The Fight
If he wasn't somewhat, in a way only Roman knew how, smiling, I'd have been offended.
I glared at him. "You're such an asshole sometimes."
We scowled at each other in silence. Ten minutes later he finally spoke.
He smirked. "I'm at a disadvantage here."
Surprise filtered on my face. "You are?"
"Why, yes!" He grabbed his keys, cell phone and cigarette lighter from the kitchen counter. "You've seen my asshole. But I haven't a clue what yours looks like."
"I didn't mean it like that."
"How did you mean it then, Sugar?"
I couldn't be sure whether Sugar referred to my fake last name or an endearment. Either way, blood rushed to my cheeks.
He opened the door for me and closed it behind him and took me under his big brown umbrella as we walked out into the harsh wind and acidic rain. I swallowed the lump in my throat and tried to act as normal as I could.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, it seemed, two men rolled down towards us, they were throwing punches at each other. I had never a fight so terrifying before, at least not in real life, this looked like a scene from an action movie between the villain and hero. With my heart in my throat, I realized they were trying to kill each other. They had unusual eyes, golden. Their faces seemed to be hairy and they moved so fast, they were but a blur. Partially shifting was a gift only bestowed into the Alpha bloodline. These were his brothers.
"Roman, do something!"
"You're trespassing," he told the two boys. He sounded like a man from a different era, a man who would've been riding horses through thick forests, rescuing damsels and fighting foreigners off his land.
I stared at him, outraged. "That's all you're going to...say? Seriously?"
He shrugged. "I am not leaving the comfort and shelter of the umbrella to break off two idiots who choose to fight about God knows what."
"Then take the umbrella with you," I urged. "They'll kill each other."
"No, they won’t. They’d need more than just fangs and talons for nails to kill each other."
"You're such an asshole," I said more to myself.
He sighed and handed me the umbrella and stalked off towards the tangled streak of blonde and black hair. He easily got the two separated.
Roman glared at the downpour. "I fucking hate the rain." And then he shifted his gaze to the two guys. "Just what do you think you're doing in my yard? Doesn't it clearly —"
He stopped dead as the black-haired twin struggled against his hold and the blond managed to sneak a fist that accidentally knocked Roman's cigarette to the soaked ground.
My eyes bulged as I noticed that Roman stiffened and pinched the bridge of his nose. He balled his hands into fists and punched the black-haired guy so hard he fell onto the ground. When the guy, not much different from Roman, got to his feet, he ran and disappeared into the forest. I could’ve sworn I heard his bones breaking as he ran. The second he disappeared, a lone cry of a wolf filled the air.
Roman wasted no time and slapped the blonde guy, the poor guy trembled in terror and the second Roman let go of his collar he ran the hell out of there.
"I hope they charge you with assault," I was saying, running up to him so that the rain would stop clinging his shirt against his body. That was messing with my thoughts.
"That was my last cigarette."
I rolled my eyes. "Don't you mean Anton's last cigarette? You don't even smoke," I said. "... And besides, it was soaked anyway from standing in the rain."
He smirked. "Oh, I know."
"Then why in the world would you beat them up?"
"To make sure they go straight home." He shrugged, "They were going to continue fighting."
"How would you know that?"
"I know everything, in case you haven't noticed."
"Oh fuck you, Roman."
His hand wrapped around my neck, warm and rough, his touch was familiar to me in a bizarre way.
He lowered his head to my ear and whispered, "No, fuck you." He nibbled my ear lobe. "Whichever way you want. I prefer missionary or I could take you in the shower. Gives me the control I crave and you... I'll give you the pleasure you'll never get anywhere else." His voice made my heart pause it's beat. It was deeper than normal.
"But if you prefer to take the wheel, prefer to ride me then by all means, Nuru, do fuck me."
He kissed a trail from my neck to the corner of my lips. "Hmm, you're quite kissable, Nuru." He moved away from me and walked towards his car.
"You coming?" he continued walking as he spoke.
I looked up at him with a dumbfounded face. Really? Had he seriously expect me to be able to walk properly after that?
"Juliet?"
I didn't even try to take the first step. I knew my steps would be wobbly, mix that with the slippery road, then I'd fall face first on the ground.
He walked towards me, his eyes concerned.
"I don't remember Juliet ever ignoring Romeo."
I rolled my eyes.
He sighed with impatience and cradled me against his chest. He placed me in the passenger seat, when I made no move to pull the seat belt around me, he sighed again and strapped me in.
"I'm curious about something," he said, having no difficulty driving in the gloom and rain.
"Yeah?" My voice was still weak, but my heart was gradually calming to a normal pace.
"What's wrong with you?" he asked instead.
I looked up at him to see if he was teasing, but his eyes were serious, a frown drawn deep in his forehead. Did he seriously not know the power he'd just unleashed on me?
I cleared my throat, "Nothing."
He paused, and for a brief moment his magical eyes were strangely interested.
