Chapter Twenty Eight

Natalie POV

I was trying to hold back my tears from falling. I had promised myself not to display any indication of weakness from his words, but it was impossible. They had stuck really deep through my heart, like a sword

"I appreciate your worry, Bruce," I responded, my tone remaining strong even though I was in turmoil. "I would like it if you could respect my choice. Tristan and I have come to an understanding, and we will take care of our personal matters."

Bruce's expression became more gentle as he grasped the situation, and he hesitantly nodded in agreement. "Okay, Natalie. If that is your wish. Just be aware that I will be here for you if you need someone to talk to or if things become overwhelming."

I gave him a slight smile, appreciative of his backing. "Thanks, Bruce. I appreciate our friendship and I have confidence in you."

Tristan stayed quiet, his eyes locked on me. I observed a range of feelings dancing in his eyes - ridicule, delight, and an emotion I couldn't understand completely.

I needed to ask for clarification of what he meant. I had stated no need for disrespect and I was going to stand on that.

As the tension eased down, I was brought to the reality that all Tristan cared about was honouring the contract. The statement he had made earlier showed he never cares about me.

Why did he even need to care anyways.? He was never going to fall in love.

Feeling saddened, I stepped away from the table. "I need a breath of fresh air, I will be back soon."

Without waiting for a reply, I quickly exited the restaurant, seeking the comfort of the night to collect my thoughts.

The refreshing breeze gently touched my face, giving me a brief break from the chaos within me.

The happenings of the evening had forced me to accept the reality that I was entangled in a web of feelings I hadn't expected.

I couldn't disregard the painful words he said, the heartless disregard for my emotions. It was evident that Tristan had his own motives for maintaining this relationship as a professional, I couldn't just help but hate the feeling of lack of empathy involved.

My mind wandered so much that I didn't see Tristan coming until he was right next to me, the silence heavy with things unsaid.

"What is the matter with you? Are you not going to accept the truth?" He asked.

"What are you referring to?" I asked, after a moment of silence, taking in his question.

"Do you find it unexpected that I have no feelings for you? I am a very observant young lady and your actions are simply telling me all that I need to know. It is evident that something regarding this contract is affecting you. Why else will you be out here?"

"I simply needed fresh air." I tried to dismiss his statement, even though it was true.

"Very well then... We need to start going through your mannerism before my mother, when she comes. Let's state the rules clearly, when you are with her." He requested.

"What are the rules?"

"Let's go inside and we will talk."

Tristan guided me back into the restaurant with confidence.

While we stepped into the restaurant, everyone's gaze fell upon us, but Tristan wouldn't care about them.

We found a quiet spot in the restaurant, shielded from curious onlookers and attentive listeners.

"Natalie, you must understand this. Our agreement is solely based on transactions. We are not present for romantic or love-related matters. I have clearly emphasised that from the start."

I took a deep breath, sensing the pain of his words hitting me hard. His aloofness and conceit hurt me deeply, yet I was determined not to let it shatter me. I lifted my posture, summoning the courage to look directly into his eyes.

"Okay," I responded, my voice calm yet tinged with a touch of rebellion. "However, Bruce is correct. Your cruelty cannot be excused by this. Tristan, just because we've agreed on something doesn't mean you can disregard my emotions.

Tristan wore a smug smirk on his lips, with his eyes shining with a cold satisfaction. "Emotions? Natalie, that mistake is yours. Feelings are not welcome in our agreement. It is a deal that benefits all parties involved. Remember to not forget that."

His words hit me hard, serving as a painful acknowledgment of the harsh truth of our current situation. However, deep down inside, a spark of rage started to grow within me. I declined to be diminished to just a pawn in his scheme, discarded whenever it was convenient for him.

"Tristan, you might believe you have complete power. But I will not allow you to brush me off with such ease. I am not just a transaction; I am something more. I have my own wishes and goals, and I won't be quieted by your pride." I replied with a newfound determination

Tristan's eyes widened for a moment in surprise when I suddenly resisted him. He leaned into the puzzle before him, his gaze intensifying as if he was trying to decipher its secrets. "Don’t you dare stand up to me, Natalie?" "You've forgotten your place."

I remained defiant, refusing to avoid his gaze. I won't let you determine my worth or control my emotions. I feel like a puppet at their mercy. I have to give my opinion.

"What's the point of this?" Bruce is really helping you level up, but I don't know where to go.

"You're the only authority and have no interest in my feelings... you're rude, vain and inconsiderate."

"It's like you never complained until you fell in love." "I don't have feelings for you," I said.

"Really?" "Let's try."
