Chapter 61: A Deal with Your Parents
"Even if the recording comes to light, there's no problem?" My hands clenched into fists and my head bowed deeply.
I really didn't think that a father could really be so desperate, that he could say so easily to give up in the face of the child he had raised, a living life.
My father was silent, and the whole study was filled with see tension.
"Selena, just so you know I have a hundred ways to fix the recording."
My father slowly turned around, and he looked at me with an icy gaze, as if he were looking at a stranger, without any emotion.
"Vincent, I have an idea." My mother was standing in the doorway of the study at some point, holding the door to the room, her eyes glaring at my father and me, her cheeks having an unnatural flush.
I looked at my mother with unease in my heart, and she looked at me with a very soft gaze, as if to say to reassure me.
I was amazed at my mother's attitude and wanted to know more about her solution.
"Do you remember William?" Mother said to Father.
"That Morgan family kid? The one who ran off to become a doctor at the hospital instead of taking over the family estate?" Father didn't seem to have much good will when he heard William's name and frowned slightly.
Clearly, in his father's eyes, only the sons and daughters who could inherit the family were worthy of his friendship.
"Yes, he proposed like I did a while ago that he wanted to get engaged to Selena." Mother went to her father's side and helped him polish his monocle.
I heard my mother mention William and my whole body stiffened, I already had a feeling of all the things that were about to happen behind me, but what could I do against the power of two families?
"I don't think he's qualified, let alone the fact that he's now the kid's primary care physician." It was clear that my father didn't think much of William, which relieved me to see that I was still very nervous.
"You mustn't forget that his sister is engaged to Damon." Mother reminded.
Though her voice was soft, the words were like a thousand pounds of boulders pressing down on my chest, making me gasp.
My father pondered for a moment before saying to me, "If you want the family to help Eric, then accept William's proposal of marriage and I will be able to do what I can to give you some help."
I just stood there in the middle of the study, every word of my father's words passing clearly into my ears.
Although the study seemed very calm on the surface, I could feel that unseen storm of fury.
I was silent, and I even wondered if Sophie's marriage was also a family arranged union.
It makes me hate being a noble so much, it gives me no leeway at all to choose my own life.
I tightened my grip on my skirt, not sure exactly how I was going to respond.
"Selena, think about it, he's Eric's primary care doctor and future heir to the Morgan family, you won't have to worry about Eric's treatment from now on, am I right?" My mother walked up to me and grabbed one of my hands with both of hers, patting the back of my hand.
Her soft tone of voice, as well as her gentle gestures, all made me feel for a moment as if I were a child, and the mother who doted on us so much had reappeared once again.
I remained silent, I couldn't make up my mind.
I have to admit that at this moment my mind is actually thinking about Damon when my brother is at a critical point in his life, and I feel ashamed of my selfishness.
But again, there was nothing I could do but compromise in order to be able to save Eric.
"I need $150,000, and I also need the power of the family to help me find the right organ for Eric."
I slowly lifted my head and my gaze grew firm as I drew my hand back from my mother's and dropped both hands into fists at my side.
"That's not possible." My father heard my request and rejected me decisively.
"That's where I draw the line, or I won't agree to it." I looked straight at my father, not backing down in the slightest.
"Vincent!" Mother called out to her father, and she walked quickly to his side, whispering something to him, and finally he didn't look very good, but nodded.
"Alright, I'll grant your request, your engagement will wait until after Sophie's wedding, well you can go out now."
My father waved his hand, his body suddenly much hunched over and the look of exhaustion on his face very evident.
My mother, on the other hand, looked at me with a tender face and a lot of helplessness in her eyes.
I took a deep look at the two of them and finally turned to walk away.
I ran into Grimm on the way back to my room and Grimm smiled and greeted me, while I wasn't even in any mood to pay him any mind.
I buried myself under the covers, my mind kept repeating everything I had experienced today, and I felt like I was almost going to explode, that so many changes could have happened in just one day.
I heard a knock on the door outside, but I didn't even want to pay attention to it, and the person outside the door couldn't hear my response and opened the door herself.
"Selena, I heard Grimm say you were in a bad mood, is something going on?"
Sophie's voice rang out above my head and I remained buried under the covers, not wanting to talk or converse.
More than that, I didn't know how I was going to face my kind sister, and couldn't imagine
"Selena, we're sisters right, if there's a problem we can solve it together." Sophie yanked me out from under the covers and looked at me seriously.
"Oh my god, what's going on with your forehead?" Sophie looked at me in surprise, her hands covering her lips as she let out a gasp.
I looked at her in demoralization and finally recounted all the events of the day to her.
"In fact, a large portion of the medical bills I supported you with regarding Eric over the previous year were secretly given to me by my mother."
Sophie I took my hand, her voice softly recounting.
I looked at her incredulously, "But she's acting so fed up with Eric."
"But she's also Eric's mother isn't she? You know she's always been soft-hearted and she can't stop the decisions her father makes, she can only help us in this way."
I've had a lot of shocks one after the other today and I haven't been able to end it until now.
When I think of how I used to treat my mother, I don't know how I'm going to face her after that.
"Selena, don't think too much, mother she will understand you, you still have your family and Eric is my brother, let's face everything together, okay?"
