Debt - Part ll
They walked and walked, talking about anything and everything they could find as they walked along the unpaved road. The way they chatted and laughed anyone could mistake them for long-lost friends, but they were extremely cautious not to slip past anything about them that they kept hidden inside the deepest pit of their souls. Their souls were entangled with their own past and memories that they kept out of reach and away from their selves and anyone, making sure that no one discovered the monsters of their past. They had come to a halt when the blaring sound of a truck filled the silent road. Onyx had lifted his hand in an attempt to stop the truck, to which the driver had stopped, and was kind enough to give them a lift.
Onyx and Ophelia had climbed aboard and were on their way to their destinations. Ophelia slowly dozed off on Onyx's shoulder as he made small talk with the driver throughout the way. The slight vibration of the truck lulled her deep into sleep as Onyx's voice became fainter and fainter, and she succumbed to exhaustion. Her physic was tucked and molded over Onyx as she slept through the magic hour on a summer evening through the small road on the outskirts of Luxembourg.
Onyx couldn't help but stare at the woman sleeping soundly with her head on his lap. From finding her walking alone in the street to the accident, it had been a long day.
She felt her head rest on the soft pillow as the warmth left her and was replaced by a duvet that encased her entire body. The duvet was supposed to keep her warm, but her body craved the warmth she'd felt from the person who had just tucked her into the soft bed.
As he walked away to sit on the lounge chair in the small motel room he had rented for the night, Onyx glanced at the female he had just tucked in and saw her face contour in discomfort. The truck driver had dropped them off at the motel as he was heading in the opposite direction, and it was getting dark and dangerous outside. He was only able to find one available room and was left no choice but to share it with Ophelia.
When Ophelia was roused from her slumber, it was already dark outside, and for a moment she was perplexed to find herself in a motel room, but when Onyx entered with some food and a phone charger, her confusion was erased. "You are awake!" he exclaimed as he noticed her sitting up.
"Where are we?" she inquired.
"In a motel somewhere in Luxembourg," he explained as he sat down. "The driver dropped us off here as he was heading the other direction from here." He informed her, and she yawned and nodded her head.
"And since there was only one room available, it looks like you'll have to share it with me." He said taking a spoonful of the Green Bean and Potato Soup.
"I suppose that's fine." She responded leaning forward taking the second bowl of soup that he offered her.
They had long since finished their meal and retired to bed. They were lying under two different duvets, staring up at the blank white ceiling.
"What inspired you to become a pilot?" Onyx asked out of the blue, and Ophelia gave him a sidelong glance.
"What's with the sudden question?" She asked, her gaze returning to the ceiling.
"I couldn't think of anything else to say to start a conversation, and I didn't want us to be in awkward silence." He shrugged and Ophelia chuckled.
"I wanted to get away from it all, fly and fight, and look cool getting out of a fighter jet." Onyx looked at her and put his weight on his elbow as she began to speak.
"I've had my fair share of fights in the sky and on the ground. But when life called for a reality check, I had to give it all up and come back. My father had become ill, his company was on the verge of bankruptcy, and we desperately needed money. He needed me. So I left the Air Force and went to work for Delta Airlines. I attempted to satisfy my hunger by flying their Boeings, and they provided me with what would fill my stomach and cover the expenses. I thought things would go this way until I paid off the debt, but then you showed up, and I got stuck. Away from my job, my father, and my mundane existence. Flying an arrogant billionaire from country to country just because he wanted to irritate his crew." She sighed and shifted to the opposite side of the bed, facing away from him.
Onyx was consumed with guilt as he realized he had her stuck with flying him from country to county solely because he was enraged at Dallas, and he wanted to annoy him, which was extremely childish on his part. He felt bad about taking away Ophelia's vacation and keeping her away from her job and her sick father.
"I uh I'm sorry." He tried to apologize, but all he got was a hum from her. Onyx had been kept awake by his wrongdoings over the last several weeks as Ophelia slowly drifted off to sleep. But, over time, he, too, had given up and fallen asleep.
When the first rays of sunlight filtered through the window curtains, she awoke to find herself in an empty room. The spot next to her was cold. She had waited for Onyx to show up, but he had never did. It was as if he hadn't even been there the night before, as if he had completely vanished.
