Chapter 59 - Unexpected Good News

"Clang--"
I was crying loudly in William's arms when the heavy pounding on the door behind me caught my attention.
Moving away from William's arms, I turned my head to look behind me.
Damon's face was ironic, his fiery red hair obscuring his eyes so that I couldn't see the emotion in them.
I just stood there, staring blankly at Damon, tears still running down the corners of my eyes.
Damon stumbled forward two steps, and William rushed to shield me behind him.
I didn't dodge and stayed frozen in place.
Damon saw William's movement and stopped in his tracks, standing equally still as we just looked at each other, and finally he turned and walked away.
William stepped in front of me and I could no longer see Damon at all.
Finally, William led me to his office and sat me in the seat for a long time to calm down.
Only after I had gradually stabilized did William speak up and tell me about Eric's condition.
"I think you still need to prepare yourself mentally."
William looked at me with a worried look on his face, and I could already hear in William's tone that the news he was about to bring me was bad news.
I looked at him blankly, not sure what kind of expression I was capable of making after all the mood swings I'd experienced in the middle of the day, or maybe I even felt numb to it.
"There's not much time left, and we need to find the appropriate organ as quickly as possible."
William said this very politely, and I still caught the message he was trying to convey to me.
Tears were running down the corners of my eyes again and I could no longer see what was in front of me and kept wiping my eyes, trying hard to see William clearly.
I refuse to believe what he says.
Grabbing William's arm, my voice was sad, "Aren't you the best doctor here, William I beg you, help him! Eric is just a 10 year old, he doesn't even get to go to school and run around with kids his age."
The more I talked, the more excited I got, a wave of vertigo went through my brain, and black images appeared before my eyes several times.
William steadied me and gently patted my back, his voice tired but still gentle and possessing a reassuring strength.
"With me, I will use the power of the family to help Eric find a suitable organ."
William gave me a soothing look.
With his reassurance and my emotions finally regaining their composure, I also found my sanity.
"Thank you William." I thanked William sincerely.
Without William, I really shudder to think if I would have actually broken down.
"Selena, I'm a doctor and I'm not going to give up on any of my patients, not to mention that Eric is your brother and I like him a lot." William said to me as he looked at me seriously.
I fought back the tears that came tumbling down again, the constant shaking of my hand holding William giving away my suppressed emotions.
"Go back and rest, I'm here, don't worry."
William walked me to my car, waved at me, and barked at Alexander, who was driving.
Alexander acted as a driver to get me back to the estate and Jenny stayed behind to help me look after Eric at the hospital.
"You shouldn't feel too bad, I've also found a few organs that might be suitable before through my family's connections, I just haven't told you about it because I haven't settled on it."
Alexander turned his head and looked at me and whispered.
I stared at Alexander with wide eyes and disbelief.
In the earliest days when Alexander said he would help me find matching resources, I thought those were just words, but I never thought he would actually do it.
"I can't thank you enough, you and William have been my saviors and Eric's."
I clenched my hands, my body trembling a little.
"It's just that, without a completed match, there's no certainty that it's a good fit for Eric." Alexander said with a frown.
I opened my mouth to say something when Alexander spoke up and interrupted me.
"And, the other party needs to see full payment, as well as some deposit up front."
Alexander looked at me with difficulty, as if he was blaming himself for not helping me.
"Alexander, how much is needed, and I have some savings for now." I looked at him sincerely.
"One hundred thousand dollars in full, with a twenty thousand dollar deposit to be paid to them in advance."
The amount Alexander stated shocked me and I looked at him, a little speechless for a moment.
Even though I have so much money now, when I pay for that, there won't be enough money to pay for the surgery.
I fell into silence, not knowing for a moment what to do.
"I thought the price was high too, but it was the fairest price I could find."
"I'm sorry, that's the only resource I'm capable of finding."
Alexander's tone was light, as if he was kicking himself for not being able to find a cheaper price.
I looked down at my hands and was struggling frantically inside.
Alexander just watched me quietly, unprompted, and sat there very still.
After a long time, I finally let go of my hands and compromised the request Alexander had made.
"Yes, but I'll have to go along when the deal is made."
Alexander's expression quivered slightly when he heard that I was going along, but I didn't care.
"It's not impossible, it's just that it's rather confusing there, and your current clothes still don't quite fit, so let me take you back to your apartment to change!"
Alexander reluctantly agreed to my request and drove back to mine and Jenny's apartment as fast as he could.
I changed into a simpler workout outfit, put up a high ponytail, and put on a mask and hat to make myself look less conspicuous.
Before going to the appointed place, Alexander found a bank and cashed my check for $100,000.
Alexander led me through the streets of the slums, my heart tense as I carried the suitcase with the money in my hands, the sweat rising from my palms, making the suitcase carrying handle very sticky.
Finally, we stopped in front of a dimly lit house.
All around them were cluttered items, and the stench from the sewage on the floor made Jean carry the box with the money in one hand and cover her nose with the other.
"This is it." Alexander stood in the courtyard, and he called out for a long time without an answer.
The occasional cawing of crows all around me made me even more uneasy as I moved closer towards Alexander's side.
"Or we'd better go ahead and make an appointment to meet in a setting we're more familiar with."
I forced myself to calm down and said to Alexander, but the slight tremble in my voice still betrayed the nervousness I was feeling right now.
