New story - Chapter One

"The Best graduating student this year is..." The school dean paused, and with a bright smile on his face, he continued.
"Aaliyah Katherine Carter" I could hear my sister who was snickering beside me. Even though it was expected, I still hoped that she was going to take it likely.
" Stupid bitch" she spat out with her fists clenched.
I was hesitant to respond to my name being called, as the crowd applauded and cheered for me. I hated attention, more than I hated myself.
With the time I wasted, my name was repeatedly called, and each time the crowd's uproar was louder than the previous. I had no choice but to go.
I nervously climbed up the stage and with every step I took my heart beat sped faster. The dean put out his hand for me to shake, which I did.
"Congratulations," he said to me with a grin on his face. I mouthed a thank you to him as my response.
He gave me a mini box, I wonder what could be inside. I guess I will have to find out later.
I was about to leave but then his words stopped me.
"That's not all," he said into his microphone and everyone suddenly went silent.
"Not only did she graduate as the best student, but she also caught the attention of one of the most prestigious families in the country" Everyone became curious, including me. What sort of trouble have I gotten myself into now, I questioned.
"The king family," he said again leaving everyone shocked and speechless.
"She has been offered an internship at their company, and after three months she will become an official employee. King himself has recognized this little institution as a great investment for raising more students like her"
How could that be? This university was in the rural part of the city. And it wasn't even a popular one.
This is not good at all. My eyes instantly Locked with my sister's, it was burning in hatred, but right now she was the least of my worries.
My mother was standing in a corner with her friends praising her for raising such a brilliant daughter and I could tell that she was liking all the attention she was getting.
The smug smirk on her face sent chills down my spine, I already knew that my plans had been ruined.
There was no way that she was going to let me go as she promised. I had planned to leave my home a week after I graduated but I guess that won't be possible anymore.
Her love for money has far surpassed the love that she had for me, her daughter. My happiness was nothing to her, I am nothing to her.
Once again the dean congratulated me. It shows by the way that he looked at me, he was very satisfied and happy. Today was the first time I had ever seen him smile. He is usually a very bitter man.
I made my way back to where I sat but my sister was no longer there, Thank God. At least I didn't have to face her just yet.
As time went on I grew bored and tired. It was supposed to be a very cheerful day for me but it was suffocating.
So many fake smiles were directed toward me. I hated it, I prefer not to be acknowledged by anyone.
I need some fresh air and some time alone to think.
I made my way towards the exit and I was abruptly stopped by my mother.
"Where are you going, my love?" She said sweetly. The tone she used made me cringe.
"Out Mother" I gave her a reply with my head facing down. It's how I was raised to respond to her.
I wasn't allowed to look her directly in the face. I always wondered why my sister was allowed to but not me. Then again my sister was spoiled rotten by my mother while I was given the harshest treatment.
"What do you mean out? You still have to stick around for the after party" she said with a slight hint of anger.
"Please Mother, I am feeling unwell and I would like to leave this place," I said daring her to say no.
In front of the other parents, she was the perfect mother and she wasn't going to destroy that image because of a mere request.
"Fine," she said without pushing the matter further and she returned to her friends.
The thought of letting go of my freedom made me almost cry, but the delicious smell of freshly baked pastries from my favorite cafe cheered me up.
"I am coming my babies," I said with a smile on my face.
I was too distracted by the mouth-watering smell of donuts that I didn't notice the manly figure heading towards me at a quick pace. It didn't help that he was also not paying attention, he was looking at his phone and holding a cup of coffee in his other hand.
Before I knew it my skin felt a burning sensation. He looked shocked because of the impact and once he saw the painful expression on my face, he immediately discarded the contents he was holding.
He took my hand and brought it closer to his face as he carefully examined my new injuries.
"I sincerely apologize for what I have done to you," He said.
And I nodded assuring him that it was okay.
" How do I make it up to you?" He asked.
What an intriguing man. Even though he sounded apologetic, there wasn't an ounce of emotion on his face. He reminded me of my mother, I would have to stay away from him if I ever meet him in the future. I can't have a second mother in my life.
I was about to tell him not to worry about it but someone beat me to it.
"Mr.King, what's taking so long? The meeting" The unknown stranger said.
" Here take this, contact me and I will pay for your treatment," he said handing me a black card before he disappeared.
I silently read the contents of the letter. King huh? The man who has now unknowingly ruined my life.
