Chapter 9: It's not happening
Jessie was short of words this time, was her actions that clear, because so far she has been predictable to Luciana and even Charles, who seemed to know what she was thinking about at almost every second.
"Firstly, I didn't want to eat you and also, it really was rude to behave like that. We are all emotional beings, you don't know what he could make of it", Jessie said sternly.
"I'm sorry, I know I was wrong and I don't think he misunderstood my intentions", Luciana said.
"I hope he didn't", Jessie said in a way of you better pray everything is fine.
Luciana being sincerely sorry, "I will talk to him", she said.
"If Charles were to ask you to have a relationship with him, will you agree?", Jessie heard Luciana ask. Really, she had no idea where Luciana was heading to with her questions and she hoped it was ending soon as she wasn't ready to have that conversation.
"Why do you ask?", Jessie probed.
"Do you always have to answer questions with questions?", Luciana said pouting.
"Who knows, I'm possibly trying to avoid being sold off", Jessie stated. Luciana chuckled at Jessie's remark, "nice one", she said.
Jessie smiled in response to Luciana statement and nodded her head in support, like I know I am good, sing my praise.
"Lol... okay, so how about the answer to my question?"
"Lucy... don't you forget things", Jessie queried. "Well, I'm not answering you"
"Please... I know I don't have to force you, I just want to know", Luciana pleaded.
"The thing is I have no answer because I don't think it's ever going to happen", Jessie said with convinction.
"Oh my!", Luciana stated in astonishment. "Oh girl of little faith, art thou hope that weak that you trust that this littlest of things can not happen", Luciana chirped in while trying to mimick the classical period.
Laughing in reply, "I know what I mean", Jessie said
"And what dost thou mean, my lady?"
"Okay, you should stop that first", Jessie chortled with a raised voice.
"Lol, okay. But come on why do you think he will never ask you out?", Luciana quizzed.
"Because he is obviously not interested in me."
"And why do you think so?", Luciana probed.
"He is having a thing with Rebecca, how did you not notice that?", Jessie said, "and I think that's enough question. Remember we are keeping Charles waiting."
"Okay, you win again", Luciana surrendered. "I just think you like him and he likes you too, so maybe whenever the question is thrown, you should know what to do"
"Till then, but for now let's round up. I'm hungry please and I'm sure you are", Jessie stated.
"I really am, I feel so weak", Luciana said in total agreement.
On one part of the room, the girls discussed about Charles in his very own room and they had no idea he was back long ago and caught some gist from their conversation. As his intention, was not to eavesdrop on the conversation, he did not hear them really clearly and didn't catch every single detail of the conversation.
But certainly, he heard the part where Jessie said he was involved with Rebecca and was obviously not interested in her. Was his actions not clear enough to convince her? He thought.
The girls stepped out of the bathroom at same time only to find Charles staring at them. Instantly, they forced up a smile to hide their surprise as they were talking about him, not long ago.
Charles on the other hand, acted like it wasn't too long he stepped in, so they do not think he listened to their conversation.
"You are done already, interesting. We should eat now", Charles smiled at them signalling them to move to the bed. As he lived alone, his room was just a simple one with his bed, a sidestool, a Chair and few other things. Pulling the chair to meet them at the bed, he sat to eat.
They sat in a way that Charles faced the two guys who sat on the bed, with the side stool in between. The tray of food was placed on it and they all ate from it.
About four minutes into eating, they maintained this quietness before Jessie broke the silence,
"I don't know how something as simple as eggs can be so tasty", Luciana remarked.
Charles who was concentrating on his meal only smiled at it. "But really, how did you make the eggs that it is this good?", Luciana asked, she really didn't enjoy the silence, to her, it made the atmosphere feel kind of heavy and she was not the person to comfortably stay in such atmosphere.
"There is nothing special about it. I just did the usual method of breaking the eggs, whisking it, spicing it a little and frying", Charles replied.
"And who said the usual can't taste different", Luciana queried.
Jessie who ate with a smile just watched as the two had their conversation, "don't mind Luciana, she always leave good remarks for food. She tells me my food is nice, even when it's obvious I made rubbish", Jessie joined.
"So are you saying the egg is rubbish and she just wants to make me feel good?", Charles gasped raising his hand to his chest like his emotions were being hurt.
"No..... you really should not misunderstand me", Jessie said, "I was just trying to say ..."
"It's fine..... you really do not have to explain", Charles said. Jessie who was pleased that he didn't take her words wrongly heard him add, "I get that it does not taste good", Charles sadly said.
"Really it's good, I'm serious. I was only implying that..", Jessie's voice trailed off, what was she even implying, next time she won't just barge into conversations so her voice could be heard. It turns out she always said rubbish, she thought.
Luciana who had caugt the grin on Charles' face earlier could not hide her laugh. She laughed out so loud that she choked on the food, Charles mildly joined in the laugh, leaving Jessie at a loss of what just occurred.
Jessie hurriedly gave Luciana tea to sip so she feels better. Meanwhile, Luciana did not stop laughing.
"You know, I like the way you actually stress her out", Luciana giggled, "did you see the way you were so confused right now even as he was just joking?"
Jessie's face cringed up, "so now again he comfortably made her feel embarrassed? What was just wrong with this guy", she wondered.
"Lucy.. so I'm now your object of ridicule", Jessie protested, "I'm disappointed".
"I'm sorry again", Luciana pouted.
"You just enjoy saying sorry, just leave me", Jessie huffed at Luciana.
"You are making me feel so guilty now", Luciana said in a really low voice.
Remembering she had an unresolved issue with Charles, "Charles, I am sorry for acting in displeasure earlier when I was supposed to be thanking you for bringing us back safe. I am really sorry and I hope you can forgive me.", Luciana begged with sincere remorse.
"It is fine, who said I felt bad about what you said. It is really normal to act that way, besides, you are females so it is okay to not feel comfortable in every place", Charles stated, "but I'll just say you should try to not drink much at every party. We really can't trust everyone these days", he divulged.
"That's true....", the two girls said simultaneously in a jinx, paused then laughed. Charles just smiled admiring the way they related, really it was rare to see such close friends. He was certain they weren't related by blood as they had a lot of physical differences.
"Okay, you can go first", Jessie said to Luciana.
"No, you go", Luciana smiled back.
After little hesitation, Jessie agreed and went on, "Charles, I know you met me in a very wrong state, even as I can't remember exactly why I was that way. I don't know if I said anything stupid, so I'll like to know if I did", Jessie said, "can you please tell me what happened when you saw me?", Jessie pressed on.
Charles who never expected the question from her, kept quiet for a few minutes. His actions only made Jessie feel nervous, as she thought she had said something too personal. "You said a few personal things", Charles divulged, "but I really don't feel like telling you", he lied.
From the conversation they had when she was drunk, Jessie did not say anything that was really personal, even the few words she muttered in grief did not give him a point about the pain she felt. He just enjoyed that she will be kept in suspense, since he observed she was an overthinker. He was going to have fun watching her make assumptions, he smirked.
