Chapter 58
The white wolf starts to growl.
But the wolf doesn’t growl at me. Instead, its deep, rumbling growl is directed at literally nothing on the other side.
The wolf sniffs the air again, its nose twitching, and then the wolf growls, baring its sharp teeth in a menacing display in a more precise direction.
The initial shock of seeing a real wolf right in front of me fades, and noticing it isn’t acknowledging me, I begin to cautiously back away. My only thought is to avoid drawing its attention. The last thing I want is for its growl to shift toward me before it jumps out and sinks its teeth into me.
However, the wolf is smarter than I thought. As if sensing me, the white, furry wolf abruptly turns his head towards me, causing me to freeze again before it shifts its head and starts to growl at an unseen target again. With deliberate slowness, I slid my hand along the car door, aiming for the handle, hoping to open the door and escape this situation. The wolf, however, has different plans. It strides toward me, placing itself between me and whatever unseen danger it senses, acting as a guardian against a threat only it seems to be aware of because the stinking parking lot is empty.
“Pssp, pssp! That’s okay, sweet baby,” I baby-talk to the wolf. “You can stop growling now. Let me just—” I try to move, but it presses closer, its back against me. Its thick fur brushes my bare legs as the wolf traps me against the car.
I take a deep breath. Even though the animal is huge, I no longer feel the initial panic. I take my phone out of my pocket and send a message to Logan, saying that there is no one in the parking lot. As I type, I look at the wolf with its back to me. Who would believe me if I told them that something like this happened? I laugh to myself.
The wolf finally stops growling and focuses its attention on me, turning in my direction. For a moment, the white wolf looks as scared as I am as it stares at me. So I lean down a little and pet its head between its furry ears. “Such a cute little puppy!” I say. “Wow! Your fur is so soft and fluffy, baby boy!”
I feel my phone vibrate, so I pick it up, standing up again. I see that it’s a message from Logan, and as I read it, the wolf rubs his head against my hand as if asking me to continue petting him. I smile as I read the message while I pet his bright white head.
Oh, shoot. In Logan’s message, he tells me that the package is in the trunk of a black car parked at the building’s entrance.
I sigh. “Okay, sweet baby, I have to go now,” I smile at him. The furry puppy tilts his head to look at me, and when I start walking towards the building’s entrance, he starts following me. “No! You can’t follow me, cute puppy!” I say, but he ignores me, staying persistently close by my side, like a loyal guard dog, or rather, a loyal guard wolf.
As I get to the car with the license plate Logan gave me, I’m surprised to find the trunk open. I open it and grab the package. It’s not that heavy; it’s a brown box weighing a little over six pounds. I make my way back to Vi’s car, and the fluffy white wolf follows me.
The moment I swing open the driver’s door, the wolf darts ahead of me and jumps into the back seat. “No! No!” I say, opening the car’s back door right away so he can get out. “You can’t come with me!” The wolf’s white fur is so pristine and shiny that it’s obvious he has an owner. And his owner must be nearby. “Please, sweet baby! Be a good little boy! I have to go now! I’m late!” I shoo him out of the car, but the wolf simply turns his white head to the other window. “Gosh!” I close the back door. The cute little wolf is very stubborn. I didn’t know they were like that. I’m not sure if it was a wolf or a big dog, but the animal I saw with its leg caught in the Blackmoon’s fence was different. This one has something more confident about him, something I can’t put my finger on.
I get in the car and put on the seatbelt, looking at the white wolf in the backseat through the mirror. I narrow my eyes. “Okay, I’ll take you with me, but as soon as I deliver this package, sweet puppy, I’ll bring you back! I’m only taking you with me because I can’t stay here any longer. I have a good boy at home, and I already miss him.” I smile, remembering Az. “Aww, Az has green eyes just like you!” I turn the key and drive in the direction of Logan’s place. “I think Az would love to see you. Maybe I’ll take you with me!” I smile when the white wolf puts his head close to me and licks my cheek. “But on second thought, maybe it’s better to find your owner before you meet Az. Az would definitely get attached to you. You’re such a cute wolf! *I am* already starting to get attached!” Good Lord! It’s hard to concentrate on the road when you have a sweet little wolf by your side. That’s why I’m more than happy when I finally arrive at my destination.
I pull up to Logan’s house and park, and as soon as I step out, the fluffy white wolf follows me, clearly not wanting to stay inside. “Hey, come back here, sweet baby!” The furry puppy turns to me and tilts his head. “Fine. But you can’t run away, okay? I have to leave you where I found you after here,” I say, petting his head.
I head towards the door with the wolf by my side, and after knocking, Logan appears.
Staring at the white wolf, Logan’s eyes widen in alarm, and he takes a step back, his hand still gripping the door handle as though he’s about to shut it at any moment. “Allie! WHAT IS IT?”
“This little puppy? Someone’s pet.” I say, bending down and petting the wolf’s head. “He’s so cute! You don’t know how amazing this cute puppy is!”
“200 lbs isn’t a puppy! That’s a wolf! Allie! Gets hungry enough, and it’ll gladly take you as its dinner!” Logan accuses. “Get this animal away from here!”
“Logan! Don’t say that!” I playfully cover the wolf’s ears for a second. “That was mean! He’s a sweet baby.”
“It’s a monster, Allie! Not a pet!”
“If he’s a monster, why is he friend-shaped?” I smile, running my hand through his soft, white fur. The puppy licks my face and then looks at Logan. “See?” I say.
The white wolf approaches Logan, his tail swinging happily from side to side but he stops in his tracks suddenly because out of nowhere Logan lets go of the door handle and grabs a gun that was in the front of his pants and points it straight at the wolf’s head.
At that, I jump to my feet. “Logan! Where did you get this gun?”
He doesn’t answer me. He keeps looking at the wolf next to me with crazy eyes.
Yet, even though Logan’s pointing the gun straight at the wolf’s head, the wolf tries to get closer to him with its tail wagging and whimpering. Poor baby, he doesn’t understand that he’s in danger!
With a quick flick of the wrist, Logan takes the safety off the gun, and my eyes go wide. “No!” I position myself in front of the white wolf.
“You’re so fucking clueless! Get out of the way, Allie! Don’t be stupid!” I don’t move, but the white wolf, who was whimpering just now, lets out a growl aimed at Logan behind me. “See? That’s not a wolf, that’s a fucking monster,” Logan snaps. “I’m going to kill that beast.”
