Chapter 26

***Alpha Ethan***

I manage to avoid Alicent until the afternoon, which should be easier given the size of the packhouse, but now I run into her again as my sister floats from room to room to give her and her little brat son the grand tour around the house. Although he follows his mother protectively, the boy seems to be more fascinated by the packhouse itself, probably because his senses may be telling him that everyone around him is a werewolf.
I’m lounging in one of the grand living rooms, sunk into a velvet armchair next to my Beta. Above us, glass accents glint in the soft, ambient lighting while sleek marble floors stretch out beneath our feet. From here, I can easily see down the wide hallway, thanks to the open-concept layout that connects everything. I also can hear Vi’s excited voice mingling with the soft rustle of their footsteps through the open space as she proudly showcases every feature around, pointing out some details about the packhouse and our family. Of course, Vi leaves aside the fact that we are werewolves.
I haven’t had a conversation with Vi about Alicent yet, but she’s already being all protective of her new friend. I watch her grin while she tells Alicent some stories about when she was a little girl. Vi seems happy until my Gamma, her mate, walks by.
My sister’s smile loses a bit of its brightness when she sees him arrive before. Once she introduces Jordan to Alicent, she completely ignores her fated mate, and he comes over to me. They must have fought again.
I study Alicent. I know she’s hiding something. Every time she enters a new room that my sister shows her, Little Dove’s eyes suddenly search for the nearest exit. That isn’t the behavior of someone who has nothing to hide. I can sense it. My instinct makes me suspicious about her, and it’s never failed me before.
Alicent points to a photo on the wall of Violet and me as children, but what stands out to me is how slender and bony her raised arm appears.
She is already tiny. Too tiny. She is definitely underweight. She needs to eat healthier and more frequently. ‘I think your friend must be hungry. Since she doesn’t have a place to crash, she most likely doesn’t have money to go anywhere to grab a bite, either.’ I mindlink to Vi, and abruptly her eyes meet mine with a subtle glare. But then I hear Vi declare her hunger and demand that Alicent join her. I smirk a bit at her subtlety.
“Ethan?”
Observing my ploy unfold, I watch Alicent and my sister making their way towards the kitchen. It is when she turns then that I notice Alicent’s dark hair is braided to the side, and I find myself admiring her braid for a fleeting moment.
“Alpha?”
I think it’s cool. Her braid is cute, but that’s all. Just the braid. And I only think it’s cute because ever since I was a kid, I have thought girls looked pretty with braids.
“Should I go or not?”
“Ethan?”
“What?” I snap. I get angrier than I should, but sometimes I just can’t stand Jordan.
“I asked you if I should go to the Moonlight or not,” Jordan says, sitting next to Josh. “The new shipment will arrive later, and neither you nor Vi will be there.”
Something about Jordan’s aura makes me hesitate. This woman and her stupid bright aura are messing with my fucking senses! It’s all her fault. “I’m waiting for Seth to mindlink me. Once he gets back to me, I’ll make up my mind. Maybe I have to go there.” Well, I don’t really have to go to Moonlight, especially since I just got back. However, I do see the value in going because then I can avoid being near Alicent.
What the hell am I thinking? I’m the Alpha of this fucking place.
“On second thought, go,” I firmly say, changing my mind.
“Shall I take two Omegas with me?” Jordan asks as he stands up.
Across the living room, my sister pauses in their tracks and shows Alicent a painting that Lily, her and Jordan’s daughter, made before they continue their way to the kitchen.
I answer Jordan by nodding without looking at him as I stare at Alicent’s ass the entire time. She glances in my direction before quickly looking away.
Fuck, I’m getting hard again. She can’t look at me like that. Popping a boner in front of my Beta and Gamma is not my idea of a good time.
As soon as Jordan leaves, Josh teases, “Some little human is getting your panties in a bunch.”
I roll my eyes. Why is this man even my best friend? I have no clue, but I need to rethink this friendship. “Oh, there’s no point in denying it. I’ve seen the way you’ve been eye fucking eating her,” he quietly adds. She is still within our sight in the hallway, but she is too to hear us. Probably, even Vi didn’t hear what he said.
“It’s not like that. She’s human,” I say. “Vi shouldn’t have allowed her entry here before talking to me. She knows that.”
Just as Josh is about to respond, Kelly enters the adjoining living rooms and struts confidently toward me as if she’s walking down a runway at her workplace. Kelly fixes her gaze on me with an attempt at a sultry smile. She’s wearing a mini black dress with huge, gravity-defying high heels. She doesn’t spare a single glance or say hello to my sister on her way, and neither does my sister seem to care. However, Alicent turns to look back at Kelly, a little bit dazzled.
“You didn’t answer me yesterday, Alpha,” Kelly says, reminding me that I turned her down last night as she reached me. When she makes a move to sit on my lap, instead of letting her do so, I get up. But she moves even closer to me and before I know it, as I’m staring at a wide-eyed Alicent across the hall watching me, Kelly leans in and kisses me.
