming down her blanched face to voice the hideous despair. The omega couldn’t help but remember the last time she talked to her. Her aunt sent her a lovely cookies box as good luck to her job in the city.
Sickness rattles in her bones, gripping her tightly. With difficulty, the omega tried to breathe evenly, her heartbeats uneven. The sadness in her had taken form within her, soulless and repulsive, eating her inside.
There’s no point in screaming, so she suffered in silence, refusing to accept it, and this is the least she deserved.

After gathering herself, she realised she had to call the Alpha and cancel their dinner plan.
Adrian's breathy voice echoed from the other side. “Did you get your gift?”
It’s so unfair. She wanted to cry at the cruel twist. Alyssa didn’t want to leave him like that. Her head pounded and her sight was blurry. After a minute of coming to, she decided to answer him back.
“Y-Yeah” Alyssa croaked, swallowing the lump in her throat.
The Alpha made a sound from the other side, his voice a little wavering as he spoke. “Hey...What happened to your voice Alyssa? Have you been crying?”
Shaking her head slightly in bewilderment, she walked out of the bathroom and in her room. The omega only stumbled a little bit. Her only problem now was, well, finding a way to tell him that she couldn’t make it without breaking down. That seemed to be the hardest part.
“Umm...Adrian, I can’t.”
“What’s going on Alyssa?” His concerned voice made her eyes clench. Black crowded the edges of her vision, threatening as she breathed raggedly, dragging herself to answer his question. It’s pathetic how many times she had to pause and clutch the side of the wall, working her jaw with the effort it took to talk to him.
“I have to go back to my village.”
Adrian made a pained noise. “You're leaving? Now?”
A panic bulleted through her at the sound of the Alpha. The omega couldn’t bring herself even to speak, simply nodded her head. Nodded like he could see her from the phone screen.
Vindictive as she can be, the record was not the best. When the Alpha kissed her at the party, she managed to escape from there. It scared her that time and also she had a reason. Will Adrian believe her again?
“I'm sorry! I have no choice!” Alyssa was quick to appease him, hoping that he can truly understand her. “P-P-Please, don't be u-upset with me.”
Like there's an option for him. This shouldn't even surprise him. According to him, the omega had always been finding excuses. But now...Alyssa had a genuine reason, but it didn’t matter. It is what it is.
"So don't go then," She can't help but find the depthless hope in his voice. The omega hated herself for it. “You can go after dinner, Alyssa. Everything is almost ready.”
How can the omega pretend to enjoy the dinner when she lost her aunt? The closest person to her. Alyssa wouldn’t be able to stomach anything. The thought of food itself made her nauseous.
“Adrian...I wish I could do that, but that's not possible right now. I need to leave”
The idea that they might never be like before again swallowed her whole. When she came to the city, he’s the first one to help her. Her first friend. The thought of hurting him was difficult. Maybe she should tell him the real reason before it got too far. The omega couldn’t imagine losing him.
A bitter chuckle escaped Adrian's mouth. “This feels like a sign. Maybe I should not have asked you at all. Have a good night Alyssa.”
He hung up before she could say anything.
