Chapter 29: I am Resigning

**Vincent**

“You lied to me." I said to her immediately after Davis locked the door behind her.

"In what way?”
"You said you came back yesterday and that you weren't in the hospital all through.”

She didn't say anything, her feet now seemed to be really interesting because she kept looking at her toe.

“I believe I was talking to you." I said.
She lifted up her head and looked me straight in the eyes before her throat bobbed up and down and she looked away again.

Is she scared? It's obvious on her face that she's nervous, I only asked a question, right?
“Michelle?" I called out.

"I'm sorry I lied.” She mumbled, looking up eventually.
So she stayed with me all through yesterday.

“Why did you lie then?” I asked her.
"No reason, I only said the first thing that came to my mind.” She replied plainly.

“Really?" I curled up an eyebrow.
“Yes." She replied while tapping her leg on the floor as though she was in a hurry.

“You can leave, I'll talk to her.” He told me.

She turned around to leave without saying anything. I needed no soothsayer to tell me that she was angry.

“Michelle." I called.
She didn't react immediately but turned around eventually.

“Are you okay?" I asked her.
“Of course, I'm fine." That response was so automated that it sounds so untrue.

“Your face is white though, it looks like you just saw a ghost.”
And it's written all over her that something is wrong somewhere.

Something in me was telling me to just keep shut like I always do, but I fought against that voice for the first time ever. I just wanted to go with the flow.

She frowned at first, looking lost on what I just said before a blank look came up on her face.

“I’m okay.”
I reclined on the chair and adjusted the eyeglasses on my face and let out a huge breath.

“Have your seat." I said as I pointed at the chair towards me with my jaw.

“I don't think that's the next thing for me to do now, I still have a lot of things to do.” She shook her head and said something under her breath ‘All thanks to you.’

If she thinks I didn't hear that, then she's just outright funny because it wasn't near quiet. Or she actually wants me to hear it.

“I'm not going to take much of your time."
She sat down on the chair like I told her to, staring directly at me.

“Is this about what happened in the morning?"
She didn't say anything, her face looks more relaxed now, giving it away that it's the reason.

I ran my hand through my hair in frustration. It's only morning and I'm already feeling this frustrated. I knew it was going to be all sh*tty the moment I got here to see my secretary still here.

“I guess I needed to let-"
‘So what now, you'll tell her how weak you are. Only weak men feel vulnerable! Don't explain yourself to her!’ that voice in my head screamed.

And just like a switch, I went from trying to explain myself to being all stone cold again.

“It was nothing actually, you can leave."
Her eyes widened in shock and her mouth parted ways in disbelief.

"You aren't going to say anything?” She asked after just staring at me in disbelief for some time.

“There's nothing to say." I replied plainly, already gathering some documents I wanted to work on. I turned on the laptop before me too.

The scraping of a chair against the hardwood of my office floor made me look up again.

“F*ck you, Vincent." She was out of the office before I could say ‘jack’. I turned my chair around and I was looking out the window instead.

My blood felt like it was rushing all through my body, I looked out of the window for some time, just trying to forget everything that just happened and getting lost in the scenery for five minutes.

Everything that happened this morning when I got to work played out in my head once more.

“Good morning sir." Molly had greeted me when I got to work.

“What are you still doing here?" My voice sounded too relaxed, but the expression on my face made her lips quiver.

“Uh, my mom said she talked to your mom and she said I could continue working." She replied with a shaky voice.

My blood boiled furiously, my jaw clenched so hard that I heard the sound myself.

“I fired you and you think whatever sh*t my mother told you is more superior than mine?" I almost growled.

Each second I used to see her face made me even more angry as I only got reminded that my mom did command her to defy me.

“She- she said she'll talk to you.” She stuttered.
"Leave. My. F*cking. Premises. Now.”

Her face widened and she didn't move at first, as though I didn't say anything.

“Now!" I roared.
She ran out of the cubicle immediately and rushed back to pick her bag and phone.

Immediately she left, I sent a text message to the woman who calls herself my mother.

‘The next time you interfere in my work matters, I'm going to take your last business from you.’

I didn't wait for her reply to the message, I blocked her message after the message was delivered and she was typing.

Remembering that made my fists curl up in anger again. The therapist I started seeing months ago had said I needed to let go of some things and change some things about myself.

Though I stopped seeing her as I saw what she said as crap, I went ahead to start doing those things weeks ago. Maybe it's just better if I stayed the same way i was before.

I felt the need to let off some steam or I'm going to explode.

I swiveled around back to leave the office when my door was opened and Michelle came in after knocking once.

“I'm resigning."
