CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
"Are you just going to sit here and do nothing? " Mabel asked Jack.
" What do you want me to do? He has already made up his mind"
"You are not even going to put up a fight? Is that how much you fear him? You rather suffer in silence than fight for what is yours"
" You don't know my father the way I do"
" So you are telling me that your father is the kind of person that will leave his son and grandchild to suffer"
" I don't know "
" Then go and meet him, I'm sure he is waiting for you at the office," Mabel said sweetly.
" You think so? "
" I do" she pecked Jack on the lips.
" Ok, I will go"
Mabel waited till Jack left. She was tired of acting. She wanted him to leave the house, so she could pack her bags and leave.
She didn't care if Jack would end up getting a position in the office later on. She believed that if she stayed any longer, he would only weigh her down.
She was going to accept the side character role that the Director had offered her. It wasn't much, but at least it was enough for her until she found another person to leach off from.
Meanwhile, Jack went to his father's company with the hope that he would be able to bring good news back to Mabel.
He silently prayed that his father wouldn't turn a blind eye to him.
For the first time in Jack's life, he felt self-conscious because of the stares he got. Usually, people stared at him with adoration and envy but now he didn't know if they felt pity for him or they judged him.
He made his way up to his father's office. His father's secretary nodded at him as if he was permitting him to enter his father's office.
"Good morning father," Jack said and bowed his head low.
"How may I help you?"
"About yesterday..." Jack began to say,
"Don't bother. What's done is done"
"Who is he?"
Although Mrs. Griffon had already told him, he still wanted to hear it from his father's mouth.
"My son"
"Where did he come from?" Jack asked.
"That's not important"
"Why did you give him my position?"
"It was never yours"
"I was your only son, it was originally supposed to be mine"
"Is that what your mother told you?"
"..."
"Even if I didn't have another son. I would have found someone more responsible to take over for me"
"You didn't even give me a chance to show you that I can manage the business"
"Stop acting like I'm the bad guy. You know full well that when my mind is set on something, I won't change it. Tell me the reason why you are here"
"Are you really just going to abandon me and leave me on the street?"
"You are old enough to fend for yourself. If you want money then say it, stop beating around the bush"
Jack gulped.
" You know that Mabel is pregnant and I will be a father soon. I need the money to take care of the baby and Mabel"
"Stop giving excuses"
" Yes father"
" Meet my secretary, he will give you a check"
" Thank you father, you wouldn't regret this, I promise you" Jack stood up to leave.
" One more thing. whatever misunderstanding you have with your mother, clear it up. I'm sure she needs you"
" I'm afraid I can't do that father, I have already cut ties with her"
" If that's what you want then I won't force you. Hurry and leave I have more important matters to take care of"
Jack happily took the check from the secretary. The money wasn't so much but it was enough to start a little business.
Mr. Griffon's secretary came into the office.
" What's next sir?" The secretary asked.
" Watch his every move, no details exempted"
" Understood"
Jack searched for his phone, but he couldn't find it anywhere. He wanted to call Mabel and tell her the good news, but it looked like he left it at home.
He will just have to wait till he got home.
...
Ring
Ring
Ring
Jack's phone continuously rang on the kitchen counter. The noise it produced annoyed Mabel so much, that she wanted to smash it with a hammer.
She was ready to leave. She didn't want Jack to meet her because she knew he would not let her leave.
She glanced at the screen to see who the scoundrel, that didn't know when to stop calling, is.
It was Jack's mother.
"I guess you don't know when to give up, huh"
She accepted the call.
" Hello, Jack are you there"
Mrs. Griffon could only hear heavy breathing. However, she continued to talk.
" I miss you so much Jack, please come home to me"
"..."
" Mummy loves you, You know that. I promise you that I had nothing to do with last night" She sobbed and Mabel rolled her eyes.
What a drama queen, Mabel thought.
" Please forgive me"
Mabel laughed out loud.
" Who is this?" Mrs. Griffon asked.
" It's me, your darling daughter-in-law, who you adore so much"
" Where is Jack?"
" In bed"
" Why are you with his phone?"
" Geez, you ask so many questions. Now, let's talk about you instead. Don't you know when to give up?"
" I won't give up until my son is with me, where he belongs"
Mabel laughed out again.
" Do you really think you can win against me?"
" What do you mean by that?"
" Your son rather stays with me than be stranded with you"
" That's not true"
" Believe it or not, you have no idea how much Jack despises you"
" You are lying, where is my son?"
" Yesterday he wished so much that you would just drop dead and go to hell" Mabel lied.
" No" Mrs. Griffon sobbed.
" You know what I think, he was right. Maybe you should die. Nobody needs a pathetic mother like you"
" Please tell me you are lying" Mrs. Griffon begged.
" Just face it, woman. He doesn't need you in his life anymore. He has me"
" You can talk to him for me, right? He will listen to you" Mrs. Griffon desperately said.
" Fuck you" Mabel hung up the call.
