Chapter 64: You have no shame.

The water from the tap fell softly on Jessie's skin, as she stretched her hands to her phone.
Staring at the screen,"unknown number? Hmm..., strange" Jessie mumbled out, "well," she announced, then tapped on the answer button.
"Hello, Jessica," the voice rang out in the air, causing anxiousness in the heart of Jessie.
"Who is this?" Jessie asked, her hands scratching through her hair since she was washing it. Her voice sounding firm and unwavering like she wasn't scared, but her heartbeat did no good. It raced like there was a battle where she had to stay on the frontline fighting off the enemies, because even the sprinters in hundred meters races did not have their hearts pacing as much as hers did.
The caller chuckled a little on the phone, then spoke out.
"Don't my voice sound familiar? Or you just don't pay attention to little details like this? Well, I am Rebecca, if you still need clarity. I am the girl that walked over to you while you were at the boutique with Charles."
Rebecca. The name echoed in Jessie's head multiple times, and she began to wonder why she didn't pick the voice. Maybe it was because she decided to not pay attention to whatever past life Charles had, or was it the brewing anger she felt for Rebecca that made her push her name to the back of her memory? Whatever it was, she was going to sort it out later.
"But why was Rebecca calling her?" Jessie pondered.
"Hello, did you suddenly turn dumb hearing my name or your guilty conscience is eating you up?" Rebecca voiced out, calling Jessie back to the ongoing call.
Jessie's face got startled hearing Rebecca talk, "was the girl not crazy?" She asked herself internally.
"What conscience are you talking about, Rebecca?" Jessie inquired, standing up from the bathtub she was sitting on. She moved her hands to the tap, then turned it off.
While waiting for an answer from Rebecca, Jessie picked up her towel and tied it to her body, then sat on a stool that was placed in front of the mirror in the bathroom.
"Now I'm certain you have no shame too, you are not just messing with my man, now you are claiming that you have no idea too, wow! you should get some respect for yourself," Rebecca voiced out, intentionally trying to piss Jessie off.
Jessie's facial expression was a mix of uncertainty and excitement. She was not a bit surprised, not like she was supposed to be. Rebecca's name was always a point of concern to her, and she had taken a personal decision to know who Rebecca was.
After the incident at the boutique, Jessie still kept on pressing Charles to explain the relationship he had with Rebecca. On the day they had the night out before he had a shag with her, a lot of thoughts ran they her mind, including that of Rebecca and she threw the question at Charles once again.
His exact words to her were, "Rebecca was just a passing phase, and I think we are over it already. Besides, she was never anything important to me."
So to an extent, it was better to put that Jessie expected such reactions from Rebecca, even though she did not think it to go that way, but the incident at the boutique showed that Rebecca still had her eyes on Charles.
"If it was any other talk or just any random girl saying this, then I will lay low. You know, hide my face. But it is sad that I already know that you are nothing important to Charles, and just some random girl desperately seeking his attention," Jessie announced, "you even went as far as searching for my number and you talk about shame. Goodness! I'll probably hide my face if I were you. I have not hidden a perfect life, but I have not fought for a guy either. You can do better than this Rebecca."
Jessie was sad that she was actually having that conversation with Rebecca. Personally, if she had an option, she will prefer Charles never had anything with her. But as it seemed, it was his past and she had to accept it.
On the other hand, Rebecca was shocked that Jessica had the guts to answer her. She felt she was going to be like some other girl, with very weak attributes, and pretty easy to manipulate.
She had an issue with her boyfriend in the past week, so she was looking for how to run to Charles. Usually, she did not pay much attention to him, not as he did either, but she liked him more among the other guys she had shags with.
Since the issue with her boyfriend came up, the issue which was about how lifestyle, then she decided to use Charles to pass time instead.
Only for Rebecca to try to get his attention, and it was not forthcoming, so her cunning mind settled that it was because of Jessie, making Rebecca come all out for her.
"You have such attitude, and to think that there was a time this boyfriend of yours that you are flaunting, was desperately begging me for a relationship with him," Rebecca lied, trying to increase the insecurity she noticed from Jessie's somewhat loud heartbeat.
Jessie gulped hearing Rebecca's words and did all her best to not show the sadness she felt.
Once again, she had to be listening to some crazy talks from a supposed girlfriend to the guys she had as boyfriends. It reminded her of Jason and her experience with him. Were all guys like that?
Her nervousness did not brew out from the words that Rebecca said to her, but the fear that Charles may end up doing exactly what Jason did.
Still, after hearing Rebecca spill out whatever she had in mind, Jessie did not want to give her that satisfaction of making her feel bad, so she just let out a loud chortle.
To Rebecca, Jessie's laughter was intended to piss her off, but only Jessie knew that the laughter was to control the build-up of terrible emotions that was welling inside of her.
"Tssk..., It's sad that I'm really not concerned about what happened then, and it's your loss that you were chasing clouts and did not accept him, you really are missing out on the benefits," Jessie shrugged. Even from the call, she could picture the words hitting hard on Rebecca, and she smirked thinking about it.
"Well he's still so lucky, you didn't notice his goodness. How will he have known that as important as you think you are, you will stoop so low to my humble and demeaning level, trying to exchange words with me," Jessie shook her head from the phone giving a disapproving smile?
"How dare you compare...," Rebecca raised her voice and was curtly interrupted by Jessie.
"Shh...," Jessie hushed, literally raising her left index finger to her lips as if Rebecca was directly in front of her, "I am not done yet," she added.
"A quick piece of advice for you, get your life fixed, so you don't have to jump from one person to another and run back to them later, bringing down to the level of having to exchange words with the innocent important girls like I am, in their lives," she stated.
"Jessica or whatever you are, you can't just go about telling me what to do. Are you not okay?" Rebecca questioned, her voice filled with anger.
Jessie rolled her eyes, listening to Rebecca yell her guts out, "too bad that I am not so jobless to have this conversation with you, as it seems, I think I have to dress up for a date. And it hurts more, realizing that it's with the same girl you are trying to query me for. But there's nothing I can actually do, enjoy your sad life and a promise to save a wrap of steak for you," Jessie giggled softly, and hung up.
She stared at her phone for something, smiling smugly. She too was impressed with her comebacks for Rebecca and had never imagined that she could be that good at being bitchy.
Jessie smirked as she stood up, raising herself back to the bathtub, not forgetting to drop her phone behind.
Turning on the tap, her mind made a mental note to talk with Charles, and tell him about everything that went on with her and Rebecca. Including questioning him deeper about Rebecca and getting assurances to sort out her insecurities.
********
In a dark room with just the dull lights switched on, Rebecca paced around, recalling every single conversation she had with Jessica. Her breathing increased, and her fists clenched a little thinking about it. She grabbed the flower vase that was on a table in front of her and smashed it angrily at the wall, shrieking as she did.
Jessica sure had an attitude, and it irked Rebecca so greatly. She was filled with so much rage, that she did not notice her phone that rang out endlessly. Or did she notice it, and chose to ignore it since it was a call from a member of the classy girls she walked with? They must have probably found out that she had been ditched by her boyfriend she boasted about and called to confirm.
Rebecca knew she had to get Charles soon, to get her face back, and she was not going to let the little Jessie that came from nowhere, be a hindrance to her.
She had to handle Jessie soon, but for now, she was going to just focus on Charles.
Her brows furrowed as she kept on thinking of what to do, with her lips curved crookedly as she kept on rotating it on an imaginary axis.
Rebecca smirked as a thought came into her head, and she nodded her head smugly.
Love, even in thorns
