Chapter 54

**_Alpha Ethan_**

Anger and disgust roil in my stomach as I wait for her to answer me.

Her eyes go wide, her mouth dropping open in a stunned, perfect ‘O’ as the shock registers on her face. A flicker of panic crosses her expression, and the very next second, she lunges for her phone, her hand reaching up fast and desperate. Her fingers brush against my arm, but I’m quicker. I lift it high, well out of her reach, watching her stretch to grab it, fingers just inches away, trying to snatch it back.

“I saw who you were going to transfer your fucking money to,” I accuse.

“That’s none of your business, Ethan!” she snaps as she continues to reach up with more desperation, leaning over the console. Her arm stretches across the car, and her fingers strain, almost clawing at my arm as she tries to snatch the phone from my hand. Her face is inches from mine, and I can feel the heat of her frustration as her fingers swipe just shy of the screen. I hold it closer to the window, out of her reach.

“Stop!” I tell her, and for the first time, she obeys me, stopping abruptly. “Why would you do that? Look at that house. He clearly doesn’t need your help.”

Alicent glances down, shifting her gaze to the side, and it doesn’t take a genius to see that she’s embarrassed. Her cheeks flush a little, and she nervously tucks a stray strand of her light blonde hair behind her ear. “He isn’t working, Ethan. Okay?” she says. “Is that what you wanted to hear?”

“No. It’s not. How long has he been unemployed? Or rather.” I pause, trying to control my temper as ire courses through my blood. “How long have you been giving him your money?”

She doesn’t say anything in response. The silence in the car after my question is deafening.

Alicent pulls her arms around herself, hunching her shoulders in an attempt to shield herself from something.

Oh, Goddess. Please. No.

I overheard their conversation, but I thought my ears were deceiving me. With all the noise, it was hard to hear them clearly. Especially with her ex-husband’s female desperately offering herself to me.

“Alicent.” I call her name, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath for a second. “Tell me you weren’t giving him money when you were living in that dump.” I can’t believe I’m asking her this. My voice is almost begging her to deny it. “Please, Little Dove.”

She’s looking down at her lap, but somehow, I can tell she’s almost crying, and it’s not from her aura. “You don’t get it.”

“Oh, fuck!” I yell, mindlessly throwing her phone into the backseat. I clench my teeth so hard that I almost break my jaw.

I’m so fucking angry with all of this, but the worst part is that it is killing me to hear her voice so weak like this. It just breaks my heart.

“He’ll go away if I give him money...”

“You won’t give him a fucking cent!” I yell.

Little Dove turns her head my way. She has tears filled in her meadow green eyes, running down on her cheeks. Her chin trembles when she says, “But he needs help.”

“He can take care of himself!”

‘If we rip out his throat, he’ll stop being a problem for her,’ Kral suggests to me.

“I don’t want him to starve. I know how it sounds, but it’s because—”

“Stop!” I interrupt sharply, my voice slicing through her excuses. Then I take her hands and hold them up in front of her eyes, close enough for her to really see them. “Look at your hands,” I say, my grip firm, unwavering. “They’re finally softening up, no longer calloused and cracked. They’re even starting to get some color,” I say. “How do you justify handing him money to keep him fed when you were the one starving, barely getting by? For Goddess’s sake, Alicent. Why would you do that?”

More tears well up in her eyes. “I... I.” She tries to answer me but starts crying instead.

So I speak. “When I went to get you out of that shitty place, you were just skin and bones, Alicent. How could you keep giving him money when you needed help?”

That enrages me so fucking much.

She yanks her hands, attempting to pull free as she twists them against my grip, and I instantly let go, the abrupt emptiness of my hold almost startling me. Her hands slip from mine, her expression tight with something I can’t quite read. “Ethan, you don’t understand. He’s the father of my child.”

“That doesn’t mean you have to suffer to do what he wants.”

I’m going to kill that fucker!

The hatred I felt when his slut of a wife said Alicent cleaned the floor of her house was enough before. But now? What the actual fuck?

“Promise me you won’t give him money anymore,” I say through my clenched teeth.

“I can’t do that,” she tells me, widening her eyes.

Narrowing my eyes at her, I ask her, “And why not? Is that fucker threatening you?”
