Chapter 18

Cyn’s POV

I couldn’t expect Alex to stay away from school forever. When I got to second period, there he was sitting at his desk. He smiled brightly at me, giving me chills, and not the good kind. I still can’t believe this is the same boy who was my best friend growing up. He stood up and went to me immediately, I looked around for Helena or Josh but neither were there yet. “I’ve thought about it and I’m going to give you a choice. You have until the end of the day to give me your decision.” He said with a smile. I continued staring blankly at him, the boy who took Tucker away from me.
“I’ll drop the charges, but in exchange, you have to break up with pretty boy. Easy enough, right? I figure if I can’t have you, nobody can. You have until the end of the day.” By the time he walked away I was shaking violently. “Are you okay?” Josh came up behind me and touched me on the shoulder. I shook my head before bolting out of the classroom.
I didn’t realize Josh followed me out until I stopped right by Tucker’s car. What do I do? Without thinking, I already knew what I was going to decide. I would do anything to get Tucker out of this situation.
“Hey calm down and talk to me.” Josh said, grabbing my shoulders to stop my pacing.
“I need to see him.” I said.
“See who?” He asked.
“Tucker. I have to go to the police station.” I muttered before getting into the car and starting it. I heard the passenger door open and Josh hopped in. “I’m coming with you.” He said. Without an argument, I took the car out of park and dashed out of the school parking lot.
“Do you want to tell me now what happened?” Josh asked after a few minutes of driving. I debated whether to tell him or not.
I sighed, “Alex pressed charges on Tucker for kicking his ass but this morning Alex told me he’ll drop them if I break up with Tucker.”
“So what are you going to do?” He asked.
“There’s only one option, I can’t let him get a charge on his record and spend jail time. We have to break up.” By the time I finished my sentence, I was crying. I had to pull over to the side of the road because I couldn’t see the road anymore. “Let it all out, Cyn. I’m here for you.” Josh rubbed my back and let me cry into his chest. “I’m sorry.” I sniffled.
“You have nothing to apologize for.” He said. After a few minutes, my tears finally dried enough for me to continue driving. I got back on the road and we soon arrived at the police station.
“Can I help you?” The woman at the counter asked.
“Yes, I’d like to visit Tucker Wilson.” I told her.
“Sign here. Only one visitor at a time.” She said while looking at Josh.
“Just her.” He pointed at me. The woman at the counter nodded before taking the paperwork I filled out and checking my ID. “Follow the guard and he’ll take you back to wait.”
I followed the guy she pointed out and he took me to a room that was divided by glass. There were phones on both sides of the glass to communicate with each other. After a few minutes, Tucker was escorted to his side. Tears welled up in my eyes when I saw him, hair disheveled and looking tired.
His eyes lit up when he saw me which just made me feel guilty.
He sat opposite me and picked up his phone. I held mine to my ear. “Hey, baby.” He said.
“Hi.” I greeted, unsure where to begin.
“I’m glad to see you, I’m not doing too bad in here so don’t worry, though the food sucks.” He laughed. I smiled through the tears at his good humor.
“Tucker, I spoke with Alex this morning.” I told him. He frowned immediately and I saw his knuckles turn white from squeezing the phone hard.
“What did the fucker say to you?” He asked through clenched teeth.
“He said he’ll drop the charges, but we can’t be together anymore.” I whispered. I saw Tucker look flabbergasted before a look of realization crossed his face. “No, Cyn, we don’t need him, we’ll figure out another way.” He pleaded.
“I’m sorry Tucker. This is the only way I can think of that will be better for you.” I hung up the phone and pressed my forehead against the glass for a moment before turning away and leaving.
Tears streamed down my face as I exited the room and went into the lobby. Josh wrapped an arm around my shoulders and walked me out to the car.
“Let me drive.” He said.
“What am I supposed to do now? I can’t continue staying at his grandma’s house and I can’t go back to the pack house. I’m royally fucked.” I told him as we got into the car.
“Stay with me.” He said, “my mother would love to have you.”
“I don’t know Josh, I feel like somehow that’d be betraying Tucker.” I told him.
“Look, we can be just friends, I won’t make any moves on you. Just stay with me. Let me do this for you, please?”
I looked into his eyes which seemed sincere.
“Okay, but only temporarily. I need to find a part time job and start saving money for a car and someplace to live.” I told him. He smiled at me before turning his attention back to the road.
“We need to go to his grandma’s house, turn left here.” I guided him the direction to her house.
When we arrived, I asked him to wait in the car. I walked in and was extremely nervous about seeing Tucker’s grandmother.
“Ma’am?” I said shakily as I approached her in the kitchen.
“What’s wrong sweetheart?” She asked.
“I need to move out, Tucker and I aren’t together anymore, but the good news is the charges are getting dropped.” I gave her a weak smile.
“Oh child, what did you do?” She asked.
I tried to hold back the tears but failed, I gave her the conversation I had with Alex and told her that I was going to stay at Josh’s.
“Is this boy going to behave himself?” She asked, concerned.
“I believe so. He’s been a good friend.” I told her. She looked unconvinced but gave me a hug. “I’m going to miss you. Think about it this way, this isn’t a forever breakup, you two can always get together in the future. I think you both really love each other and that things will work out.”
“I hope so grandma. Now, I need to pack up, and after I get things moved, I’ll bring back Tucker’s car.” I told her.
“Okay sweetheart, I’ll help you pack.” She said.
Before getting started, I pulled out my phone and sent Alex a text message.

Me: It’s done, now do your part.
Alex: don’t worry, I’ll take care of my end

I didn’t reply back and just hoped he’d keep up with his end of the bargain. I went upstairs to the room Tucker and I shared and packed up my things. This is the second time I’m moving in less than a week and it makes me feel like a drifter. I’m just thankful tomorrow is the weekend so I don’t have to deal with anyone from school.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a text from Helena.

Helena: girl where are u
Me: packing. It’s a long story, I’ll tell you after school today
Helena: you better. Be careful girl

I tucked my phone back into my pocket and continued gathering up all my stuff until I got everything situated. When I went downstairs I saw grandma on the front porch talking to Josh, she seemed to be scolding him and telling him to take care of me. I stifled a laugh and carried my luggage down the stairs.
“Is there anything else, Cyn?” He asked me.
“Yes, a few boxes, please grab them.” I pointed upstairs. I went to take the bags to the car and waited on Josh to arrive with the boxes. When we were loaded up Josh drove us to his house.
“Ma!” He called out entering the house.
“Guess she’s out.” He shrugged.
I carried my bags in and stood in the living room, unsure where to go.
“We don’t have any guest rooms so you’ll be staying in my room…hey don’t look at me like that, I’ll sleep on the floor.” He said while giving me a look. I was a bit relieved that we wouldn’t be sharing a bed though I felt bad about stealing it from him.
“Thank you for all this Josh.” I told him again.
“It’s my pleasure Cyn, really.” He said with a large grin.
We carried my stuff up to his room and I plopped down on the bed, inhaling Josh’s scent. It just felt, wrong. It wasn’t Tucker’s scent. I rolled over and stared out the window at the surrounding forest and closed my eyes, exhausted from today.
